Hi,
I have successfully used a Mann MW64/1 filter. There is also a MW64 variant that looks even more like the oem filter.

MW64/1: https://catalog.mann-filter.com/EU/eng/catalog/MANN-FILTER%20Katalog%20Europa/Oil%20Filter/MW%2064~1

MW64 :

So far it has not leaked.

RockAuto has the MAHLE OC-575 for $4.59 a pop. http://www.rockauto.com/en/parts/mahle+/+clevite,OC575,oil+filter,5340
I have never looked back since, our plugs are the best prices as well..
I appreciate the heads up on this filter. I added it to my filter list, and I think I'll give it a try on my next oil change. Way better price than the Mobil M1-108 (they run about 15 bucks at O'Reilly Auto). Might be worth it to just buy a case of them.

Was it decided if these fit under the skid plates?
They are the exact same height as the OEM Yamaha filter so yes they will fit under all skid plates. I have switched over to the Mahle filter and it fits great under the SW Motech skid plate. This new price at rockauto is awesome. I paid about $7 a filter with free shipping on Ebay but with rock auto's lower initial price and discount codes, they are even cheaper than ebay now. I would stock up and buy a bunch at that price!

I haven't seen a discount code from RA yet. I bought many filter and car parts from them.

I spoke with representatives of three oil filters at the AIMExpo out of curiosity about the change from concave to convex bottoms. What I heard was that one company makes the base plates for a number of filter companies. They'd had some complaints about how hard it was to get filters to thread on some cars, where the filter is hard to get to. Their answer was to change to the convex (sticking out) style because it makes it easier to get the first thread on. What they had not counted on were other users where the little change can affect sealing - like us!!!

Apparently, some of the filter makers have insisted that the vendor return to the concave bases, which just muddies the water even more. Hopefully over time the filter companies will settle on one or the other design and the currently mixed stock will be cleared out. In the meantime, if your favorite brand didn't go to the convex you should be fine.

A little off topic but filter-related: I ordered an original Yamalube filter and they shipped a -70 instead of the spec'd -50 ( and now apparently -60) filter.
They look identical, except the -70 is about 1/4" longer. Can I use the filter if it fits in my Hepco Becker skidplate? Anybody used one?
Anyway - the vendor immediately shipped the correct filter without wanting this one back, so I don't have to use it, but why not, if possible.

Dealers commonly install different lengths than spec'd, depending on what Yamaha filters they have in stock. It's a 20mm thread. If it fits with your skid plate, go ahead and use it. The internal specs, pressure relief, flow, etc will be either identical or so close as to make no difference. Remember, they use the same filters on watercraft, snow machines and bikes, so it's not like the exact filter is spec'd just for the Super Tenere.

Just be super careful about what Eric mentioned regarding contact with the skid plate. Some plates cut it really tight and longer filters will rub on them.

Again I can't emphasize enough about Rockauto and the MAHLE OC-575 for $4.73 a pop.>>

And with the discount link> https://www.retailmenot.com/view/rockauto.com
The Tenere spark plugs have been the lowest priced as well at RA..

I have never looked back since.
I have gone through almost a dozen of these my friend on his 1800 Gold wing does 6 to 8 k road tours twice a year on them.
They work.
Forgot about that discount link, I just ordered $118.00 of Ford Ranger parts from them.. ::010::

I was just kidding because the oil filter got you to their site and then they got a bigger sale to you.

I've been using the Wix 51358 for ever and it has always been perfect. And it is always in stock at O'Reilly's Auto.
For me: Napa Gold 1358 made by WIX. Half price during twice a year sale. Never an issue.

I bought a Napa gold 1358 just for the purpose of cutting it open and inspecting it. It is a well made filter and fits behind the skid plate but the filter element is tiny compared to OEM or the Mahle OC-575. I am not saying it doesn't work or having a small element is necessarily bad but it certainly isn't good either. A smaller filter element has less surface area, which gives less capacity to hold contamination.
