I tried to reset my trip meter after filling the tank. Left button press - no change, no cycle through the trips to the odometer. It looks like a failed switch. Has anyone had experience of servicing/replacing these switches?

Try warming it before anything else, as cold can stiffen things up.

I've not had the problem on this bike and I have not taken the instrument cluster apart on this bike. I have seen a disassembled FJR cluster, which should be very similar. There's at least one thread where somebody else had taken the cluster apart even though it was not meant to be taken apart.

But if you do and as I remember the photos, the switch is just a rubber boot that covers a couple of copper pieces. Should be easy to clean or diagnose at that point.

That's a killer thread from the past. Explains how we can move all the functions to our bars. :)

Despite Yamaha's "never had that before" reaction to this failure I know of others. Only the left hand switch button. Officially, the cluster is a non-servicable item. but I am willing to have a look using this link. The problem is that I can hear the micro-switch clicking so it leads me to believe that it not necessarily a switch failure (though it could be dirt in the contacts). Still, it is worth a look as the replacement is way expensive.

Update: I dismantled the console and put a circuit tester across the switch connectors. The switch was working fine. This is an electronics fault. I go further and believe it is a design or quality control electronics fault - probably a badly specified chip in the console and is down to Yamaha.

UK Super Tenere Console/trip reset failure

Dear friends. My trip reset button has just failed for the second time. The first time it was replaced under warranty. Now that Im out of warranty Yamaha UK are asking me to pay for it even though A. their fix has only just lasted one year. B. i know of another 5 cases in the uk of the same failure C. I am pretty sure it will happen again.
SO...can I please ask anyone in the UK that has had the same problem to state it here. It will help me to hopefully help you all. I am trying to build a case to prove to Yamaha uk that it is a known problem. Also please remember that if you dont do many miles your bike may still have this problem later on so your support is appreciated. Thank you. For your info. This is a very expensive fix should it go wrong on your bike.

Re: UK Super Tenere Console/trip reset failure

What a luck!!

I just had the same problem 3 days ago, and was wondering if that's a specific case for my bike or a generic failure. The bike is brand new 2013 model and the odometer is at 11.000 KM only, I started the warranty procedure, but knowing that this will happen again and again is not a comforting news...

Also a question for your first fix, did they fix the button somehow, or changed the Heads up Display completely?

PS: I wish there was a way for implementing the 2014 dashboard... O:)

I also had the same problem 12 months ago, my bike was only just out of warranty and Yamaha would not replace them for free!

Yamaha need to address this problem now as it seems more and more are going faulty.

Stu sent you the emails this morning.

Mine went in January after 24000 miles.

I'm stuck on trip mileage and calculating my mileage to the next service. It wouldn't be so bad if it was the other way round. I suspect from what I've seen on the forum its not just a simple switch failure. I'm not in the mood to fork out £500 either!

Here here Ferrett! Why should we! My replacement clocks have only lasted one year and now its broken in exactly the same way. Faulty goods or 'not fit for purpose' is the way I see it. Im awaiting a response from Yamaha UK and will let you all know. Thanks Hudders. I'll look on that otherwebsite too.

Unplug it and plug it in again and it will default to odometer only ( no trip and no clock adjustment but all else works)

No, they don't fix the button; it is listed as a non-serviceable item. New console required. In any case, I opened mine up and circuit tested the switch which was OK. The problem is in the electronics. It may be coincidence but mine failed immediately after I disconnected and reconnected the battery. Voltage spike or something? Anyone else remember the circumstances of their failure? I checked out the 2014 console - sorry - no way.

The most irritating feature is the reaction from Yamaha UK "Oooh, we've never had that before!" Lying b****rds! This IS MOST CERTAINLY a known problem. When Honda had a similar known problem with CB750 alternators they replaced them FOC even after many years. Yamaha ought to be doing the same but don't hold your breath. I wonder what the legal position is with such "known" problems.
