Re: 2 types of yamalube for final drive - which one do I use?

I have been in a delima over the past week as to proper rear diff fluid also. This forum recommending

Yamalube Friction-Modified Shaft Drive Gear Lube - part # ACC-SHAFT-LU-00

Yamaha Dealer recomending

The FJR final drive oil

Owners manual recommending any

80W gl4 or gl5

I called Yamaha customer assistance also

The guy indicated both the above oils are the same with the friction modifiers

I ended up using the FJR final drive oil for my 600 mile service.

I did find some fuzz on the magneet and was properly filled from the factory thank goodness. I hope this helps as I was not sure either.

Was funny the guy at Yamaha said to throw out anything from the internet and 5 minutes later quoting me the same part number listed on this forum. Woot I chuckled at that thanks guys.

My Yamaha dealer mechanic, who also owns a Tenere and who is an avid biker, says to use the stuff recommended for the FJR final drive. So I will. I trust him. R

Just purchased some Yamalube Shaft Drive Oil Exclusive from my dealer. The bottle indicates "exclusively for FJR1300 and VMAX 1700" and for "most severe conditions", but I am worried now that it may not be the correct weight as the dealer could not verify. Am I reading too much into this? Thanks for the help...
I got a second opinion from another dealer about this Yamalube "Shaft Drive Oil Exclusive" and they said it was overkill (good stuff). Hope it's not synthetic as someone here suggested? Anyway I had already purchased it so I used it and so far I haven't fried anything!

Re: Differential Oil

I'm gonna stick with the high tech, fancy schmancy, super duper, party pooper Yamaha stuff the mechanic recommended, at least until the 3 year extended warranty is off. Then we'll see. I knew you'd want to know that. R

Yamalube Shaft Drive Oil Exclusive.
I checked my receipt from the 600 mi service and it looks like the dealer used regular Yamalube Friction Modified Gear Oil, not the "exclusive" (and expensive) one. After I read that the V-Max, FJR and S10 all share the same shaft I am wondering if I should replace the oil with the "exclusive" type. Any ideas?

The exact same thing happend to me. Maybe an overreaction but I did not trust it so I changed it myself and put in the exclusive. Yes it's pricey but it's not like I'm replacing it every month so I went for it to have peace of mind since it's a new bike. I also noticed that the dealer did not use the correct washers for all the drain plugs, since this was a mistake as well it did not help with the trust factor. I ended up just doing a complete re-service myself.

I have been using the friction modified stuff for 5400 miles without any issues and will continue to use it. I see no problem with it. Mine has been changed twice in that mileage. Came out looking pretty good.
