Got the yamalube SAE80W90 drive shaft gear oil from dealer today. they were not sure if this is the correct oil for the shaft drive. Can you guys confirm that this is correct. it does not have any of the other numbers printed on it as what the user manual states. I see on the yamaha website there is also friction modified shaft drive gear oil 80W90 I a not sure which one to use?

Either one is probably fine. I'm sure the Friction Modified stuff is more expensive. How deep are your pockets. :D :D

All my dealer had on the shelf at the time was the friction modified formula. It states on the bottle it can be used in regular final drive applications.
I don't remember the exact cost but it was no more than a quart of yamalube dino oil.

Any brand gl4 or gl5 80/90w oil is fine. I happened to pick up the bel-ray stuff, been using the same in the FJR for 45,000 miles.

Re: 2 types of yamalube for final drive - which one do I use?

I just changed the final drive with Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube LS 75W-90. Did not trust the Yamaha 80w90. Why I did not trust the Yamaha stuff, not sure maybe it was the lack of documentation. The Mobil 1 stuff is documented, tested, on various websites around the web, and used in very harsh heavy duty applications such as work pickups, and high performeance cars. I'm not a mobil employee. If I could access it I would be using a Amsoil products. :) also the mobil 1 stuff as friction modifiers

Just purchased some Yamalube Shaft Drive Oil Exclusive from my dealer. The bottle indicates "exclusively for FJR1300 and VMAX 1700" and for "most severe conditions", but I am worried now that it may not be the correct weight as the dealer could not verify. Am I reading too much into this? Thanks for the help...

This sounds like the expensive synthetic lube that is supposedly superior to the regular GL5 stuff Yamaha sells. I recall some arguing on the FJR forums whether this more expensive stuff was required or just recommended. My take is that either would work fine in the FJR and since the S10 specs basically the same gear oil, I don't see any reason it wouldn't work fine in the S10.

And doesn't it say GL5 and the weight on the bottle? If it's GL4/GL5 and close to the spec'ed weight (80W-90) it is acceptable to Yamaha. As to what is "optimal" or "cost effective", I'll let others carry on about this.

You are not alone. Looks like there is a lot of discussion and information.

That is what most of us would do but that is not what they are concerned with. They want to know what Yamalube product is correct. I am going to ask the parts manager I buy from. He has been doing Yamaha parts for 35+ years.

Agreed. Why are so many saying here that Yamaha specifies 80w90? My owner's manual clearly states straight 80 weight. So far as I can see there is no such thing from Yamaha, or elsewhere.

For me the relevance of the question is warranty protection. Although any brand hypoid GL-4 or GL-5 will meet the warranty requirements, it is not clear you can change weights from what Yamaha specify, and they have made a hash of it by:

1. Specifying a grade that is apparently unobtainable,
2. Failing to label their own products properly with weight and api specifications.
3. Marketing similar products on a model specific manner and then failing to specify clearly which we should use.

I am in complete agreement that in so far as lubricating the final drive pretty much any oil in the general weight range and correct api spec will work fine.

Re: 2 types of yamalube for final drive - which one do I use?

My dealer didn't have any of the Yamalube gear oil in stock, so I bought the Honda gear oil that's recommended for the GW, ST and their shaft drive cruisers. That was good enough for me.

They did have Amsoil 75W-90 synthetic gear oil, so I bought a quart of that for future use when I go to synthetic.

BTW, I check the oil level in the engine, final drive and visually look at the FD and rear wheel area frequently, just for peace of mind.

Just got 600 mile service done at dealer. They used Yamaha Hypoid GL-5, according to the checklist.

I couldn't find the Yamaha product so I used Spectro Golden SAE 80/90 GL5 Hypoid Gear Oil. $10 for a Liter good for 5 changes. Why skimp?

The Yamaha product is expensive and I'm another that has used Mobil1 for years in the FJR. I remember the emotional "whale jizz" debates that MarkJenn alluded to.

What I wanted to add to the OP is that if your dealer carries multiple brands, it's worth asking the service manager what they use. I've found that a number of dealers are happy to sell the Yamaha product over the parts counter to you, but in the back service department they use an equivalent.

You know, you're right. I thought the spec was 80W-90 because I recall this from the FJR and it was what the common Yamalube stuff was, but the OM clearly says straight 80W. But, as you say, it's not available from Yamaha and most of the commercially available stuff is either 75W-90 or 80W-90. Personally, I wouldn't worry about using any of them, Yamalube or aftermarket. I generally use the Mobil 1 stuff.

As a background observation, you do want to take these Mother Ship instructions and specs with some common sense. The people who write the OM's are generally not riders and sometimes you just have to shake your head and wonder what they're thinking. For example, by Yamaha's "letter of the law" you are supposed to check the engine oil level "before every ride" and the check procedure in the manual requires you to: 1) start with a cold engine; 2) and let it warm up for 10 minutes until it hits an exact temperature; and 3) wait another few minutes until the oil settles before checking it. I doubt many of us are going to add fifteen minutes of this check procedure before every ride, or worse, wait hours at fuel stops for the bike to cool down enough to do this process. Not to mention the fuel use and engine wear/tear of 10 minutes of idling on every ride.
