Next Project!

Getting a bit nervous though, never did this type of job on a moto before...

Read it, read it again. Really easy with a few tools (basket removal tool and 32mm ? socket) Will take about 45-60 mins, on side stand, in gear and no oil dripping out. Koinz was a great help.

You'll like the feel. The extra mass changes how the motor feels, very nice.

All,
Another clutch basket change just completed. Its 32 out so no ride but starting it up in the garage it is definitely quieter and absolutely no rattle! Will follow-up with a ride report.
Take lots of pictures before you tear into it and take things off in a definitive order. Also when putting the pressure plate back on make sure the slots on the back of it are engaged into the hub then tighten the spring plate back down.

Doubt it's the basket's fault...
And why would you say that Don?

With clutch engaged it's quiet when disengaged it has a bit of a clatter and when using the clutch while shifting there is not much of a clutch to use. Clutch lever is all the way up to the max for adjustment. I use to have it like three clicks back from max.
It's real short from engage to disengage.

I haven't taken anything apart yet to look at plates and basket. At 58k now around 25k since I had the 14 basket installed and it has been great till the last few months. :'(

Sounds like you're describing Yamaha's infamous diaphragm pressure plate, not the basket. The basket is just a chunk of spinning metal that happens to hold a bunch of moving wear items. Had you done the tensioner yet? That clatter could be chain related, loading and unloading and all that. You could prolly get away with just doing a Barnett pressure plate and have it all good again. I put a Barnett in my Royal Star at about 54k, 5th gear slip, 4th gear w/trailer, on top of the old discs and steels, ran 'em through to 110k when I got the Ténéré. At 54k everything still mic'd good, just the diaphragm had lost it's tension.

Thank's Don!!
Yep Cam chain tension is fine I didn't know Yamaha had a infamous diaphragm pressure plate issue no one on the forum has mentioned it that I know of.
I am not afraid of digging into the clutch never did it just afraid of Efing it up or something as my mechanic is 50 miles away..

Don's right about the pressure plate. The Barnett pressure plate works so smooth you'll never want to go back to a diaphragm spring again.

I haven't tried the Barnett plate that OldRider mentioned but would trust his experience if replacing mine!

Any suggestions on what Barnett pressure plate to get and I may as well change the clutch plates while I am at it.
What would be your setup on a budget?

There is only one spring kit, but with different spring tensions..

Might check with Jaxon on pricing, but that Ebay price sounds about right on the pressure plate. I've read many reports of replacing the friction bits with Yamaha, the aftermarket, not Barnett in particular, the aftermarket just don't hold up as well as OEM.

Damn the 2012 OEM plates and everything in between plus washers and nut comes out to $232.00 alone.
Not as budget as I was hoping.

http://www.yamahapartshouse.com/oemparts/a/yam/5004d840f87002275461de72/clutch

I know I need gasket, nut, washer both set of plates, I haven't had it opened yet to check the clutch plate wear but she is at over 50k.
But honestly I have not felt any slippage or the symptoms of bad plates in that department at all, just noise and pissy short lever action.

I just want to note this bad clutch basket theory was determined by my Mechanic of 10 years just by feel and listening to the noise as he installed the 14 basket for me over a year ago, I trust him as he has been in business over 25 years Road and dirt bike repair.
Now exactly what he was referring to clutch basket? was it the assembly on the hole or the basket is a guess. I am starting to lean in the direction with Dons theory, as I seem to be the first with a 14 basket to bring this up!

But do I need the following if I decide to go all the way?
4.Plate, Seat
36Y-16384-00-00
$10.47
5. Spring, Cushion
36Y-16383-00-00
$29.73
6.Plate, Friction 2
4XV-16331-00-00
$9.52
7. Plate, Clutch 2
2H7-16325-00-00
$8.78
8.Ring Set
2H7-16385-00-00
$9.31
11. Plate, Friction
5YU-16321-00-00
$11.60
I am looking at another 50 to 60k+ before I retire the Ten, is the Barnett plates with spring kit going to get me there if I need to replace plates? The price covers my budget for sure.
I am not making the cash I use to so I am going into this myself any help will be gratefully apeceated. Like how to install the barnett plates if I need to and spring tension recommendations ?
I have all the sockets but what other tools will I need besides a punch?
This doesn't seem to be a big job and am not a novice to working on stuff my old 89 Ford Ranger had me under the hood and on the ground many times as well as working on my older dirt bikes years ago!!
But as I stated before I don't want to screw it up and will hate to run into more unseen issues along the way.. ::010::
I love this bike it's most likely going to be my last.
I Just read Jaxon's Barnett install seems straight forward, may just pop the PP on and see how that works before I determine the clutch plate wear after, whats the price of a gasket?
