For what it's worth, the Purolator 14612 used to be shorter, more like 2.5". All of the short filters have gone away except the Mobil One M1-108 and most are now 2.9 to 3" which is longer than the oem filter's 2.625" and too long for some skid plates, Rumbux and apparently AltRider to name two.

I have a contact with a Denso distributor, but have not had any luck lining up a bulk purchase for the non-Yamaha version of the Denso part number on the Yamaha oem filter. I will try again and post if I can source any and pass on the info and possibly a case price discount. Failing that, I may try and find a distributor for the Mobil One filters and see what quantity they require for a discount.

Now I posted this last year and nobody showed any interest, you may now! :-*

MAHLE OC 575 Oil Filters for motorcycles Rock auto has them for $5.00>>>> Go to this link http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecatalog.php?carcode=3304285&tab=motorcycle&parttype=5340

Just paid $17.52 for the two shipped, Amazon has 5 star reviews and sells them for $10.00 each.
Spec's say it's 3" long but I don't have a skid plate at this time, so until something comes along before i get one I will try these.

They have a Concave fitting.

When you get them in, please post the actual length. Mahle appears to manufacturer these themselves and is a big player in the EU market. Large distribution network, but if the filter is really 3" long, it won't meet my needs for a shorter filter to play well with skid plates.

Mahle is OEM for BMW cars. I have bought them for my BMW....cars that is. I do own a Tenere. This is good info here, thanks to all. I am so bummed about the Purolators. They will lose sales as this info gets out. Going now to check the few I bought recently.

Ok, bought these at Kmart 2-3 monts ago. All 3 appear to be the new design :'(. I don't do Facebook but, those of you who do, tell Purolator they ruined a good thing.

Then at 2:00am I was doing some research and found the old standard Emgo filter suppose to be 2.5" long.
I used these on my Kawasaki ZRX 1200 and 990 Triumph Tiger, not this particular model.
But these are for the Tenere>>>> http://flymotorsports.com/emgo-oil-filter-honda-10-82240/

From what I remember reading in the past they are made by HiFlo, HiFlo makes K&N oil filters as well.

I opened the two Bosch D3300 DistancePlus purchase at Wal-Mart and they have not changed design. They are sold/stocked in the motorcycle filter area. So, like I said previously, there is actually a difference between the Bosch 3300 filter (black in color) and the 3300 DP (blue in color). I was angry about the NAPA filter and just pitched it so I don't have number, but it was a WIX.

The Mahle's arrived today, they are 2.5" Convex same size as the Yamaha filters and have a hefty weight to them..
I think these are the winning filter for the price.

LOL, My '77 Webster's says: con-cave, adj, hollowed or rounded inwards. con-vex, adj, rounded like the exterior of a sphere, arched up. So, concave is good, clears the bits sticking out from the motor. Convex is bad, metal to metal contact bottoms out before the seal can do it's job. I was getting confused.

I guess I'll find out. I need to pick up a filter tomorrow for my 5k mile change before the Minuteman rally this weekend. Hopefully I can easily find a concave filter.

Thanks guys! I was experiencing this issue and finding this thread helped me realize why my filter was leaking, I didn't even realize the change in the filters until I saw the picture and then it made sense - I noticed the packaging changed but I didn't pay attention to the base and threads. I crushed a filter trying to tighten it so it wouldn't leak. How unbelievably stupid it is that they would make such a change without any notice. I'm pissed because I really liked the Bosch filters. I purchased an OEM one just so I could stop my bike from leaking for now.

I had warned the part's store manager that they may get some complaints. I was in recently and was right. LOTS of people and shops have been returning filters and complaining about leaks, even on cars, because of the new filter design. So...why did they do this, and with the issues, are they going to ever revert to the old design? I'm do for another change. I'm glad I bought a couple last time, if I can find the concave again, I'll buy several.

I have been using a Bosch 3300 filter for several oil changes. Cold one today when I changed my oil and when I put my SW-Motech plate back on the front of the skid plate contacted the oil filter Previously I would have a few millimeters clearance Looks like this filter is longer now as well Guess I will get another brand in a shorter filter and try to elevate the front enough where I can just replace the filter without losing all of the oil

No need to elevate the front of the bike. The oil level is below the filter. Yes, you will lose a small amount, mostly what's in the filter since they have an anti-drain back device. Fill the new filter on the bench a couple of times, letting it absorb that oil, before you swap and your oil loss in volume will be minimal.

I wonder if that 3300 could be one of the ones that changed their base shape. Contacting metal on metal would essentially make the filter longer because the seal didn't compress.

y
The base was still concave and the gasket made good contact. Simply appears that the canister is larger overall then watch previous models were
