Would you have bought your Tenere if it was the same price as a BMW 1200GS?

This is the most honest non bashing statement I can say. In the last ten years Ive almost bought a GSA twice. (I ended up not buying because of customer service issues with both BMW dealers) Ive read about them for years. I know people with them. I have ridden them. I worked and built parts for them (BMW GS/A)..
With knowing all this, and now reading / understanding / riding the Super Tenere, I enjoy the Yamaha better. There are small + and - to both. But for me, and what I do my vote is 100% Yamaha Super Tenere... Even if the prices where the exact same...

Is there a hidden suggestion that had the bikes been the same price, and I was willing to spend that much, would I have bought the BMW instead?

No

Would I have paid that much for the Tenere regardless of the availability of the BMW?

Probably.

What he said..

Where I live and for what I want to do, it's GSA (minus a few bits because I think they are a wank), Vs S10.

The GS is too street and not that tough, The GS/A is tougher but against the S10 it's even piggier and I'm starting to think the S10 is even tougher.

Things I like about the GSA that I wish was on the S10? 30Litres of fuel comes in real handy here. Nicer paint in places.

Things I like about the S10 that I wish the GS-A had. A few things that are not visible in the showroom.

And at 40% more expensive (feature for feature) where I live it's a no brainer.

Against the GS? Well like I said, it's not the same thing really. (the standard one I assume you are talking about).

But shouldn't you be asking yourself if the bike suits YOU for the money? I mean it's your money.

I am begining to think there is a bit of ASTRO turfing going on today ::024::

Cheers
Graham

I'll go against the grain here and say that I probably would have gotten a GS or GSA if it had been the same price as the S10. But they're not the same price, not even close.

Friends have GS's...no thanks...to many issues, uncooperative dealers, expensive parts, warranty hassles. No thanks.

I would not have a GS even if it was cheaper than the ST.

i have an 02 1150GSA. having never ridden a 1200GSA i can't really compare the two. i understand the 1200GS is a helluva machine, though. my issue with buying another bmw is not because of bad experiences with my 02, but because bmw's reputation is wavering because of their inability to adequately address the final drive issues. i vowed to not buy another bmw until the issue is addressed. i hope they get it sorted soon.

so i'd buy the tenere over the gs/gsa even if they were priced the same. the tenere is shaping up into one sweet machine.

No, I would have a Tiger 800XC. Wouldn't even consider a GS or GSA. If the Tenere wasn't so well equipped I would have the Tiger now.

I was actually thinking of a 800GS until my wife's 650GS (detuned 800) had problems and it was only a year old. Needed a fuel pump and injectors. BMW was a royal pain to deal with. Seems there are issues with BMW and ethanol. My local dealer says that he has had a lot of 650's and 800's as well as 1200 gs's with the same type of issues.

I also like to do some of my own maintenance and you can't even reset the service light on the bmw without going to the dealer.

I rode the 1200GS in Europe and it was a nice bike but it just didn't do anything for me. Plus over half of the GS's in the tour had some sort of problem and they all had jsut a few thousand miles.

I know quite a few people who swear by BMW. They are just not for me.

I rode everything except the Triumph. The Yamaha suits me the best.

The price tags on the two bikes had no bearing on my decision. I’ve had a lot of luck with Yamahas over the years and I have a long history with my local dealer. I’ve had one experience with BMW (albeit a G450X) and that didn’t go well in terms of both the motorcycle or the dealer…and, while I do a lot of my own wrenching, a local dealer who is there for me when I need them is important. The Super Tenere is working out real well for my needs and I’m having a lot of fun with it…just like all my prior experiences with Yamahas.

If the S10 cost as much as a GS I wouldn't buy either one of them.

If the GS cost as little as an S10 I would have still bought the S10.

I've ridden a number of GS's and will continue to rent them on trips, simply because they are like McDonalds. You always know what you'll get.

But I've passed on buying them for a long time. Don't like the motor and just never drank the blue cool-aid.

Simple answer for me is yes. I have ridden GS's on tours and thoroughly enjoyed them. But both local dealers have had customer service issues and I too know several folks who had major mechanical failures. The local Yamaha dealers aren't saints either but I believe the Yamaha will be more reliable based on owning 5 others.
