I had never bothered with them, or used any until past 40, I tested a BMW GS with them on, the weather was quite good (about 14c) and there was "no need" for heated grips, but of course you have to play with the gadgets.
I was surprised to find I liked them even in the relatively mild conditions, found they got used a lot on my GS pretty much year round, handy if the weather changes whilst your out, or when setting off early on a summer morning, also means I rarely need to change gloves anymore - somehting that can be a pain if the weather is changeable, or on Mountain roads where it can be >30c at the bottom of a pass and <10c at the top.
