Re: H7 LED lights from Cyclops Adventure Sports

I've never messed with headlights on any bike I've had - are these plug and play?

After seeing the stock headlights as compared to my PIAA's they look yellow and weak, like Homer Simpson's dad :)

Yes, they are plug and play. Takes about 5-10 min to do both. (But the 1st time it took me 30 in the dark by only a flashlight)

Hmmmm...me thinks this is a good mod to do before I put in the cockpit shelf.

If you've followed this thread, the light covers don't fit when the lights are installed. He's working at designing a cover that does fit.

Re: H7 LED lights from Cyclops Adventure Sports

I managed to cobble together some covers that will help keep the crud out of the headlights.

Here's what I did: I used a hole saw to punch a big hole in the covers, then used a drum sander in my drill press to open remove the "cap" portion of the plastic. You could use a Dremel, a file or even a lathe to do the same. Hog away all of the cap, so all that's left of the original covers is the bayonet ring. Into the ring I squeezed a flexible vinyl cap (McMaster-Carr 40005K59) and adjusted it so it protrudes ~1/8" beyond LED fan. No need to trim or attach the vinyl cap; it will just flare-out and wedge itself to the ring. Punch a drain hole at the bottom to let any condensation out, then just twist it back in place. Works like a charm and only looks mildly crappy.

I just got an email from Darryl, at Cyclops, that they now have a kit out for the Tenere. It includes the bulbs and replacement light caps. I think the price was around $175 for the kit. It is a plug and play unit. It looks like a very sane way to get much more light without all the hassles of wiring up extra lights.
If any of you have this kit please comment on how well they work.

Ordered a kit yesterday. Hope to have them by the weekend. I'll try to get pictures of the install up. Can't wait to see the difference I've been reading about.
By the way... the folks at Cyclops are super nice.

That would be good to see (no pun intended). Am also considering a set of LEDs but not sure about the longevity of LEDs as main lighting......... ::017::

I met up with a BMW with the LED bulbs installed and he said they were HORRIBLE.
He installed them before his Alaska trip and can't wait to get home to take them out.
I wasn't impressed with them either. The light projected the "grid" headlight guard as well.
It was a flat panel with one big LED on each side is all. Not taking advantage of the full reflectors...
Hope ours are different !!!

All headlights will behave differently to different LED lights. With a standard H4 or H7 globe, the source of the light is always in the same place, and the globe contains it's own reflector so that the headlight designers can design a headlight reflectors to deal with the light. LED globes on the other hand, depending on the manufacturer, will have the LED light source at a different point, or at many different points, most probably without internal reflectors, so the way the light behaves inside the headlight may be very different to the OEM globe. Ideally, the LED globe would have a single light source in the same place as the OEM globe which it replaces.

Having said that, I'd be interested to hear what people have to say about any LED replacement globes, because one thing I love doing is riding at night time, and probably the weakest point about this bike is it's headlight.

I'm looking forward to a review of the Cyclops LED's. I am (or was) shopping for a set of PIAA LP 530's to mount as auxiliary lights (I don't think the OEM headlight is awful, but it could use some help). If these LED's get the job done, I'd gladly go this route, rather than mount additional lights. I'm looking for brightness and distance projected (but not expecting a pencil beam-style projection).

I'm curious what kind of draw LEDs of this kind put on the alternator and battery compared to the OEM illumathingers? I'd assume it's less, but I know with LEDs especially high intensity LEDs this is not always the case. Anyone know if and how much?

Will these fit the '14+ models?
Yes, as the light housing is the same as previous models, the only difference would be the windshield mount and the deflector below the headlight housing, nothing to do with the headlight itself, but with all things, check with the supplier for assurances, just to cover your rear.
