If my altrider plate hadn't performed so admirably, I'd be all over this. Pretty plate, but I got no reason to change.
I like this idea also. I have altrider crash bars and removing the bolts for a oil change is very time consuming. After some measurement I figure I would need 60mm studs. Then I could loctite the studs to the engine. Use one nut to secure the engine mount bracket and altrider crash bars. Then use a second nut to secure the ACD skid plate. This would move the skid plate forward a few mm which would provide additional clearance for the left exhaust pipe as it's pretty close now.Don in Lodi said:I wonder, would a pair of threaded studs work well up front. Thread on nuts and washers for the bars, maybe in such a way as to be the spacer, slide on the plate and washers and cap nuts for that. Don't have to worry about over working the threads in the head, and the crash bar will always stay aligned even when the bike takes a hard nap. Hmm, the studs would also act as an extra pair of hands when hanging the pan back on.
Agreed. I just ordered the same thing you did from Home Depot. I sure hope the shank is threaded all the way. I have a premonition that we will get a partially threaded shank based on looking at a lot of M12-1.25 bolts on the internet. We'll see...True Grip said:I found some on Home Depots web site and are having them shipped to me.
m12x1.25x75mm Tap bolt. They are zinc coated and 8.8 strength. Easy enough to cut the head off.
60s may be cutting in close on length I found some 50s at Ace and tried one was able to only get one nut on so basically no spacer. That will not work. They are not to easy to find. Love the plate but will like it better to not have to remove bolts just 4 nuts to remove plate for oil change. Don had a good idea just hanging the plate on the studs is like an extra set of hands.
I checked this out. Only plain steel is available in M12-1.25 thread. I expect it would get rusty pretty quickly. Probably meant for indoor machinery.oilfield_trash said:

I got the 60mm bolts from a hardware store in Oxford, PA. They had the longest threads I have seen.True Grip said:I'll let you know. So far I've only found 50mm of threads. Where did you get 60mm bolts from?
Not sure I understand. I'm trying to avoid using bolts so I won't have to disassemble skid plate, crash bars, and engine mount every time I change oil. I was going to cut the head off of the bolts and use them as studs.sierraoffroad said:I think the idea of using metric threaded rod might be a good idea, but I'd use high temp anti seize if I couldn't find the proper bolts.
Ah. Understood. I'm trying to solve a problem when the ACD skid plate is used with AltRider crash bars. If you have this combination you will see what I'm talking about. Enjoy the skid plate. It's a thing of beauty - both form and function...sierraoffroad said:i really shouldn't comment here until I actually receive the skidplate. i ordered mine last thursday and haven't heard anything since.
