Before BWC sent me this information... the dealer was very concerned with the amount of carbon build up in the combustion chamber, on the valves, and on the valve seats. After receiving this information I shared it with the dealer and they knew about it and use it but apparently don't suggest the use of it to the customer.

The photo's really sold me on the idea of using Yamaha Ring Free Plus... unless we can discover how to reduce the carbon build up. What causes the carbon build up? Carbon caused by "unburnt fuel" or "burnt oil"? The last tank of gas the Tenere did use more oil than it ever had.

California 'Crap Gas' gasoline is the worse in the USA. Sinclair offers a non-Ethanol 91 octane 'Rocket Fuel' (not in California). Found the non-Ethanol Sinclair gas in Wyoming, Montana, and North East Idaho.

If Premium gasoline needs higher compression rates to burn clean... do we need Premuim gasoline with a 11 to 1 compression ratio?

GOOD NEWS!!!

The Service Manager called today letting me know Yamaha contacted him. Yamaha approved all the requested parts plus they want the lower timing gear to be replaced. They will be replacing everything other than the cylinders and the head. Cams, cam gears, cam chain, cam chain tensioner, valves and all the valve components, pistons & rings, and ??? He will be ordering the parts tomorrow.

Made my day!!!

ps - they have had my Tenere since 1/27/2015 but the first week was a wash since it was already scheduled for service a week later.

Glad you got approval so quickly. Sounds like you have a better dealer than I have, by far. And you're getting a few more parts than I did!! Hope I don't have any problems with the parts they didn't replace. :(

THAT is how a customer is supposed to feel when they face misfortune with a warranty issue!

You made my day. And good on Yamaha for living up to the reputation that lots of us have expected in the past.
Sure hope next time I get to have that feeling. You know, where my business and loyalty seems to be appreciated? :)

Ride, R I D E, oh RIDE. That is what other riders do with their motorcycle :D

I am hoping to get a 600+ mile http://goo.gl/maps/3FqSy two-day twisty mountainous break-in ride with a oil & filter change... then a 1,000+ mile ( if the Sierra passes are open ::001:: ) three-day ride with a oil & filter change... then I will be ready to ride :)

MORE GOOD NEWS

Just spoke with the Service Manager. Yamaha had asked him to inspect the cam chain gear on the crankshaft and send photos. The gear is pressed on the crankshaft. Yamaha authorized the crankshaft to be replaced. The only parts not being replaced are the connecting rods, cylinders, and head. All the parts have been ordered and the parts guy (in the service department) will be tracking the ordered parts. Let us pray all the parts are available.

Also, I am replacing the Clutch Basket with the 2014 Clutch Basket... so there will not be any charges for the installation.

The good thing is that part of my life keeps on getting better... Thank you PCP Motorsports Service Department and Yamaha USA.

Nice to hear some positive news regarding the repair and the service provided by the dealer. ::008::
This is the lower timing chain sprocket and it is part of the crankshaft. With your bike having fairly low mileage there should be next to no wear on the sprocket, but it will be interesting to see if Yamaha authorizes a crankshaft change to go along with the rest of the repair parts that are to be replaced. Here's hoping for a quick turn around and your back on the road soon. ::001::

Because of the lower timing chain sprocket... Yamaha did authorize the replacement of the crankshaft. The only engine parts NOT being replaced are the connecting rods, cylinders, and the head (valves and parts will be replaced). More than $4,000.00 in parts. Engine has to be remove and split to replace the crankshaft. The labor costs should also be a chunk of cash.

Seeing the prices folks are getting their bike's lately, and the estimated tag price you posted just for parts..., I almost want to buy another Ténéré just to have spare parts handy. ;D

Maybe you could talk to the people in charge and get them to credit you for the new OEM cam chain tensioner and use the cash to buy an aftermarket manual one. ::013:: Although I don't think Yamaha would see the humor in that :D You will get to do that new bike break in all over again. Good news all around.

NEWS

Good news is they placed the order. Not so good news is eight parts are back ordered with an expected arrival date of 4/27/2014.

I have had worse news. This makes my Texas Rio Grande and Coastal Southern states trip later than I had planned.

Tim, have seen several cases in the last couple years where backordered Yamaha parts arrived before their expected delivery date. Good luck.

Other than the '14 clutch basket frenzy, my experience with Yamaha's back ordered status is that they tend to pad the ETA quite a bit. On more than one occasion I've had the parts much sooner than expected. I recently had a piece back ordered and was told 6 weeks but my dealer received it in 10 days all the way from Japan. Hope you get the same treatment and are back up and running sooner than expected...

Thanks Fred. I agree... but eight parts. Have to keep being optimistic. They said most of the the backordered parts were parts that were involved in the CCT failure including the crankshaft (lower timing sprocket). I am thankful the worst part is complete... the approval of the warranty and parts. Also found out that the dealer will match the online price of the Clutch Basket or their cost, whatever is the lowest price. Thankful to PCP Motorsports.

Honestly Tim, ... a crankshaft? What did you do? Put that thing in reverse going down the freeway?
Ha! The "Lower Cam Chain Sprocket" is permanently attached to the crankshaft. It was Yamaha's request to replace the Sprocket. I doubt the crankshaft has any other than normal wear.

Tomorrow I am pulling my 2005 KLR out of the dark part of the garage to start putting it back together. Haven't ridden it since June 2011. Guessing the fuel tank and carburetor needs some attention.

I noticed on Partzilla the other day... there's a part number for a complete engine, can't remember the exact price but it was in the $6000-7000 range. You would almost think it would be better for Yamaha to do a complete replacement? Be the time you add in labor for the rebuild, it couldn't be that much different?
