Guys thanks for the kind words and prayers for my wife. It is truly amazing how many people are effected by this terrible condition.
We are both so thankful to live near Cleveland Clinic for her health care. The doctors and nurses have been so kind, professional and gone above the call of duty to heal and make her comfortable.
She is still healing from the effects of the treatment and will need about a year to get to her new normal. She is tuff person and has not complained and felt sorry for herself during this entire ordeal. It has made both of us look at life differently hence getting the RT for confront and wind protection. Done the sport bikes, drag bike, adventure bike so ready to not push the safety margin as much and go for luxury.
Hoped the RT was the best choice for my needs but this might be a sign to rethink a Goldwing.

Ken, my prayers go out to you, your wife, and loved ones. Nine years ago I was treated for lower lounge cancer and beat the odds. Made me that think Billy Joel may have been right when he sang "only the good die young".

There are many great motorcycle out there and the Goldwing is one of them. You'd be hard pressed to find a bike with more comfortable pillion accommodations then a wing. The Triumph Trophy is also something you may want to consider, those triples are very nice and have a great voice. ::26::....

You may want to consider keeping the S10 a while longer till BMW get things sorted

Keep us in the loop here....

So sorry to hear about your wife, Kenbike. Best wishes to her for a speedy recovery. I lost both my parents to different cancers not that many years ago, and I, too, learned how wonderful so many folks in the medical field can be. They get a bad rap in the press, but it's amazing they can see what they do each day and yet still be so kind, caring, and dedicated. Thank goodness they were there to help my folks understand and get through their chemo and radiation. I can only hope that one day a cure is found for all the various "Big C's".

As for bikes... The Gold Wing is a perfect choice. It's arguably the most comfortable mount out there for two-up travel, is as reliable as a stone, and has amazing handling and performance for it's size. Their handling is so light and responsive it's often hard to believe you're on a bike that big. And the engine is sublime. Electric-motor smooth and just pure, linear thrust throughout the rev band. Feels, and sounds, almost like jet propulsion in a way. And like most Honda products, everything just flat *works*.

Again, best to you and your wife.

Once you go through the cancer dance you realize just how short life is and what's really important. Don't wait for the RT.

I going out of town Wednesday -Sunday with wife who has been healing from a round of chemo and radiation treatments for colon cancer.
Not going to worry about the deal, if when I back and they do not have a date for the fix I will think about killing the deal. I will get ride a Goldwing might even rent for the weekend. With her illness we are thinking of getting in a few road trips as soon as possible in case in 6 months they find another cancer. So a good bike for two up is important and I still want a bike that is fun. Was thinking the RT would fill the bill. Lots of great bikes and I am pretty open to any but cruisers.
Hope your wife makes a full recovery.

If you're primarily looking for a two-up tourer don't count out Harleys. The current touring bikes handle great and you won't find a more comfortable bike for a passenger. Why not take a test ride on the new LC Ultra? You might be pleasantly surprised...

Go back to pages 4-6 in this string, Graham. This has been the subject of some commentary already.

The new BMW RT has a recall and you cannot buy one from a dealer until they get a new rear shock for it. If you have a new 2014 RT you "best" see your dealer...soon!

Might want to at least read a few posts in a thread before responding with information that has been under discussion for quite some time.

Hello Kenbike, Hope she makes a full recovery, I have had the prostate cancer scare.
On a positive note I have own a 2008 RT and a slightly used 2001 Goldwing,,, I actually bought the RT before the used Wing. I road them both about 23 thousand miles,,, I did about 11,000 miles per year on each bike. I sold my RT with anticipaction of buying the BMW 1600 GTL. But after test ride in 2011 I didn't like the fly by wire throttle response and decided not to buy the BMW 1600GTL and went out and bought a used G WING
My wife loved both bikes as did I. I liked the luggage bags more on the BMW,, I had the extra large tail trunk,, Both engines are great,,,, BMW uses less gas, probable gets 7 miles per gallon better mileage in spirited driving,, The Gold Wing moves effortless but at speeds over 85mph substained the BMW is preferred. Brakes on BMW better maybe just because of lower weight.
Handlilng on both bikes are great, THE goldwing feel like it can be ridden like a sport bike all day long,,,, a person may be at the edge of Wing traction and probable wouldn't know it,,, The BMW is just as good and probable can go faster through corners but you get the feeling maybe you shouldn't.

The switches on GOLD Wing seem like too much as things have mordernized,,,, I rarely used most of them. So when it comes down to it,,,, My wife loved the Wings rear seat,,,, But never a problem with the BMW Seat,
If I was to buy again it would be a tough choice,,,, GOOD LUCK Currently I am moving towards Adventure riding

Good luck with whatever you decide to go with. There are a lot of choices to fit everyone's specific needs and desires.

I test rode an RT as well as the K1600. I am 6'2" and the 1600 fit me much better and the riding position is just about perfect. The Goldwing is a great bike for a passenger but not for a tall rider. I bought one last year as my wife has been riding with me a lot more lately and she loved it. The bike sits low to the ground and the handlebars seem designed for really short riders. It was so uncomfortable for me I could only last 45 minutes on it before I had to get off. It was the most uncomfortable bike I ever owned. I ended up selling after 3 months. It was a $3500 test ride.

I have yet had a test ride on a Wing, will also check out a FB6. The trusted Tenere is still in the garage so have not done anything yet!
Just ruling out options at this time.

FYI, here is what BMW is doing for 2014 RT-ESA owners affected by the recall. This whole situation is unfortunate, but I think BMW is being generous in their response.

Wow, Very Generous response. Hope the dealers acknowledge it. It's basically an "out" for any dissatified owners.

I wonder if they finally realize the dissatifaction of their owners with the realibility of their bikes. 8)

I can honestly say, I have stayed away from owning another BMW due the internet chatter about issues..... although mine did not have any serious issues with it for the entire time I owned it. Go figure.

I agree with BMAC threads opinion,, the taller you are the BMW is the more comfortable choice between and RT and a Wing. I would say 5' 10" would be perfect height for either bike,,,,, below 5' 9" and the WING is great,,, over 6' and BMW RT is easy to touch ground regardless of which seat and position it is in. I am under 5' 10" and enjoy both bikes but the Wing was easy to manage coming out of parking lots due to being able to get feet firmly on ground when needed,,, I lent my Wing to friend over 6' 2" and he was so squeezed in on Wing he said no way could he tour,,,, but there are aftermarket seats for Wing that cure that problem.

This stuff must be very, very serious...as in there have been serious injuries or deaths caused by a defect.

Maybe this will be a wake up call for BMW as to using their loyal owner base as Beta testers for their product...

The recall states, "This is a precautionary measure which BMW Motorrad is taking in the interests of customer safety based on a supplier report. To date, there have been no injuries related to this issue."

No injuries/deaths caused by this. There have been two reported instances of the issue surfacing, and both were in Europe.

Good to hear! Look at me playing the sensationalist after a couple of pops last night...
