I hate seeing that. Never like seeing any bike, especially a bike I'm riding, go down.

That said, it is also an unfortunate example of why I am so done riding The Dragon. Too many hazards on that road, including but not limited to, tractor trailers, cars crossing the line, bikes crossing the line, camera man distractions, vehicle operators of all types exceeding their their own abilities or the capability of their vehicle. You need too much faith in your fellow man to ride that road, faith which I no longer find within me.

Any chance you can post the link from advrider about this wreck

Don't know if this violates any forum rules, but it's an eye opener and should generate some discussion. There is some info from the rider over on ADVrider. He says he was not seriously injured. I won't repeat his posts...he should do that if he so chooses. My question is: Can someone identify the skid plate and bars?

That sucks!

I'm curious if his insurance saw this photo series if they would deny his claim since technically a modification he made to the bike "caused" the crash.

Duplicate thread.

Skidplate touches first, lifting the front wheel from shots 8 to 9.

Glad he is all right.

Crashing sucks. But I guess I see this a bit different.

And yes, I have those dangerous, should-be-outlawed, evil Rumbux floorboards.....oops I mean crash bars.

Dejavu, i have the same crash bars with jesse odysseys. I had the same crash in feb. Im actually still on crutches b/c i tore a ligament in my foot. When it happened i thought the jesse luggage hit first and caused my wreck since they stick out a lot, i never even thought about the crash bars hitting first but it makes more sense since it would be easier for the tires to lift if the crash bar touches first. Hmmmm, that's a little scary to think about. Its worth noting that when i rode solo i drove the bike like i drive my r1 and had no issues, it wasn't until i softened the suspension to my liking and added a passenger that i experienced my first get off ever. At least this explains what happened to me, i was starting to doubt myself because i didn't feel like i had done anything wrong.

Your Rumbux should bear the scars of scraping if the did indeed touch first and cause your crash. Did you check them?

Well, there's the dilemma with the s-10. It can't be both a fully protected trail bike and an aggressive road bike at the same time. The guy should have picked his poison. He's got at least 60lbs of extra shit on the bike, 70/30 tires, big ass Rumbux plate witch wasn't designed with roadracing in mind, saddlebags that would have been next, if the skid plate hadn't been first, or if the front tire didn't lose traction, and he's sitting bolt upright. So many wrongs, nevermind the camera man, which almost always adds a couple more degrees of lean angle. LOL

Good comments, we all have to decide on how we want to ride our bike and where. As with all things, there are compromises.

I hope my panniers don't get that close to the ground!
It appears the panniers also contributed to the accident. I wonder if it was just the skid plate that touched down, if he would have been able to save the bike.

So do I! I'll just keep a mental note to be careful when I'm doing extreme corners.

I'm glad Mike is OK. On ADV he said his gear saved him, but the bike is totalled.

A totaled bike by something meant to protect it. That blows.

Next time I fit my panniers, I am going to try a tilt test. I want to KNOW the pegs will be down first so I can ease up if things get dicey.

interesting shot sequence.
I'm glad the guy is ok. Never had a chance to ride the dragon, but from what I hear, I may give it a pass.
It's interesting the guy had mismatched tires. Front is a K60, rear is a shinko 705.
It allmost looks like the skid plate and bags hit at the same time. The trouble with the metal bags is that they are over square/rectangular, and that bottom right corner would cause me concern. My givi en45 didn't give me any grief in California, on some of the twistiest roads I have ever ridden, but then again, the bags don't stick out no where as much.
I did have a scary moment like that in montana, when I hit a frost heave mid corner leaned quite a bit over, and it contacted the alt rider skid plate. Luckily I had spare undies. ::014::

Well my insurance just went up ::010::

I have rode that area for over 20 years seen all sorts of crazy stuff more so in the last ten years when the internet exploded the place with Harley trains and inexperienced riders on all sorts of bikes. Not saying he did anything wrong other than in to hot, bikes over loaded and stuff started touching with end result a crash. I have railed through there on my Tenere with pegs dragging but hey thats not to hard to do on this thing. Bags on it I don't fly through there. I run Anakee II's and no grip issues. I have an Altrider skid plate and it will touch down at the rear mount on both sides which I am leary of. Again as mentioned earlier by someone else these are not road race bikes and stuff will touch and cause issues. Good thing for the rider he had gear on or it could have been much worse for him.

Nothing wrong with the Gap road other than it's not a race track, it has some strange road geometry and basically is a circus with all the inexperienced ones flying through there. Could have been much worse if someone would have been coming in the other direction. May have ended in a fatality.
