Hello EricV.
I hear your comments and this resume life long discussion about after market exhaust.
Lot of bike with high mounted exhaust does not have heat shield. (ducati monster for example).
Also, if you ask the hot chick to sit on the bike, you will see her beautiful legs are far in front of the exhaust….the closest part of her anatomy to the exhaust is her beautifully shaped bud. but even that, not even close to get melted by the heat.
The only concern i have now with the plastic cover off, is to melt strapped camping bag on passenger seat. This is why i have not yet chopped the tabs.
I always did install aftermarket exhaust and fine tune the fueling, it is amazing how much difference it make, especially at low to mid range rpm. One again, manufacturer cannot do that from factory as bike must comply with noise and emission law.
THe other benefit, is the weight saving, the Yoshi weight a mere 3.9Kg (8.59Lbs) while the parts I have removed weight 6.8Kg. (15.2Lbs). THis is a huge saving knowing that the ST is quite heavy. (556Lbs Vs 520Lbs for BMW GS, 564Lbs for 2012 GSA with oil and fuel. compare same year and model)
You are correct, with pannier on it, nobody knows which exhaust is mounted, but I do not farkle my bike for other but to fit my ridding.
If I want the ultimate symphony and bullet train torque machine, i take my 999, one again with custom exhaust made in house from existing part, race ecu, ported head and so on…all for same reasons as above.
