I checked my receipt from the 600 mi service and it looks like the dealer used regular Yamalube Friction Modified Gear Oil, not the "exclusive" (and expensive) one. After I read that the V-Max, FJR and S10 all share the same shaft I am wondering if I should replace the oil with the "exclusive" type. Any ideas?
First, most don't think the FJR "requires" the expensive stuff. At best, Yamaha recommends it, but the requirement is simply GL-4/GL-5. (Don't know about the V-Max.)

Second, while I think someone said that the driveshaft is the same between the the S10, FJR, and V-Max, I wouldn't necessarily construe that to mean the entire final drive is the same. I honestly don't know the exact differences, but the S10 certainly has a different external appearance. And the gear oil lubricates the gears in the final drive pumpkin, not the shaft so the drive shaft being identical really doesn't say too much about lubrication requirements. (The shaft rotates in a dry environment.)

I wouldn't over-worry this. Yamaha says you need to use 80W GL-4 or GL-5 and it appears your dealer used oil that meets this spec. So there is no problem with what is in there. If you want to put a more expensive (and presumably marginally better) lubricant in there go ahead, but it is not necessary at all. Personally, I'd let it ride and decide about the more expensive stuff at the next oil change.

Re: Differential Oil

This subject got beaten up a lot on the FJR forums. The FJR specific stuff, (Norwegian monkey jizz), runs a bit warmer than the Mobil One. I got a good deal on the Yamaha stuff long ago and it only takes 1/2 a pint on the FJR, so just used that until recently. No issues. You can tell that the diff is cooler with the Mobil One synth though. I changed the diff fluid on the S10 and FJR the other week and just used the Mobil One. Heck of a lot cheaper and running cooler seems good, plus, as Mark said, it meets the requirements. I wouldn't worry about what the dealer put in, just change it out for what you want next time.

If it were THAT easy, everyone would have one in the closet. :)) Why did you think the special Yamaha diff fluid cost so much? It's a hard job for some unlucky corporate office geek that screwed up to go around collecting all the Norwegian monkey jizz so they can bottle it up and sell it for $28/pint.

Re: Differential Oil

Thanks for all the replies! I won't worry about replacing the oil used by the Yamaha service shop as part of the 600 mi service. As some of you pointed out (and I double checked ::)), the service manual doesn't mention the "exclusive" oil anywhere. And I have no reason to believe the service shop messed something up. The dealership has been around for over 30 years and their senior tech had been with them for over 13 years.

When it's time to change the gear oil again I will probably go with the Mobil 1 oil so many are using.

Re: Differential Oil

Howdy,
Just one more thought, if you are using a GL4 rated gear oil make sure the can says hypoid on it. It does make a difference.

Friction modified, not worried. Had it at the shop, and it isn't like we have stuff dying because of it.

Mobil 1 user here, too.

And one of the all too often overlooked advantages of it is that you can get it just about anywhere, even on a Sunday.

That's the main reason I use Mobil 1 synthetic motorsicle oil in the engine/gearbox, too. ::008::

Hell, Amazon will drop Mobil 1 products on your doorstep with two-day free shipping if you're a "Prime" member, and the price is usually cheaper than at auto parts stores or even Wally World. :D

Mobil 1 LS 75W-90 is what you what. Available all-over. The LS means that it is approved for vehicles with a Limited Slip diff.

Re: Final gear oil brand

I use Mobil 1 75-90 LS no problems after 11k miles

It has all the requirements the dealer wants, you should be in the clear for warranty.

As others above have mentioned, I too use Mobil 1 75w90 LS synthetic, and no leaks after over 35,000 miles. I did start with Yamalube's gear oil until around 6,000 miles (IIRC), then made the switch. I always tend to start with OEM lubes for the first few thousand miles, then switch to Mobil 1 lubes.

As for the dealer... No, he should not give you any trouble if a seal needs to be replaced under warranty, and for a couple of reasons. One, Mobil 1 gear lube meets or exceeds the lubrication specs as shown in both the owners and service manual. As long as you are using lubricants that meet or exceed the manufacturer's recommendations there shouldn't be any issue.

Second, you are protected, by law, by the Magnuson-Moss Act (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnuson%E2%80%93Moss_Warranty_Act, http://www.mlmlaw.com/library/guides/ftc/warranties/undermag.htm, and http://lmgtfy.com/?q=magnuson+moss+warranty+act for more info). Under Magnuson-Moss it is the responsibility of the manufacturer to prove that your use of the lubricant in question was directly responsible for any damage or failure, and again, since Mobil 1's products meet or exceed the manufacturer's written recommendations, etc. it would be hard for them to prove that the use of Mobil 1 gear lube would have caused a final drive seal failure any sooner than the use of Yamalube's own branded products. Remember, Yamaha does not manufacture Yamalube products, but instead farms those out to lubrication producers around the world... In fact, some Yamalube lubricants may have similar or identical labels and descriptions, yet be made by entirely different oil producers and have completely different chemical make-up from country to country.

Don't let your use of Mobil 1 worry you in the slightest. In fact, I doubt the dealer will even ask you, and if he does the instant you say "Mobil 1" any other discussion of lubricant will cease.

Hope this helps!

Re: Final gear oil brand

I have found that if you have a seal that has a tendency to leak, synthetic oils will leak past the seal easier than Dyno oil.

You may have 'found' that, but the reality is that is 100% false. Synthetic has no more tendency to leak than any other oil. No bull, just fact.
