Some (more) pics with the Altrider crash bars would also be appreciated. Looking mostly at the engine mounting. Thanks!
I'll get some tonight if no one beats me to it.

I wonder, would a pair of threaded studs work well up front. Thread on nuts and washers for the bars, maybe in such a way as to be the spacer, slide on the plate and washers and cap nuts for that. Don't have to worry about over working the threads in the head, and the crash bar will always stay aligned even when the bike takes a hard nap. Hmm, the studs would also act as an extra pair of hands when hanging the pan back on.
I like this idea. I'm gonna see what I can scrounge up.

I made an offer on one yesterday and it was accepted today...I'm hardly ever in the right place at the right time. I probably used my luck up for the month. I was going to build one but time is hard to come by. I got scared when I flipped a rock up from the front tire last weekend.

I found some M12x1.25 x50mm studs at Ace hardware yesterday. I took out the engine bracket bolts and blue loctited the studs to to same depth as the bolts. I got a fender washer and lock washer and nut. I'm letting the loctite dry till tonite. The manual calls for 54 pounds of torque for the bolts would the torque be the same for a nut? The plate can be drop with bike on the center stand to change the oil once you get the spacers installed on the center stand. I put bike on center stand remove the 2 nuts up top on the engine then remove 2 nuts on the bolts that go through center stand and pull back bolts enough that the plate drops then lift off front. It should be easy peasy.

A few shots of my front mounting w/ the AltRider bars.

With AltRiders already installed, just remove the two front bolts and mount up per instructions (spacers on top of AltRider bars).

I had to take a little bit of care to keep the plate from digging into the bars when tightened down. Basically it just needs to mount as low as it can...get the front bolts right and then do the center-stand bolts.

I'll probably order some 50mm (40mm is supplied) bolts and add a washer. The AltRider mounting tab is 5mm thick. As mentioned before, bolts are M12 x 1.25 (fine thread).

Hope that helps.

I'd be interested in others' answers to this.

When I first got the plate I discussed options with a coworker of mine (he's a mech engineer) and the conversation steered me away from stainless due to it generally being lower strength. I figured matching the strength of the supplied bolts was ideal, but there is the oxidation problem...

As for the length...I like the idea of adding a washer between the bolt head and the plate, and I think there's room for the extra few 2-3mm on a 50mm bolt in there...if I recall, my AltRider bolts were not 5mm longer than stock.

Hooray for overthinking! ::013::

Stainless isn't going to be as strong as other types of steel due ot it's low carbon content it can't be hardened as much as say a grade 8. however this isn't a sheer point on the bike as a swing-arm or frame suspension would be.

You can always go for a stronger bolt but i don't think it's needed for this application.

I did however just find this
http://bit.ly/1bHCj5T (grade 8 zinc)
and they are half the price. I might go with this simply because it's cheaper and has a 19mm hex head instead of the allen wrench.
I hate allen wrenches so much.

It is $320 plus $30 U.S. shipping, or offer. You may be able to get it for less. I think there were 3 available when I last looked.
I just picked one up. It said there was 1 available so I snapped it up. Immediately some more showed up as available (also at 320.00) but they were the black ones.
I've already commited to the purchase but had the black ones shown up when I was looking I might have bought one in black instead since I have the faster Raven model.

I have seen a photo the silver plate on a black bike on this thread and it looks pretty good. Anyone have a pic of a black ACD plate on a black S10?
