I have been thinking of the Rt and decided in 2012 to buy the Tenere instead. It is a good all around bike but still felt I wanted a better road bike. The 2014 RT is a new bike and all of the reviews have been great. So sat took a hour test ride and decide to make the switch.
The Tenere is fun but the RT is great on all of the types of road surfaces I ride in my area.
Have always been concerned about BMW repairs but it has a 3 year warranty and when it is over may just move on. Will post a ride report after I get some miles on the new bike.
Happy Riding!

The RT is a nice bike. I keep looking at them, but always seem to get something else. Good Luck with it.

I love the new RT but because I have owned a bunch of BMW,s I am staying away. No matter how nice the bike is the lack of dealers sometimes out west the nearest is 2 states away and the inherit service cost of that service is just nuts. My last BMW twin cost me over $500 @ the 600 mile service. This is hard to accept, buy a new $20,000 motorcycle, ride it 600 miles and then back to the shop. Then ride 5-6K and repeat I just can't afford them anymore.

Congrats on the new ride. I've got through numerous BMW's (6 GS's, LT & 2 RT's) and ultimately decided Im no longer willing to deal with BMWNA. Always liked their bikes but the foul taste in my mouth is still there....4yrs later.

Terrific! The RT has always been a model that peaks my interest but doesn't seem to want to follow me home. Not since 1996 anyway.
BMW does technology right and in a way that enhance the riding experience and the safety of the rider..... even has self cancelling turn signals and a proper gear indicator. Add adaptive suspension, shift assist, TPM, factory GPS, audio, blue tooth, sirius, and your ready to ride the world in safety and comfort.

Last week when I scheduled an appointment at my local dealer for my R12R he suggest I take their demo RT home with me on Saturday and bring it back on Wednesday when I pick up my R12R. I'm going to have some fun for sure!!

Ken, have fun with your new ride, ride far, be safe, and report back...

Congratulations on your new RT! I don't think you're crazy at all. My other bike is the '13 K16GTL. Mine has been trouble free. I've got 8K miles on it thus far, and have not needed to take it back to the dealer for anything. I've done the 600 mile, 6000 mile, and yearly service myself, and had a tire change done by local independant. Invest in a good set of torx drive tools and a service manual and I don't think you'll find anything mysterious or overwhelming about maintaining your RT yourself. I'm waiting on the new version of the GS911 for computer diagnostics and service interval resets. I believe the new version will be required for your bike as well. I hear the new water cooled engine is awesome! Enjoy. ::003::

Enjoy your new ride! In 2011, my wife and I did the trip of a lifetime, an Edelweiss tour through the Alps, and that was the model of BMW I rode. It was superbly comfortable, smooth and fast. It had no problem handling either the Autobahn or Alpine switchbacks. Keep us posted.

Cheers,

Congrats on the new ride. I'm moving in the other direction. I'm trying to sell my 2012 RT so I can buy a Super Tenere.

Congrats on the new ride. I have had BMWs in my past, and have no regrets. They are great bikes. That said, love my Yamaha! ::022::

Never owned a RT, but have rented them three or four times and ridden them thousands of enjoyable miles. They're VERY nice bikes and extremely comfortable, although they seem to just get more bulky and less sporty with each iteration. If I were to get such a bike today, I'm be sorely tempted by the K16GT which doesn't seem that much bigger to me. I'd have to ride it and the RT to decide. When I owned a FJR, I used to trade back and forth with a 12RT rider and while my bike had more motor, the RT was a better handler and had a lot more cornering clearance.

I wish BMW would once again build a true sport-touring twin in the mold of the R1100RS and R1100S. Right now the gap between the F800GT and the R1200RT is a chasm. This used to be what BMW was really good at and now they have nothing.

Enough rambling. Enjoy your new bike.

I've ridden with a number of RT riders. The RT community is great (http://bmwst.com/) I would love to have one of the new R1200RT's, but for me an Adventure Tourer is just a better fit right now. I just like the drop-ability and ability to drive across a rocky field, streambed and the general ability the longer travel suspension gives me.

I was recently in an accident on my Tenere and debating whether or not to get a different bike myself(if I don't buy my bike back as salvage or get it repaired). The leading contenders are:

KTM 1190 Adventure R

Yamaha Super Tenere

Aprilia Caponord

Kinda covers the continuum... If the Caponord had a driveshaft it'd be a no brainer for me. I think the Yamaha is the best 'compromise' bike - which is to say it is the best overall package, but it is NOT the sexiest...

Ride what you love...love what you ride.

Hope you stick around and give us a report of the new bike!

After 25 years I found it is very difficult to deal with bmwna and their dealers ; get ready for constant recalls and attitude plus high maintenance costs and initial cost good luck.

 You're sadly mistaken. Get thee to a dealer asap. I'm not joking, or trying to be funny. You have outstanding puma letters on your bike. Secret ones and public ones. Radiator cap, water pump, and probably one more that I'll just let lie. They will tell you there is no radiator cap puma letter. But mark your cap, it won't be the one on there when you pick the bike up.

BMW makes feature rich, wonderful bikes to ride. But they have forgotten that scheduled maintenance should be a lot farther apart and a lot cheaper.
