Totally agree, go for a Liter...
1.2 liter is my favorite south of the border size. Nothing better than playing Edward Fortyhands with a couple Dos XX. Two 1.2L bottles for 50 pesos. That's only $1.15 USD per liter!!

I know pumps can be off, odometers can be off, and both can be off at the same time. I've kept track of my mpg since I bought the bike (2015), I also still have the data from my 2013 model.

2013: With 63 data fill ups: Average Fill up was at 196 miles, average gallons used to fill up was 4.39, average mpg was 44.7, using 6.08 gallons as the maximum capacity, the average distance I could go until I had 0.5 gallons left was 249 miles, and the average distance until completely empty would be 271miles (I never tested it).

2015: With 19 data fill ups: Average Fill up was at 197 miles (I'm pushing it 1 mile further than my 2013, I'm living on the edge :D, average gallons was 4.62 to fill up the bike, average mpg was 42.7 (getting less mpg than on the 2013 but I think when I had the 2013, I kept it in touring mode most of the time, now I keep it in Sport), using 6.08 gallons as the maximum capacity, the average distance I could go until I had 0.5 gallons left was 238 miles, and the average distance until completely empty would be 259 miles (I never tested it).

On my way home today I saw the low light warning at 207 miles (a little later than usual) and I pushed it a little further than I normally do; I put in only 4.899 gallons which got me to thinking. I know some of you have shown that you have put in more gallons than what is listed for the ST, I've never come close, unless I plug in the Imperial Gallon amount.

So on the 2015: The amount I put in using 5.06 imperial gallons as the maximum capacity, the average distance I could go until I had 0.5 gallons left would be 194.5 miles, and the average distance until completely empty would be 216 miles (I never tested it). In theory, this sounds about what I'm seeing on the road, around 195 miles the low light comes on, so I have either 1.03 gallons or 0.86 imperial gallons remaining.

By using gallons, I could go 259 miles until I'm stuck on the side of the road, if using imperial gallons, I could only go 216 miles. The most I've ever put in the 2015 model is 5.08 gallons, a far cry from using the 6.08 gallons, but a tad over the capacity if using 5.06 imperial gallons.

So I guess what I'm wondering, is how many gallons are you guys/gals putting in when you fill up, I'm not asking everyone to go run their tank empty for me, but is the tank in the USA a true gallon or imperial gallon?

I use the lower number of 5.9 for my max capacity. It's safe(er). I've put 5.9 in once, sweating bullets, let me tell you, middle of Nevada, 260-270 miles. I also figure a lower mpg in my math, to be safe, 40mpg. Makes 240 a pretty sure thing. A long while back, years even, we had a guy do a dry (literally) tank fill. It was a touch bellow the spec'd capacity. Then you come down to how much of the liquid is left when the pump starts pumping air. It seems for most it sucks air with one or two tenths remaining. Fuel gauge? Varies widely, some, through trial and error, have reengineered the float arm (Bent) so the light comes on real regular at a fixed number of units remaining. And how far up the fill neck do you fill to? Sheesh, capacities. Me, I don't care much when the last bar flashes, I know I can make 200 miles, that's all I care about. ::26::

I also ran my 2013 out of gas and coasted to a station. Mine held 5.8 too. I was standing on the pegs rocking it hard to keep it picking up fuel to make it. Got 35 mpg on that tank. I was riding solo doin about 75 mph most of that tank. Hammering on it pretty good. I had also just put a full exhaust and power commander on it. My overall mileage seems to have taken a 4-5mpg hit. Has anybody else had these results?

I've been averaging around 4.6 gallons at around 230 miles before it starts blinking on reserve on my 2015. Tells me I have a bit t go before I run dry.

So I have that going for me...which is nice.

I filled up yesterday after doing 365 km, 'F' indicator on for 30kms, only managed 20 liters!!! That's nearly 230 miles and only 20 liters. ::012::

My 48-50mpg is riding at around 60mph tops on secondary roads....when I hit highway speeds I notice the mpgs drop according to the computer. Haven't done enough highway miles to report on it but suspect it would definitely be in the low 40's if not lower.

Hi, new guy here with a new bike, '16 yellow. I took it a bit easy during break in but doing some hotrodding now that the oil is changed, 2000 kms on the bike and its 5 days old. I've been filling up only after the low fuel light comes on (lots of gas stations here in southern Ontario) and today put in 18.5 litres at 445 kms. Counter said 35 km. Average says 4.1 L/100 km, and that's what I calculate the rate too, so that part is accurate. About 58 mpUSg if I converted it right. If the tank really does hold 23 L like Yamaha says I should be able to go 540 kms which is easily 100 kms after the low fuel warning comes on. Bike says my range is 600 km when right full.

The tank overall is 23 L but you can't get that much in, even if you put an extra vent in the filler neck.
4.1L/100km is beyond what most folks get.

Ya, speed limits are low here, 80 kph max and penalties are high (loose your licence and impound the bike at 50 over) and I've been doing quite a bit of gravel running at even lower speeds. Fuel consumption will surely rise when I get it on the freeway, but that's not really what I bought the bike for.
Should I be punching a vent hole in the filler neck?

Up to you. Here's the thread about it.

Fuel capacity 2013 super

I only get 5 gallons usage out of my 6 gal tank before it goes empty. Approx. 190 miles to reserve and 30 on reserve. Does anyone else have same problem. Or Ian I having some restriction. I fill tank to the neck. Thanks

What do you mean by going empty? Quits running? I put in over 5 gallons pretty regularly. Or are you going by the gas gauge and the blinking lights? If you got 220 miles with five gallons used you got 44 mpg, not bad. At that rate you can reach 250-260 miles before needing to push the bike.

Dirty little secret, EVERY maker of Fuel Inject vehicles show empty long before they are. They do not want the injector pumps to run dry. The fuels conditions the gaskets while lubricating the pump and the injectors.

I am on my 5th FI car....they all had liar gas gauges
