Yup. Had the Jaxon skid plate, pannier ranks and bars all powder coated a metallic gun-metal gray. I never would have believed it (given their bashed up condition), but they turned out looking better than new. They look great! I've been meaning to post up some pics. Will get around to it eventually.

Guess I can stop sending you emails about the rally, huh? We have not talked about it much and thought you might still be considering it. I did the mini-rally this past Saturday. It was tons of fun and I learned a LOT from rally veterans. I took 3rd out of 10 riders (2 of which didn't finish). I guess not bad for the my first time out. I made a couple stupid mistakes when I built my route. Oh well, that's why I did this "pre-season" rally.
Get that route building under control so we can go back and ride the full BDR and NOT get dead-ended by a gate and be forced to trespass through some guy's ranch only to turn around ;)

Karson,

Do you want to determine the stock clamping force? It is actually pretty easy. It would be a good data point to know to make sure the mods you made are doing what you thought they were.

It should just be a diaphragm spring. If you can get down to just the spring portion, we should be able to stack known weights on top and measure the deflection to get a general idea of the "rate" of the spring.

Post a pic or two of the stock piece and let's see what we can figure out.

Yeah either run all blacks or alternate gold + green to get 300. if there weren't so many GD bolts and risk of mucking up the gasket on the side cover, i'd be more experimental. but i think i'll be content in terms of prevention concerns with what i've got.

should i still get the neighbor's wife to come over and stand on that diaphragm spring and check deflection? i just peeked out the window - gotta be at least deuce fifty hiding in there some where.

Are your greens proper length?

You might be able to use 3-bond in place of that gasket...

Might still be a fun experiment.

The black springs offer about 60+ pounds extra force.. The green ones are going to offer about 100+ pounds.. They are not the correct length.. I've contacted them and they are sending out proper ones... If any customers have the Barnett clutch plate and it came with green springs and you wish to use them contact Barnett or myself and we will get you stiffer springs sent out to you...

Karson!!! You did not say that!

In fact, I suggest you drop all references to ladies weight for the next.....um....9 months. Maybe even more. Hormones= heightened sensitivity to male crudity.

Just for the record...

Without knowing the specific amount of preload is on each spring after being torqued down - whether it be the stock diaphragm spring or 6 of the Barnett springs - there is no way to know what the true clamping force is on the clutch pack.

And though both are torsion bar springs - one a flat leaf type and the other torsion coils - each type reacts entirely differently to levels of preload.

Just FYI...

Are you saying your neighbors wife has a large "Front Butt?"

(Sorry, I have no technical knowledge to offer on this or any other topic.)

The engineers at Barnett know all this info and they have the correct tools to tell us all the correct info... They have been clutch experts for 60+ years.. That's where I got the numbers I posted and they print on there tech sheet.

I understand, and agree with, Barnett's expertise, Jaxon, and I'm sure those spring rates are totally accurate. Wasn't questioning that in any way.

Simply noting that figures were given for spring rates, but not for preload. Without knowing that there is no real way to directly compare the clamping force of each type spring set-up. Nothing more than that. No need for you to be sensitive about it.

I'm sure the Barnett kit is a nice piece of kit. I've never been a fan of their fiber clutch plate material (and as I recall, neither are you), but everything else they make is great stuff. I've used a lot of Barnett components over the years, and never had a problem with any of it...

Well, other than the fiber material on their clutch plates, as mentioned. ::025::

I'm not sensitive about talking about motorcycle parts... :D I'm sure the engineers have all the specs you mentioned.. I do know it has a smoother feel and doesn't slip as easy..

Yea, Ill stick with stock fiber and steel plates.... Try and get 100K out of them..

BTW, Karson, whatcha think of it ? Again, nice job on the write up!

Dallara,

Check again. The info sheet Karson threw up shows "force at distance". That isn't the rate, that is the actual force at a given preload. Now...I'm not sure if that preload number is the installed preload, but if it wasn't that would be pretty dumb.

I have no idea how Barnett determined the force on the stock setup, but I assume it would be right?

I'm still amazed that anyone has gotten true clutch slip from the Tenere. I can't fathom that the 150 could get enough traction on any surface to cause the clutch to slip. I've essentially tried. I've held my throttle WOT and hit the quick shifter up through 4th gear. Never felt a lick of slip. The motor never revved up faster than the bike accelerated.

I am curious how the clutch feels with the new setup. Yamaha uses similar setups on ALL of their dirt bikes. It seems the diaphragm is more of a street setup for whatever reason.
