Re: UK Super Tenere Console/trip reset failure

The connectors for a number of the models are the same, but the cluster is pin-specific. In other words, while you should be able to plug in a R1 cluster it will know it is on the wrong bike and won't work.

Thanks checkswrecks. Not that Im doubting your advice but I seem to remember (when I opened mine up) that it looked very different to that FJR one and the auto electrical place I went too reckoned it couldn't be fixed.
One thing I am curious of though is, could one plug in a console from for example an R1 and run diagnostics through that? I can buy a cheap R1 console from China but a cheap S10 one appears to be impossible

Yes, me too...but the "one button club" aint much fun when one needs to run diagnostics and can't. My bikes been running really bad for ages and no-one can figure it out. Even 2 Yamaha dealers have basically said there's no point them looking at it because with the left button working they can't run the diagnostics. Yamaha have p****d me off so much in not admitting this is a common fault that Im seriously thinking of going back to Honda for my next bike.

What is odd to me is that I see only non-North American bikes from all these reports, yet North America has the largest number.

I'm another with the dashboard failure. Started my 2012 XTZ12B last month (in my garage on a trickle charger) and everything worked fine. Started it last night and the console lights and clock were functioning when I turned the ignition on, but nothing else. After starting however, the entire display went blank. What is also odd is that the kickstand sensor isn't working and allowed the bike to go into gear while on its center stand. (Found this out by pure accident... scary) My bike only has 3900mi on it and has been maintained to perfection, but is well outside its warranty. The whole $600 OEM replacement cost is absolutely NUTS!

After a very severe dirt bike wreak 2yrs ago, I just want to get it repaired so I can sell it... Does anyone know of a company that sells refurbished units perhaps?

You're lucky its 'only' that much. It's £800 over here in rip-off UK.
I'm getting really peed off with all this now so I dont reckon I'll be buying another XT or Yamaha for that matter. Before buying the XT I'd done 300,000+ miles on 3 different Honda's with no big problems so I think its going to be back to Honda for me soon! Pity..I'll miss you all on here if I do change!

Any idea what shipping and taxes would be to the UK? I once bought some fittings from the US and got stung by customs.
Shipping costs are high, and import duty is 10% + VAT 20% so that is shipping + 30% + handling costs by Royal Mail to inform you that you owe them money. also the meter CW shown is 2014 MY, is your's 2012 or 2014?
One last point, the US version does not switch from mph to kph.
Maybe a US member would have you ship it to them (free shipping) and then send to to you without the outer package and mark as 'repair item, NCV' as long as you paid for time and shipping??

Actually they do. Pulled this switch over trick on a Tenere ridding buddy already that didn't know, freaked him out. Happened to me the first time by accident before I knew about it and freaked myself out. Filled up my tank riding home at night, resetting my tripmeter without my glasses on.

Bad idea as sometimes they can ask for proof of outgoing shipment. Could turn into a can of worms. Best to have sender declare as "gift" and state a low value. Downside is you wont be able to insure for a higher value so if package damaged or lost you'll be out money.

I've re-posted to family in Germany, which also has a stiff VAT, so it can be done. A personal transfer was not treated the same as when there and buying merchandise from a US vendor.

Just checked and the price of the Gen1 console is $617 new.

The US meters certainly can be switched from miles to km on the US Gen2 bikes. Don't remember if I could do it with my Gen1.

Maybe I'm getting confused about the Canadian version then?

Just for the heck of it, I switched mine over to km on the way home this evening. Easy peasy.

This is a scary thread as there is no known fix except for a replacement. From what I read mostly 2013 models n UK specs. Perhaps a bad batch of workmanship issues, bad components or just harsh UK humid weather that encourages corrosion.

The only documented fix is a case in Singapore but no one knows what was done. The possibility is that it can be fixed by unorthodox method. A post made earlier, I think on page 4 or 5 with pictures of broken copper traces on the pcba could be a root cause of the issues. Coupled with observations that the micro switch is intact, it leads me to believe that the problem lies in the connectivity between the switch to whatever it connects to.

Recently there is another case in Singapore with a left switch issue. In am trying to see if I can get more insights to how it gets fixed.

It could also be used by Brits as justification for spending more time in Spain and Italy
