Re: 2 types of yamalube for final drive - which one do I use?

That is what most of us would do but that is not what they are concerned with. They want to know what Yamalube product is correct. I am going to ask the parts manager I buy from. He has been doing Yamaha parts for 35+ years.
Agreed. Why are so many saying here that Yamaha specifies 80w90? My owner's manual clearly states straight 80 weight. So far as I can see there is no such thing from Yamaha, or elsewhere.
For me the relevance of the question is warranty protection. Although any brand hypoid GL-4 or GL-5 will meet the warranty requirements, it is not clear you can change weights from what Yamaha specify, and they have made a hash of it by:
1. Specifying a grade that is apparently unobtainable,
2. Failing to label their own products properly with weight and api specifications.
3. Marketing similar products on a model specific manner and then failing to specify clearly which we should use.
I am in complete agreement that in so far as lubricating the final drive pretty much any oil in the general weight range and correct api spec will work fine.
