autoteach, I haven't chimed in on the hard starting thread (http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=2149.0) for some time and I hope you share your wisdom there where it belongs and may serve best. Suffice to say, a good number of owners have been affected by this problem and wouldn't classify it's cause as an unskilled wrist. That could well be a component, but highly unlikely over the number of knowledgeable rider's having shared their experiences. An engine not starting on demand is a problem, especially so for riders with lesser experience. Kindly take this up with me via PM or on that thread if you're inclined. For it's potential, this thread needs to stay pure.

Well if we're adding hard starts you can put me down for three of those between the two bikes.

At the rate this is growing I suspect Yamaha is not going to be all that impressed with the number of people reporting an issue in this thread.
The more issues that people come forward with, the more likely they are going to do something about it.
As noticed in their latest model, they are willing to address complaints and issues on their new bike, as well as some part upgrades (headlight harness).
But the fact that they have not done much about the spokes, and the like, seems to me that they could use some feed back from their users.

after all, no news is good news for them.

Truer words were never written.

But as somebody working in the safety field, I've written it before and will here again. If you have failed spokes or ANYTHING else that is a safety concern, file it at

https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/
or link to it from www.safercar.gov

This is the NHTSA site for logging safety complaints and it trumps complaining to the manufacturers. Keep your input brief, keep it honest and factual, but DO log your problems. Yamaha monitors this site closely, as it is where recalls may start from.

And WE are being totally ineffective.

Of all the bitching I see here, for the 2012 model year I only see 2 complaints logged for wheel spokes and 2 for headlamp harnesses. There are exactly ZERO complaints logged for any issue in any 2013 Super Tenere.

this might be a stupid question...
If I bought it in the states...but reside in Canada,
do I log on the US site? guessing so.

Good point above, I will enter my issues in.
Wonder if the poor fuelling could be noted as well (off idle stuble, stalling at intersections etc...)

I think it's worthwhile as well to be vocal to the actual reps at shows. I still think that they should actually do a survey with existing owners... the typical one page questionare..
are you happy with it? would you buy again if give the choice? what would you like to see improved/fixed..

pretty simple really.

Chalk up another one for hard start/ flood out. Easy enough to clear pulling the FI fuse. Glad I had sense enough to search for the thread on the subject in here. Dont know if temps could be a factor with this issue but I parked mine after riding home from work with mid 70's outside, came back a few days later after it had cooled down to the 40's & that was all she wrote. No warning at all & no amount of working the loud handle would help.
For what its worth, the few times Ive run into something similar to this with 4 wheel EFI, its been fuel pressure regulator related. (Just a educated guess) I do hope that the Yama-folks will take time to look into it, even if intermittents like this are the most aggrivating issues to deal with. (I hate those things)

On a side note: It would be interesting to see the results of a separate poll for the 'hard start' issue to see how many with that gremlin have adjusted their CO setting vs those who have not, just to see if there is a possible correlation.

My 2012 Tenere has 35,000 miles and only a few minor issues:

1. one lost spoke nipple on rear wheel. My fault, I should have checked the spokes at 600 mile oil change.

2. right headlight fail/ left headlamp connector cooked (replaced under YES)

3. and just today, bad starter relay.

Oh, 2 hard starts WOT got it going.

You can register a Dirt_Mom and Dirt_Dad for the hard start issue.

Sorry Dallara, I know it's in both our imaginations.
