For you folks who have done the install, why do they want you to remove the left side panels? I looked over the directions twice but saw nothing to indicate that this was needed. I sure didn't see why.

TIA,
I belive when routing the cables in the kit it is easier with the tank off/lifted. To do that they suggest to temporary re-route those two tubes for.. Overrun fuel.. Or what they do? And maybe loosen some bolt there.

I managed to route the cables without moving the tank though.

Re-routing the two tubes allows you to lift the tank. Otherwise when lifting the tank, they will pull off.

I did not need to lift the tank or remove the left side panels to do the install on my grips.

Yeah, you just pull them free of the hook-shaped retainer, then pull upwards to create some slack. I suppose you could call that a temporary 're-route.' :-\

Troll nice post. If at all possible could you take a picture of the backside of the OEM temp dial. Just so I have a reference of how its done

The angle bracket that the temp dial is screwed to or mounted on is bent at an acute angle and needs to be opened up just a bit to improve clearance.

What kind of grip glue on the left bar did everyone use? My grips will be here Tuesday so I ordered a tube of yamabond 7 which it calls for.

I used some Renthal grip glue that I had from another install. One thing to keep in mind, you will not need much grip glue. The left grip is very rigid and goes on snug. I only put a small amount of glue on and it was tough getting the grip in place. It has not moved any since the install either.

Just got my kit today. My instructions are missing pages 13 & 14 that deal with the wiring route and connections. Could someone scan that page and post it for me? Thanks

+1! I had to drive the left grip on with no glue what so ever. No shifting that I can detect. I tried them out on the morning commute today. On high they will cook yer mitts!

Just grousing: Ordered mine last Tuesday, 9/20. Confirmed to be in US stock and promised for late last week, or early this week. Called this Tuesday and confirmed in US stock and should be in today's shipment. Called today: back ordered and a month out (Yamaha to ship to dealers 10/21). Order cancelled.

Back to drawing board. Liked the look of David's (Tiger_one) Oxfords.

I didn't use any glue as the grip was quite tight. It could possibly rotate if it got really wet but I doubt it. I may change bars at some point and don't want to fuss with removing a glued grip.

As mentioned earlier, the hole you have to drill in the bars is not inboard enough to allow for heat expansion of the grip. When the grip is hot it binds a little with the bar-end weight on the throttle side. Also, with the new throttle mounting position, the throttle cables cross directly in line-of-sight of the instrument cluster. My solution was to re-drill the bar hole in the same plane as the original (stock throttle) hole only inboard slightly more than the new (heated throttle) hole. I then reverted to the original front brake lever clamp (w/o the offset mirror mount). All is now good with only a slightly longer reach to the kill switch which i rarely use. No binding and cables don't cross the instrument cluster. I also flipped the heat controller clamp over too.

Did someone mention these things get really hot. Much more than my GSA did.

Finally did the install yesterday. As others posted it is fairly easy and even a caveman like me can do it. I had issues with the throttle side housing assembly. Basically, I was "overthinking" it. The throttle cables were easy, I was trying to get the heating wire around the throttle tube. Once I gave up and stuffed it in without care, it worked?!?

Got the left side grip off without cutting. I just squirted water underneath the grip and kept working it. Same with putting the new one on. Used water and it slipped on with minimal effort. Did the upside down controller bracket that Troll shows. Works great and looks better than the "stock" install. As far as running the wires into the battery area, I already have a couple sets of wires ran in the same path as was needed for the grips (between the tank and frame). The best way I found to run the wires without raisingng the tank: I use a 2 foot long plastic wire tie to fish through the area. The wires are taped on the end, and then pulled through. Easy and works for me.

Also, I did not notice the throttle wires blocking the view of the instrument cluster. Yes, the cable do stick up higher, but the only blocked area for me is the "clock" on the cluster. I do have one-inch bar risers installed, so maybe they change the path of the cables enough to not fully block the view.

Now I'm ready for cold weather riding. ::016::

I used my factory heated grips for the first time on some chilly mornings in Arkansas last weekend. As with the FJR, they work great. I also got some new gloves from Firstgear specifically made to work with heated grips. These gloves are not insulated in the palm, are leather and are completely waterproof. You still have great feel for your controls and easily feel the warmth from the grips. A great combo.

It also feels like Yam did a better job of preserving the softer, tackier feel of the OEM handgrips with these. My FJR heated grips feel harder and slicker than these. They're pricey but imho, worth it.

+1! I too got to use the grips this past weekend, but in West Virginia. Left Snowshow in 37 degree temps and never got above 50 all the way back to Cbus. The grips worked great. Had steady rain from Clarksburg most of the way to Athens, OH. My Kilimajaro is no longer water proof as both sleeves leaked and the inner liner was soaked. Without the grip heaters and electrics I probably would not have made it home Saturday.

FYI, got a tip many, many years ago that has served me well. Hair spray. ::024::
Yep, hair spray.
Bought a squirt bottle (not spray although I've been told it works just as well) of the stuff several years ago and have installed at least 10 sets of grips with it.
Squirt some into the grip, slides right on. Allow 24hrs to dry and no slips/problems in all those years. Also makes removal MUCH easier.
Added bonus is my hair (what little is left) is now always in place..... ::025::

Where ever i am told to be
upside down mounting bracket

For those that flipped the mounting bracket. Troll mentioned he has shorter bars so I was wondering if anyone else that did this mod had clearance issues with the tank at full left lock?

thanks

Might have missed this (so sorry in advance if so) but does anyone know a good online source to order the Yamaha kit? I have obvioulsy gotten lazy in my old age and prefer having a brown box waiting on the porch when I get home.

I flipped the bracket and do not have risers or cut bars. It does not hit the tank. If you had your bars rotated back in the clamps, you could get it to touch.

PM lotecredneck. He's affiliated with (or is) a dealer. Has 'em in stock. Gave me a great price. No affiliation, just a happy customer.

Question regarding the heated grips...
Is it necessary to have the nub on the throttle housing?? Just seem to hold it in place (which is also accomplished simply by tightening the assembly. I have previously (when changing handlebars) just ground off all the nubs on the various controls rather than hassle with the drilling. Makes it easier to position the controls afterwords. Any thoughts on this??
