Re: UK Super Tenere Console/trip reset failure

Thanks for this! I detached the battery on mine to get the odo back, but it didn't work. I perhaps didn't leave it off long enough. I'll try again.

If there is anyone who can take a High Res photo of the PCBA, perhaps there is a chance some experts can look at it and determine if the IC can be replaced.

Re: UK Super Tenere Console/trip reset failure

My left button failed recently - 2013 model Tenere with 12000 miles. Took it apart to see what I can find (I have a background in electronics). The "O" ring seal / gasket between the backing plate and the main housing looked to be a little twisted in one corner. The backing plate also had a tide mark in the same corner - possibly suggesting some water ingress. The whole assembly was dry when I looked at it but then it hasn't been ridden in the rain or washed for a couple of weeks. There appeared to be nothing mechanically wrong with the switch. Both of them felt the same and had the same positive click when pressing.
However, there was evidence of corrosion. Firstly in the form of a green powdery substance (probably cupric chloride), and secondly some of the tracks at the edges of the circuit board also looked pitted and corroded, even under the solder resist. I didn't have the time or inclination to de-solder and remove the LCD to get a better look at the board, but I'm fairly convinced that this corrosion is the cause of my problem - and even if it wasn't then something else would surely fail soon. Not very impressed. Still deciding what to do. I could test my theory by bypassing the PCB and running thin wires from the switch to whatever they're connected to, but that would require a lot more de-soldering / disassembly and I might make it worse. I also found a place that does instrument cluster repairs not too far from here so I might contact them and see what they say http://www.cartronix.co.uk/

I would be interested to know if anyone else has found a poorly fitted gasket or corrosion on the PCB? I may go after Yamaha with this.

I found some replacement clocks..................

the buttons seem much better than the Yamaha ones and the display is much clearer, on the down side they were very expensive, but the rest of the bike came with them FOC.

Rasher, you can make people go right off you, you know?
How's the new ride?

Won't hijack this thread, will post something when I have ridden it a bit more, maybe after my Alps trip next month.

Re: UK Super Tenere Console/trip reset failure

Hi dubbyadot. How did you get on?? I'm disgusted at how Yamaha have brushed me aside on this because it's obviously not just wear and tear. I am now encountering a bigger problem that you all need to be aware of. Without the left button one cannot do diagnostics on this bike. I've checked with Yamaha UK and the only way to do diagnostics is via the console. This is proving a real problem for me now since my bike is running bad and no-one seems to be able to figure it out!

I read that a S10 owner in Singapore send his speedo for repairs n got it fix. Never feedback where it went wrong. I suspect a IC component was changed. No...not a Yamaha service but more like a electronics repair shop. SGP180 was the cost.

I have a S10 2015 ZE model. The reset problem started at 10.000 Km. I live in Chile and have no idea to which version corresponde, but suspect is an European model since it has metric unit display.

Re: UK Super Tenere Console/trip reset failure

I have not taken apart a Super Tenere instrument cluster, but the thread below is from the FJRForum and I'd be shocked if how they make them is different.
http://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php/topic/165857-trip-meter-reset-button-doesnt-work/?hl=%2Breset+%2Bbutton

In short, the FJR guys found that the buttons are normal microswitches that can be fixed (at least for a while) with contact cleaner, after opening the instrument cluster. The switches are also common enough to have an electronics shop replace them.

Re: UK Super Tenere Console/trip reset failure

Thanks checkswrecks. Not that Im doubting your advice but I seem to remember (when I opened mine up) that it looked very different to that FJR one and the auto electrical place I went too reckoned it couldn't be fixed.
One thing I am curious of though is, could one plug in a console from for example an R1 and run diagnostics through that? I can buy a cheap R1 console from China but a cheap S10 one appears to be impossible

Re: UK Super Tenere Console/trip reset failure

Well my instrument cluster was replaced by Yamaha Australia around 20 months ago.. and all is still well.

However.. I don't trust the thing and so I NEVER use the trip reset button at all.

It is interesting that Yamaha Australia told me that they only had one other failure in the entire world!!!!!!
