Re: What do gowe now think of the bike

My expectations were probably on the low side - my last ride was a 79 G model Kawasaki. It was slow, didn't handle very well, had a weak electrical system, had to be kick started, had crappy brakes, parts became an issue along with finding someone to wrench it...etc.

I had ridden friends' bikes; Harleys, Ducatis (Monster and a Multistrada), a Ulysses, a WeeStrom, and a handful of sport bikes.

Most of them were cool but I wanted a 'do it all bike' that I didn't need to worry so much about maintenance wise. I was actually looking at a KLR NE and a Suzuki DR650 (I want to go places, off road included). My options were expanded by the test rides at the dealer.
I rode a DR650 (still want one and will put one in the stable), both V-Stroms, a Versys, and finally my Tenere.

When you come from a bike like my previous MC you realize there really are no bad new bikes. In fact most bikes are really, really good comparatively speaking. I felt like the Super Tenere rose above the rest for me.
Did a little research and liked what I saw. The dealer gave me a number - OEM crash bar, side cases, 'skid plate (gravel deflector really), a maintenance package and YES - all for less $$ than the KTM 1190 sitting next to it on the showroom floor. By about $3K.

IMO it handles tremendously well, brakes very well, has the electronics package that will help keep me upright in bad situations, has a powerhouse of a motor, feels lighter then it is, can carry me and a bunch of sh!t or me and the wife or one of my daughters and a bunch of sh!t AND...AND I can do it off road when properly equipped and with a decent rider. (who isn't me yet but I have plans to get trained and get practiced)

Oh, and I saw a pic of someone doing a track day on Super T on another forum. I love that ::012::

And it's a Yamaha so I know it probably overbuilt and rugged.

I really like my bike. Seriously

Joined up a couple months ago. Bought a 2013 shortly after and I now have over 3k miles on it.

It has surpassed my expectations in several ways and I believe I am going to be very happy with this bike.
I did recently have the ECU re-flashed which I am finding to be one of the best return on investments I have ever put into a "modification" or accessory.

Over the winter I will add some protection and a PC-8 but otherwise I see no reason to do anything but ride it, change the oil when called for and tires if I need 'em.

Welcome aboard stoned! MANY of us have done just what you did! Oil, gas, and tires. I really have done nothing on mine for 30k miles. I really should freshen up the fork oil, radiator fluid, and break fluid. Maybe before my next long trip...maybe! Or ill just keep riding it ::001::

I have owned more than a couple bikes 54 years old and have had a bike of some brand or another since I started riding at 16 I have to say I've used up more tires on this bike than any other I've owned I think that sums up how much I like it

I went from the old tenere to the new 2014 model and it was a lot better than I thought it was going to be . Yes there are only a few new mods , but the difference is like chalk & cheese ....

little over 8k miles so far and have done some handlebar risers, crash bars, grips, seat modifications at the upholstery shop, airhawk and engine skid plate. 5th gear is getting quieter and the rear oe exp' has about 2/32"-3/32" left, the trail wings are going on soon. Enjoying this cycle.

I refuse to play the brand game, whatever brand a bike is and whatever type so long as they want to ride, and they enjoy it, that is all that matters in the end.

I really really miss my KLR, I cannot explain it, just loved that bike even though this one is ten times the bike the KLR ever wanted to be.

Good luck with your new ride, what a upgrade from a 79P

I can agree. I am on my second S10 and love them both, but still miss my 08 KLR, even though, as you say the S10 is ten times the bike. Perhaps that is because the KLR NEEDED me, but the S10's couldn't care less. ;D

Something I noticed the other day which I've never seen on a bike I've owned. The speedometer is almost dead on! At 75mph it was off 1mph from my GPS which is ~1% difference and about what you see with most cars. I've had bikes that were off as much as 10%. It's going to be nice to not have to do math to figure out how fast I'm actually going vs indicated.

That is another of the many upgrades Yamaha made with the 14 model. The previous models were off quite a bit.

LOVE THE BIKE. coming from a 07 bmw r1200gs, i find the bike a pleasure to ride, yes suspension on the gs was plush, but I became tired of being so dependant of the bmw dealer.

all of my buddies ride sport bikes, and we love the twisties, for my riding level its much more capable than I am.

if you ever ride to central mexico, you are welcome to drop by.

Got mine on Sunday, a 14 non in grey. It runs great but will need seat mods quickly. Did 150 yesterday and my butt was done. Got the yamy wings coming but think I'll be getting a new windscreen also. Used the tour mod on Sunday, yesterday switched to sport mode and to me it is so much better. Thanks to the guys who recommended romney cycles in WV. Great deal and nice people. Now does anyone know the mm of the spokes? Want to buy a spoke wrench.

5mm ball wrench. Best bet is the longest 5mm ball wrench socket you can find.(Harbour Freight/Princess Auto) That way you can reach and tighten with a ratchet and a small extension. You won't be able to do it with an allen wrench alone. Once you snug up any loose ones at 1000 miles, you probably won't to need to check them again for a while. I just use the screw driver ping test. Never had any problems.

Hey Guys,

First time post. I am a little disappointed in the power and engine shudder at about 3200-3700Rpm, however I am still in break in period (only 150 miles). Hopefully this will improve with time. And from what I read on this very helpful forum there are solutions to each problem. On the good side the bike is super comfy (6 3" and 270).

You won't believe how much this motor changes over the first 4000-6000 miles.
And that's far from an opinion of just mine.
You'll see.
