Suffice to say, there is a BMW in the garage that has had more repairs than the purchase price of the bike. (it's a 2011 w/74k on it), It's not a lemon, it's just a BMW.
My personal experience with BMW is a negative one, on almost every level.
Not a zinger. The problems we experienced on the bike are common to that bike. Nothing stands out as unusual. Transmission, stator, water pump, radiator overflow bottle, (never addressed by BMW, as they call it a "cosmetic" issue), and due to another water pump failure, engine meltdown, which was blamed on a known issue, the radiator cap, that had a puma letter, except that they never notified customers of it. These are all common failure points on many of the BMW products. Note that I didn't even mention the FD issues of the shaft drive bikes that, while much, much better since '08, still hasn't be really fixed and the same type of failures still are occurring, somewhat randomly, just as they have before. When one of the wheel bearings failed at 50k, the BMW dealer told me, with a shocked look, that they usually fail by 20k and he was amazed that we got 50k from them. If you think 20-50k for wheel bearings is normal, you haven't owned a japanese bike. 100k+ is normal there. I did have a failure at 150k on my FJR, but its hard to bitch about getting 150k out of anything, even a wheel bearing.Big Blu said:Ya had to get that last zinger in, jeeeez. ::007::

I'm not happy for him. I feel sorry for him when he realizes the mistake. But it's not like the info isn't out there.Big Blu said:Not how I would choose to celebrate the ops purchase EricV but hey, ya gotta do what ya gotta do. ::007::

Not the ES, but with the headlight recall, Yamaha said the bike must not be ridden.Dallara said:Well, have you seen any recalls on them, or the new Super Tenere ES, that say the bikes "must not be ridden" ??? ::025::

Horsesh*t back to you!Dallara said:Horsesh*t! ::005::
I've got the recall letter right here in my hands and it says:
"You should not ride your motorcycle until this modification is performed"
There's a few light-years difference between "should not" and "must not" ride your motorcycle. And there is also a world of difference between one of two headlamps blinking out and a rear suspension "plunger rod assembly" failing. One gives you a bit less illumination... The other causes you to crash. ::025::

Should -- used to indicate obligation, duty, or correctness
Obligation -- an act or course of action to which a person is morally or legally bound; a duty or commitment.
So based on the English language, it would seem "should" and "must" are virtually synonymous.
If I were you, I'd stick with it. They'll fix the problem and you'll get your RT. There's a reason you posted "I may be crazy, but..." You'll be trading off some annoying inconveniences for new life experiences. Life's too short on both counts.kenbike said:The dealer called and told me they have a hold on the RT! Thanks for the notice from a few of you guys...
So I thinking what to do with the deal and will sleep on it tonight.
Had plans to get the new bike Friday and have a great weekend but a failure in the rear shock ESA system has killed my plans...
What he said. You will LOVE the boxer motor.Curt said:If I were you, I'd stick with it. They'll fix the problem and you'll get your RT. There's a reason you posted "I may be crazy, but..." You'll be trading off some annoying inconveniences for new life experiences. Life's too short on both counts.
I've been around the car business for over 15 years and have never seen a warning like this on a safety recall issue. Especially the part about: "Please use every means of communication possible (telephone, email etc.) to ensure affected customers are informed as quickly as possible."justbob said:I just saw this on another forum that I frequent:
Effective Immediately
There is a Stop Ride and Stop Sale in effect for all R 1200 RT (K52) motorcycles with Dynamic ESA (options 191 or 233).
All customers who own or ride the above motorcycle must also be informed immediately!
Please use every means of communication possible (telephone, email etc.) to ensure affected customers are informed as quickly as possible.
At this time, BMW cannot guarantee that the plunger rod assembly for the rear suspension unit will not fail.
BMW Motorrad is currently working on a solution as a matter of urgency.
