I've had a set of Caribou's on my DL 1000 for 4 years now. They are tough cases and the mounting system is very robust. I like the side openers like some of you other guys. I travel with a large, waterproof bag (Sealine), strapped across the seat, and being able to access the side cases without having to unstrap the bag on the seat is a big deal for me. When I'm traveling heavy, I'll strap stuff on top of the side cases. A top opener would be a real pain in the butt. I also run a Caribou #1550, top case (with a Givi top rack fitted), set on a Touratech quick release mount. Slick.
Having said all that, I'm looking at the Micatech V2, 37 liter cases w/ SW Motech mounts. I like the looks of them, they're side openers and can be closed and latched without having to lock them (just like Caribou's). They're made of 2 mm thick aluminum sheet as opposed to what appears to be the standard 1.5 mm thickness. They radius their corners, less work hardening as compared to a small radius bend. I also like the idea that you have a degree of adjustability of case placement on the mounting rack. Up/down, fore/aft of 1.75". Nice for fine tuning balance/cornering clearance, IMO. They also use two, formed channel section, stiffening braces on the in-board and out-board sides of the case, which should serve to strengthen and reduce the possibility of "oil canning", and resonance due to vibration when empty. They have a two tone paint option, also.
I used to manage a custom, fabricating shop and these look to be a well thought out and well executed design.
I may go with another Caribou top case as I love mine.
I don't work for Micatech. Just my own observations and opinions.
