Re: UK Super Tenere Console/trip reset failure

Got this from Yam Australia..

Dear Mark,

We note your unit is outside the warranty period. On occasion we do assist loyal Yamaha owners with goodwill assist based on merits of the claim.
You need to have a Yamaha dealer investigate the fault and contact myself with the findings.
Based on dealer feedback, service history and unit condition, we can assess the level of assistance (if any).
Please contact your local Yamaha dealer to arrange an inspection and advise them of your intention for assistance.

So have arranged to take it to a dealer tomorrow to confirm panel is dead.

I had to take mine in twice, once for dealer to confirm my fault and a second time for the dealer to video the inspection and send to YAM! Then they came up with that offer, which I haven't accepted.

Good news.. Ya,aha Australia have offered to have mine repaired.. but won't cover R&R to the bike. As an old auto electrician ... not a problem.

Going to drop it on the service manager's desk next Monday!

A great result.. so far.

Cheers

Re: UK Super Tenere Console/trip reset failure

I noticed yamaha are fitting the same clocks from the 2014 tenere on to the new " tracer" so at least they have appeared to have confidence in them , but it dosent do any favours for those having trouble with the old clocks . Yamaha should bite the bullet & replace them instead of going down the BMW route of " no we dont have a problem " ....

Unplug it and plug it in again and it will default to odometer only ( no trip and no clock adjustment but all else works)
Couldn't you disconnect and reconnect the battery at noon?

I wonder if Yamaha UK are listening ?
I very much doubt it. The battery on my V-strom 650 died after only 5 weeks and I tried to point it out to the dealer that it was a common fault (obviously a duff batch) and showed them the number of people with the same fault on the UK forum. They couldn't have been less interested, said it was all anecdotal and not evidence. I did get a new battery however.

Re: UK Super Tenere Console/trip reset failure

So the latest on my Super Tenere’s faulty speedo reset button....

Yamaha Australia offered to have it repaired for me at their expense. A good outcome as the bike is roughly 3 - 4 months out of warranty.

But.. I would have to pay for remove and refit!

No problems.. as an auto electrician in a past life.. 5 mins and speedo is removed.

So the dealer sent it to Lionel Otto Instruments here in Brisbane.. And I just knew that they would not be able to service it. Twice the dealer rang them to be told.. a couple more days. After a week and a half.. Lionel Otto’s rang and said they couldn’t fix it... they would send it back.

Well it didn’t arrive back because.. it was in Sydney. Obviously sub contracted to somebody else who couldn’t fix it. After being off the road for about 3 weeks.. I got it back.

For 27 years I worked and co owned MAX Instruments here in Brisbane.. we were the main service agents and distributors of VDO instruments. And with this experience I just knew that without some sort of service info this would not be a repair job that could be done easily.

When I turned the panel over and inspected the screws, they had never been out, not one of them. So I removed the back and did a visual inspection of the unit. No obvious dry solder joins or cracked circuit board to be seen. The switch itself functions OK.. So somewhere deep in its innards.. there is a problem.

Meanwhile, Yamaha Australia are flying in a new dash for me and I should have that late this week or early next week.

Would really love to know what goes wrong with them.. As who knows how long he new one will last?

Re: UK Super Tenere Console/trip reset failure

Hi Mark. Well....if its like mine I can answer that. My second one lasted about 13 months. Really p***** me off everytime I think about this. On a 13k bike I really think Yamaha should do something about this!

Re: UK Super Tenere Console/trip reset failure

Looks like my trip button has just given up the ghost too, all the symptoms as described here.
Bastard of a thing!!!!

Anyway as I'm out of warranty it's either
1. Replace (expensive),
2. Live with it (provided the power down gets me back to the main odo)
3. Any known bodges I could try?

Any thoughts?

Re: UK Super Tenere Console/trip reset failure

I've just fitted an extra speedo on mine to regain a trip and odometer. About £35 all in. There's a recent thread in accessories.

Yam UK offered me a new instrument console for £800 and then dropped it to half price. I could'nt afford to fill there coffers.

Re: UK Super Tenere Console/trip reset failure

It's looking like option 2 then... I can manage without a trip. Everything else works and I'd rather not loose the main odo.
If the whole thing fuggs up later I'll look at replacement. Does that happen or is it a one item glitch?

Are we talking about Gen 1 bikes only for this issue?

Re: UK Super Tenere Console/trip reset failure

Has anyone checked if it can be taken apart, my guess is either dodgy switch or crack on circuit board - possibly a cheap DIY fix.

May also be professional firms out there who could do this

Re: UK Super Tenere Console/trip reset failure

I think it was viewdvb that investigated the switch issue and found it to be IC related. Someone else also cracked the unit open to wire in a remote traction control switch. Soldering fresh switches in would have been a nice 50p solution.

Re: UK Super Tenere Console/trip reset failure

Sorry to hear yours has gone too Steve_h80. My view after my second one went was that even when Yamaha offered me one at half price ...whoopydoo!! I still wasn't prepared to spend £400 on something that will almost certainly go again. I bet it costs peanuts to make these consoles (check out the ones for other bikes on Alibaba for instance!!).
No way was I going to pay £800 OR £400.
Still really bugs me that Yamaha wont admit to this being a fault.

Re: UK Super Tenere Console/trip reset failure

Well I've unplugged the battery today, gave it time a coffee then reconnected.
Result, I've got my odo and trip I'll live without.
I'll need to do it again next weekend at 1:00 to get the clock right :)

At least when I meet gs guys I'll have something to boast about. ::015::
