Would you have bought your Tenere if it was the same price as a BMW 1200GS?

Probably. But....I have many, many good miles and better memories on BMWs. A ton of those on the GS11 and many more on an 1150 (none on the 12). To me, that is what a bike does - creates memories. I like BMWs but have been out of the market for one for over 10 years. Still own an 1100 RS with absolutely zero issues in 16 years so my reference base is rooted in good memories.

That being said, once I ride my S10 as much those memories will no doubt be as good. I guess the only moral to my story is buy what you like but either way - get out and ride the wheels off of it.

Yes, I would still have chosen the S10. I have had a great experience with brand Y in terms of performance and reliability over the years. The clincher is that I have a reliable, fair and highly competent dealer and service center for Yamaha. Irony is he used to sell BMW but no more, not sure why.

I've never owned a BMW bike because dealers are few and far between.

When I started shopping I was looking at moving from a 650 Dakar to an F800. The Dakar was great and easy to work on, but I needed to work on it more than I wanted. The new and lightly used F8's I was looking at were close to the price of the S10. So for the price of an F8 I could get the S10, and even though they are different machines, for my purposes, they would both work. The plus is that the S10 is way better than the F8 and if history plays out, more reliable.

Had an 02 GSA and an 07 GSA. Great bikes. Too many issues with both.
Would not buy another so, as noted by others, the price was not the issue.
The Yamaha ST is the bike I've been waiting for Japan to build for the last 15 years.

...and they done good!! ::012::

Yamaha Honda Kawasaki Suzuki Victory & Can Am I also have the choice of all of those to ride for free except the pre order bikes like the super ten

I paid my 500 bucs along with everybody else last sept and wrote my check when it arrived i still look at all the bikes i could be riding for free when i walk past them to my Super Tenere and despite small gripes about the S10 (personal things) I still don't regret my choice ::022::

Great question. I ordered the ST and decided to cancel the order to wait for the 2nd. year and see how the bike holds up. In the mean time I purchased a 2011 GS1200 that I was able to find with no options so the purchase price (with bags) was less than the Yamaha. The GS with the new engine is one helluva bike and I have a good dealer near-by but I can honestly say the reason for purchasing the BMW was the price ... if I had to pay $22K out the door for a GS with all the options that the ST comes with standard I would have gone another year on my KTM.
From what I've read about the Super Tenere I think Yamaha has done a remarkable job and later this year or next spring I will be placing an order for the 2013 bike. I have always been a huge fan of Yamaha motorcycles because of their design philosophy which is to produce new and innovative motorcycles with rugged reliability and high performance. Dollar for dollar the GS vs. the ST would be a no brainer, Yamaha ST Blue would be my choice.
I congratulate anyone that had the faith (and patience) to place an order and wait for a year for the ST... can't wait to see one of you guys out on the road.
ENJOY YOUR RIDE!

Before I rode the ST; probably not. I might have gotten the GSA,.

After riding the ST for a few months now, yes, it will still be the ST. For the ease of handling, and smooth power band.

No BMW for me at any price !! My buddy's 06 RT is such a POS !! Parts are heartfailure expensive and if I wanted a Volkswagon engine I'd just buy a old bug.. I have never been happier with a purchase then I'am with my ST.. Awesome ride !!

Friends have GS's...no thanks...to many issues, uncooperative dealers, expensive parts, warranty hassles. No thanks.

I would not have a GS even if it was cheaper than the ST.
I am STRONGLY in this camp. Too many hassles, not even interested at any price. I am happy that I get to ride with friends on them tho, that is a good thing.

I wanted a shaft driven adventure bike that wasn't BMW. So that would be a yes. The fact that it was a Yamaha was a BIG plus. Lower cost (bike and parts) is nice too.

That said, it does appear that BMW can build a nice bike and can't wait to see the details on their 1250GS, but their quaility control appears to be hit or miss. Maybe you get a good one, maybe you won't. Just too many bad stories on advrider.

I was a phone call away from buying a 2010 GS last spring after the news of the S10 delay. I couldn't pull the trigger based on all the maitenance costs and reliability issues. To answer your questio , regardless of cost I would go with the S10.

I'm fairly satisfied with my ST, but I would not have paid BMW prices for one.
I would definitely not pay BMW prices for a BMW - Hell, I wouldn't pay Super Tenere prices for a BMW!

If Super Tenere was BMW prices, it would have had me considering a Tiger more closely. I would have had to test ride the Tiger before deciding. As it is, I haven't ridden a Tiger so hard to say if it might have gotten the nod...

My impression is the Tiger might be a lot of fun, but the S10 is the bike for the long-haul. Which is what I'm after.

+1 my sentiments exactly

I owned the new Tiger for a month. It's a great street bike. The triple is tons of fun. Off road it felt "fragile". The S10 feels robust off road and touring the Tiger can't even come close. I do miss the music of the Hinckley triple!

That's why I am keeping my Tiger 1050. The triple motor, in that chassis, for street riding is magic!
