A gasket is really inexpensive, but most of the time you will never need one if you are careful. Go with the pressure spring plate for now, if there are no signs of slippage then leave the plate alone until you change out the basket. if any help at all, I have a brand new gasket that I never used, am happy to post to you from the US, in the next week when the outlaws leave to go back to the States. Your's free.

Thanks Dog that's being a true member.
I will PM my address.
I am thinking Don's right the OEM plate does look rather primitive and ready for failure, but I don't want to Jinx myself yet!! ;D

Damn the 2012 OEM plates and everything in between plus washers and nut comes out to $232.00 alone.
Not as budget as I was hoping.

I know I need gasket, nut, washer both set of plates, I haven't had it opened yet to check the clutch plate wear but she is at over 50k.
But honestly I have not felt any slippage or the symptoms of bad plates in that department at all, just noise and pissy short lever action.

I just want to note this bad clutch basket theory was determined by my Mechanic of 10 years just by feel and listening to the noise as he installed the 14 basket for me over a year ago, I trust him as he has been in business over 25 years Road and dirt bike repair.
Now exactly what he was referring to clutch basket? was it the assembly on the hole or the basket is a guess. I am starting to lean in the direction with Dons theory, as I seem to be the first with a 14 basket to bring this up!

But do I need the following if I decide to go all the way?
4.Plate, Seat
36Y-16384-00-00
$10.47
5. Spring, Cushion
36Y-16383-00-00
$29.73
6.Plate, Friction 2
4XV-16331-00-00
$9.52
7. Plate, Clutch 2
2H7-16325-00-00
$8.78
8.Ring Set
2H7-16385-00-00
$9.31
11. Plate, Friction
5YU-16321-00-00
$11.60
I am looking at another 50 to 60k+ before I retire the Ten, is the Barnett plates with spring kit going to get me there if I need to replace plates? The price covers my budget for sure.
I am not making the cash I use to so I am going into this myself any help will be gratefully apeceated. Like how to install the barnett plates if I need to and spring tension recommendations ?
I have all the sockets but what other tools will I need besides a punch?
This doesn't seem to be a big job and am not a novice to working on stuff my old 89 Ford Ranger had me under the hood and on the ground many times as well as working on my older dirt bikes years ago!!
But as I stated before I don't want to screw it up and will hate to run into more unseen issues along the way.. ::010::
I love this bike it's most likely going to be my last.
I Just read Jaxon's Barnett install seems straight forward, may just pop the PP on and see how that works before I determine the clutch plate wear after, whats the price of a gasket?
Jaxon's wright up>> http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=7133.0
You need 6, 9, & 11 plus a gasket. Everything else is reusable. I don't have the springs specs in front of me, but I know I did go with the middle tension. Works good for me.

So to help me in not having to read every post, could someone tell me what the benefits of upgrading my clutch basket are on my 2012? I have heard of others doing it but have not heard the reason behind it. Thanks in advance.

I must be one of the last ones to do this upgrade and it is well worth it. It completely cured my hands going numb from the buzz and makes the engine feel much smoother under acceleration. The steady state vibration on the freeway at 4K RPM feels the same but my hands are doing much better so it was definitely reduced there as well. I was able to do all this on the center stand without oil coming out and I was able to recycle the hub nut by prying the indentation up with a small screwdriver.

I should have done this first and fixed the root cause of the vibration rather than wasting money on gel gloves and different types of grips.

Like going from using a pneumatic jack hammer to a handheld blender.
Night and day.. Along with a ECU flash it's what this bike should be other than the High idle low idle to stall syndrome on some of the Gen 1 bikes..
Still running low octane on my bike has kept it at a minimum.
Why? I don't know.. :(

So I am finally getting around to doing this mod on my S10 (def late to the party!). Does this parts list look complete to do the Clutch Basket, CCT and Clutches? I'll probably get the Barnett Pressure Plate as well since I'll have it all open.

Why are you replacing the CCT bolts and the clutch friction plates?

Unless they have been abused or are showing clear indications of slippage and have high miles, it's rarely necessary to replace the clutch plates themselves. And there is no reason to replace the Clutch Boss unless you've damaged it during removal. Which is unlikely with the EBC clutch tool and the correct 30mm socket. An impact wrench really helps in getting the nut off. The Clutch Boss Spring, (Cushing Spring), is listed as a replace item, but it's easy enough to remove and replace it w/o damage IF you are swapping plates. If you're not swapping plates, you won't be taking it off the Clutch Boss. It retains the very last plate which stays captured on the Clutch Boss. And while I recommend getting the cover gasket, it usually stays intact and is re-useable if not damaged. I had my cover off 3 times and it never needed to be replaced. (So now I have a new gasket still in the plastic bag that I'll probably never use.) Oh, and I hope those prices are in CAD not USD or you're paying too much. ;) I've put a strike thru the parts you don't need if you don't have a compelling reason to replace the clutch plates and Clutch Boss.

As an aside, where did you get these part numbers and names. There are minor inconsistencies and errors.

I wasn't sure if the CCT bolts were reusable or not. I was going to replace to clutch friction plates since I was going to have the whole thing apart anyways. I've felt slippage under heavy acceleration so I figure if I'm going to change the pressure plate, might as well change the friction plates.

For the prices and names, those are from PArtszilla in USD. I've just started looking around for best prices so if you had any suggestions on a cheaper place I am all ears!

Ok, the second valve check/adjustment is coming up. Might want to consider doing that and the CCT at the same time. Or having it done...

It would be somewhat odd if the clutch disks needed replacing at only 50k, (W/O an abusive issue like stuck in mud, etc). I've not had to replace clutch plates on the last three Yamaha bikes I took over 100k. One to 160k w/o any slipping, but that was a street bike, (FJR).

Under what conditions/use do you notice slipping? Typically the first area you will notice slipping is heavy throttle in higher gears at lower rpms. You may need the disks, but let's just say I'm doubtful.

Over the years, as robust as the clutch is in this BEAST, there have been a few shredded-totaled-melted clutches.
I could be wrong, but in ALL instances it was related to either an off-road ride with traction control setting on 1, resulting in the rider feathering the clutch to overcome the incorrect traction control setting, OR a Tenere being completely caked in tire mud and unable to proceed forward without excessive clutch slipping.

Or put another way, the clutch in the Super Tenere is amply robust enough for the normal abuse that riding the Beast requires. (On and Off-road)
But at 600 lbs, and being the Biggest Dirt Bike In The World, it is more than capable of destroying the clutch if it is hammered with intentional (manual) clutch slipping.

Oh, and I too support adding the Barnet product to the upgraded clutch basket. Why not build a better overall clutch when you do decide to upgrade? :)

Thanks to Koinz, Dogdaze and Don in Lodi for the write-up and the encouragement to do this Basket swap. All I can say is WOW! This makes the bike feel brand new!!! THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A RECALL though, as the difference is Day and Night.
