I was just was on the coast about 30 miles north of the broken nuke & will have to upload some photos. Biggest construction area that I have ever seen and it's now two years after.

Very humbling to see an entire neighborhood of house foundation bases that are only 6" tall and all the rebar sticking up and twisted like wet noodles, facing inland.
It's both humbling and amazing to ride through areas devastated by the tsunami; humbling when I look at how the waves totally leveled all of the houses in areas I used to ride through; however, I'm amazed at how well most of the affected places in the northern part of Tohoku region have been restored and how the people just soldier on without missing a beat. I rode to Fukushima City in Fukushima prefecture earlier this year, but was crunched for time and made no attempt to see the area near the reactors.

I blame it all on a supposed 'smart' phone and fat fingers. 8) Spell check says all of us are wrong including this uber-correct spelling complete with meaning: 福島 O0

At the American International Motorcycle Expo in Orlando a few weeks ago I picked up a Micro Start Battery kit from antigravity batteries as shown here http://antigravitybatteries.com/microstart/. This thing is amazing. It will fit in your shirt pocket but puts out 200 amps and it can jump start my TRUCK about 5 times on a single charge. ??? My little old S10 motor would be no challenge. It also comes with USP adapters to allow you to charge cell phones and other USB type gear. I carry it in the bottom of my side case for emergencies, both for my self and others. The whole kit with charger and cables fits in a box about 4" by 5" by 1.5" and weighs 14 oz. The kit was around $125. Having had several batteries die on me, I feel this is cheap insurance.
I haven't put a Lithium battery in my S10 yet but after my experience with the Shorai in my DR-650, there is no question that one is going in the S10 when a new battery is needed.
That Micro Start looks like the hot setup. I keep a gell-cell jump unit in my car and was think about building my own lithium backup unit for the bike, but the Micro Start looks like the real deal and the price is right. I notice that they now have another Micro Start unit (XP-1) that is about one inch longer and adds a 12VDC outlet, a 19VDC laptop charging outlet a grunch of adaptors to fit various laptop computers, along with a zipped case to contain it all.

Until about 1100 miles ago, my S10 still had the original battery. It worked fine, but in attempting to diagnose a running issue, Yamaha had the dealer replace it under YES. The new battery starts the bike no differently and with no more apparent energy than the original. Bike is at 107,000 miles as of this morning's commute.

Best,

Chris

I have a Shorai in my 07 Yamaha WR250f that was given to me to test when they first came out about 5 or so years ago by FAR GNCC team. At first I thought it was a joke as it weighed next to nothing. It has cranked my yamadog many times in all kinds of weather conditions. I shorted out the neutral safety wire so I could use it to do in gear dead engine starts by pressing the magic button and kicking at the same time. I only killed it one time and that was because I sucked water in a river crossing and was to tired to kick. Eventually a spectator kicked it to life and the battery recovered shortly after running the bike.

Bottom line is I will be replacing my stock S-10 battery with a Shorai when the time comes..........or sooner if Fred hooks me up ::001::

This thread has done a 180 on me.

Early on it revealed why I would NOT change to this battery. A battery is just something I don't want to NEED to know anything about.
Adding a "process" in cold weather turned me completely off.

But now I find out that this technology actually holds its charge better over time?

Ok, that changes things.

So I got to thinking, with lead acid and camping, I'm reluctant to charge cell phones or tablets overnight with the motorcycle battery. God forbid I'm in a tent in some remote location. But, are you saying it would actually be a good thing to charge a phone on a cold night? It would HELP the battery do it's primary job of starting the bike!

Is this flawed thinking?

By the way, I have forgotten I left the cell phone on charge overnight and the lead acid oem battery was fine. But, it wasn't that cold.
Snake I think you need one of these to throw in your panniers.

Hope the Shorai is a good investment - I just ordered after the old girl almost didn't have enough to fire off this morning.

The good news is between the battery and Akra exhaust my Tenere will have lost 9.5 pounds since I bought her. Couple that with the 24 pounds I lost last year; The Old Girl and me are going into '14 light as a feather...

;)

You just made me realize that a lot of our original delivery bikes are turning 3 this summer and a lot of us will be in this position.

Mine only lasted two years - but north Florida is hell on batteries - I'll bet we've sold more at my dealership in the past two weeks than I did in the previous six-eight weeks.

80 degrees one day, 40 the next, and they start dropping like flies....

I was checking around and pricing the Shorai, and noticed that every website I checked gave me a different part number battery for this specific bike. The Shorai website shows a different part number than Motorcycle-Superstore, which shows a different part number than Jaxon's site, and so on... Makes we wonder which part# is the best size / fit???

Jaxon has been running his for awhile with no issue. Give him a call and he can explain any questions you have. On the other hand I would call Shorai and just ask them, maybe they just listed it wrong.

Went back and checked Jaxon's site. Thought I remembered his site showing a part number, but it doesn't. Like you said, I'll just call him when I'm ready to buy one. Could be that he has the same one the Shorai site lists for our bike, which is the LFX18A1-BS12.

Yep, been running one now for about 7-8 months... no issues... This morning when I fired up the motor it was about 29-30*... no hesitation, fired right up.... Its funny sometimes, I have one set of driving lights that are hooked up to constant, I don't need the key. I have left them on accidently before. Even after having them on for an hour + the bike fires right up like normal... pretty amazing. Ive used these same driving lights to set up camp before with out the ignition turned on, with no fear of draining the battery.... I've been really pleased with the performance..

Just remember that li-ion discharge "curve" is essentially flat, so plan for it. That means that they will deliver - until they don't. There won't be much notice like slowing of a starter motor, they will just suddenly be discharged.

When they are discharged, don't keep cranking and expect them to give you a "little more." If you keep putting a draw on a li battery you can over discharge it, which means it won't function any more. (Actually they may give a very brief burst after a couple hours, as li has a rebound characteristic. It won't be much though.)

Well, dammit, if I'd known Jaxon sold them I would've gone there - my bad for not checking.

I ordered straight from Shorai and they list two for the Tenere:

Standard Recommendation - Part # LFX18A1-BS12

Duration Recommendatiom - Part # LFX19A4-BS12

I went with the Duration as it was only $10.00 more - and provides 15 more CCA...

Should be here next Tuesday, so I hope it fits...

I don't have one in the ST yet (the OEM is still going strong), but I have one in my KTM 530 that is still going strong after 4 years. The battery in my KTM takes a beating since I mainly do single-track in the Mojave desert and in the Colorado Rockies. I could not get a lead-acid battery (2 different Yuasa's including the high-end YTZ series, Scorpion and one other) to last more than 6 months (some as little a 2 months) before switching to the Shorai.

If it's really cold like this past October In the Rockies (10F) I just turn on the headlight for about a minute before-hand and she starts right up. If I forget, she turns over a bit slower but starts after about 15 seconds.

I have read and heard about some QA/QC problems that Shorai has had in the past, but I have a good one.

If you get a chance to take pics when you do the install, would love to see how the Shorai fits.
