I will ask TwistedThrottle this question as well!!!! DO your adapter brackets for the Pelican cases fit the Pelican 1430 top load box, or the 1450 case? I like these two cases for a bike and want someone to make a bracket for them to fit either a GIVI mount or something else.
We have a set of 1440's here that I ent and looked at. If the 1430 and the 1450 are just different volumes of the 1440 then the short answer is - no. You need a flat surface and the structural ribs ruin this. here is a diagram of the case adapter hardware you will see why you need the flat surface:

If you are creative with spacers you might be able to make the cases fit. What needs to happen is the "horse shoe" has to stay flat to catch the spools on the carriers like this:

and this:

In this image it is a little more difficult to understand.
There are two spools on the front of the adapter plate that the "horse shoe" slides into. Then the lock snaps into the the back side of the top plate.

Just to say it again... you may be able to use a set of spacers at the bottom 2 mounting points to level the case out so that the "horse shoe" fits squarely on the rack. I think it is worth the aggravation. These are an excellent locking quick- release set up that won't let you down. Our designer Nate spent a lot of time making this work well and we all stand behind the system.

Thanks for your response. I may sit and think about this for a couple of days. I want to start ordering stuff incrementally before the bike gets here. This will ease the overall look of $15 grand going out at once!!!

The smart way to shop.... it doesn't hurt as much when it is little bits at a time. Have a good holiday.

Sorry... I went on the premise that you already had the Pelican cases and was looking for a solution. I fyou haven't bought them yet I would suggest the 1550's or the IM2600's. We sell the latter. If you go with either of these you just bolt and go. no fidgeting. They fit either side or top easily so you can use any of the three on the side or top. Hereis a shot of a tiny little DRX400 SM with a IM2600 Pelican case installed. It is the bike of the system's designer:

If it fits this bike then there is no question about the S10....

You can get the whole 3 case setup with IM2600 cases in one shot here: http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/5578

I didn't want that large of box as the 1550. I had GIVI E21 Litre on my DL1000 VSTrom as saddlebags and it was plenty. I also used the E36 Monokey for the Top Box and after using it, I want something smaller. I normally go for items with little concern for money, but now with a kid on the way I am trying to go as inexpensive as possible and still maintain the use of one of the quality manufacturers. I am not going with some JC Whitney box or SHAD or COOS!!!
The only time I use the side bags is for an airport stay (work trips) or an overnighter (1-2 times a year).
What are the external dimentions on the Trax top box (small one)?

I just did a few quick measurements: 14" depth x 16" wide x 13" tall approximate. 38 total liters.

check out cariboucases.com. There is a gallery of many bikes with their pelican case system. strong, lightweight, waterproof, and lower cost than OEM.

Ptf, Thanks for that. I have been talking with George at Caribou already and he says The 1500 case is the smallest i can go. I just don't believe it in some ways. I can modify stuff generally to work.

Thanks for the discussion on this confusing and costly decision. Hopefully I'm not taking the thread off track.

For myself, I'm drawn to either the cost/durability of the Pelicans or the size/durability of the Micatechs. My favorite cases based simply on looks (sitting on the Tenere) are the Givi Trekkers. The hard angles of most cases seems to clash with the Tenere. In the end I'm a guy, and for real men its function before form everytime. ::) OK - my attempt at humor.

I'm trying to decide if it's realistic to believe I can stuff everything into two side cases? If that's possible, then the Michatechs are my choice. Does anyone have expereince with this idea? Or is this a noob inspired exercise in the absurd?

In past travels I've used every bit of the 80 liters that my Ortlieb bicycling panniers offered, and I still needed to strap things to the top rack; like the tent, shoes, etc. Using that experience as a frame of reference, I know that I can't go less than 80 liters volume for side luggage capacity. I can't help to wonder if an extra 20 liters of side luggage space would be enough to hold all of my gear without the need to strap anything to the seat and maybe eliminate the need for a top case altogether? 100 liters total volume sound awfully large for two cases. Hmmm?

TIA

mrpincher, packing area space varies for everyone. Some pack light and some don't. I for one can pack my tent, sleeping bag and a small lantern in one 21 litre saddle bag. Then other stuff in my 36L top case and the other 21 litre side bag. I have even done in the past a 1 month trip to Alaska using not much more than that and done well. Over the years and hearing lots of people pack for trips, I have heard them say pack everything you want, but only what you need. WHen I have to purchase updated stuff, I buy stuff that a backpacker may carry...all tiny items. I can fit my lantern and cook stove inside my mess kit for example. Enjoy

I was leading towards the Pelicans, but now for logistics sake the Givi Trekkers.

Besides the physical space you have to pack, careful selection of gear makes a huge impact on how much you can take. For example I use a snugpak 3 season sleeping bag and a bivvy bag which packs down to about the size of a football and is rated to 20 degrees. My tent, sleeping bag, stove, food and water fit in one bag. My tool roll, extra clothing, radio, batteries, additional water, toilet articles and my keens (footwear for after the ride), and more go in the other. The only things I have strapped to the rear rack is mu go cot, A kermit chair, and a mesh wet bag for soiled laundry. (on the trip out, I store micro fiber rags, plexus, and some misc items in it). If I'm going two up, I add a second go-cot tot he rack. All neat and tidy.

I'm planning on going with the micatech V2 bags. What you do will depend on how you like to camp. I no longer want to "rough it" as I had my share of that during my service int he Marines. I am very comfortable and take all I need this way. My suggestion would be to explore some light weight back packing gear along with your decision on how you want to travel and what you want to pack. I have a diagram and a check list I review before each trip.

I used to do the "minimalist", backpacking thing and if I was "humping it", I took only the bare necessities. Now that I've run a motorized "mule", I take a lot more comfort stuff. I still take my backpacking gear (down bag, Jet Boil, etc.), but supplement it with a Kelty Wing tarp w/poles, Exped down mat, cribbage board, 3 person tent, etc.

I still haven't seen anything that I like better than Micatech's V2 cases, but the search continues....

I hear you on the V2's. I love the side opening bags and the way I pack, I put everything in some packing "cubes" I found at REI. Some people complain that when you open your bag, things spill out, but I have not found that to be the case packing like I do. Noting sucked more than being on the road, needing something packed away and having to unstrap the items loaded on the rear to get into the bags. With side openings, you just pop the bag open, grab what you need and go. I think there may be a group buy brewing for the Micatechs, so stay tuned!

Kevin,
Do you have the dimensions for the two sizes of Trax side panniers as well?

Thanks!
