I had sold what was the best road bike ever for me, an 04 zx4r and bought a 650 KLR for some ADV riding.
I liked that bike way more than anyone should And for one person it was perfect, two up not so much.
I was looking at used v strom 1000s as well as FJRs. I really was not overly impressed with the strom, the power seemed bland and the bike top heavy, I was also tired of worrying how much someone beat the damn thing.
There were no close FJRs or storms so I took a trip to look at a test model which was still. 3.5 hour drive away.
The bike blew me away, and the price was right and while I was not looking for man aftermarket pipe and power commander I decided that I loved the way it aoudad and since I liked the setup overall I would buy it.
1000 miles later with my longest day an easy 400 miles here are my thoughts.
Pros
The bike handles dirt better than the KLR, the low center of gravity is confidence inspiring.
Wonderful torque
I like the ability to turn the TC off although I find myself leaving it on one.
Looks are amazing
Handles crazy well, I need to dial in the front, nothing big but my zx was track tuned so something I notice.
Fairly comfy
Cons
Vibration when accelerating, I did not notice it during the test ride, it may be getting better or I am used to it, not sure but it's not as noticeable now.
Right hand falls asleep, had the same problem n the zx, never on the KLR, no biggy personal egros thing
seat is ok comfy but I get tired of my nuts on the tank.
What I find inexcusable are the headlights, for the love of god what happened? They put about as much light on the road as my 82 Virago did and the high beams are damned near as useless, good for lighting up tree tops though.
Touchy throttle, Took some getting used to but it was concerning with my gurl on the back, she really holds on tight.
Overall I like it, not blown away as with my test ride nor do I feel it's thousands better than the KLR, probsbly how I would feel with any ADV bike but I like it.
