Can someone tell me where to find information on airbox mods?

I'm installing a Yoshimura exhaust, K&N Air Filter, Power Commander and I'm trying to figure out if I need to open up the airbox for more air flow.

Thanks!

Lots of talk, not a lot of pictures or info.

It really depends how you use the bike. Do you plan to ride in dusty conditions or ford oceans?

First of all, Welcome to the Forum.
I doubt you need to open up the airbox. It already has a pretty large opening and the engine can only draw in what it can. The K&N should take care of whatever gains you're trying to achieve. I don't think I've read anyone modding the Airbox here specifically.

Re: Airbox mods?

I was going to say; the bike is already lean, your air flow mods will make it leaner, the PC 5 will allow you to fatten things up nicely, no Dremel needed. A small note, Jaxon covered his airbox in heat reflective insulated aluminum film, got a much more stable temp in the air box. Engine heated intake air is not advantageous to playing with fuel trim.

Re: Airbox mods?

I do think this big twin could benefit from some larger air box volume. I have heard rumors of someone who made some significant mods and saw serious results. Again, just rumors.

Anyone saying this bike is lean from the factory needs to pay more attention to posted pcv maps. Almost all remove fuel at larger throttle openings.

About that rich condition.... Do you think that may there to help the motor run a bit cooler? I can't think of any other reason for Yamaha to do that.

Re: Airbox mods?

I opened up my air box and run a clutch mod jumper, PCV, arrow header, and Two Brothers slip on. I did the same type of cutting as Jaxon but did not install the smaller per filters on the bottom of the air box just left holes. Running a BMC filter vs K&N.
Bike runs great and has tons of bottom end power. Ken Wheeler of Wheeler cycle did my dyno tune. I feel you get the most out of a bike with dyno vs auto tune. You will end up with great air fuel numbers but that may not be max power.
Cut the box!

The K&N is good as long as you do not do all terrain in dusty environment. If you do, I would stick with the origin or chose the Uni (oiled foam) filter.

Now, an air filter very first job is to stop small particles to protect the engine. If you have less restricted filter, there are very good chances that it will let more dust go in or, if it have less filtration material, that it will clog more rapidly, which means you loose the advantage of less resistance... Follow me? :)

Purchased a K&N before searching discussions on this forum. Many opinions and I like that. Do a search and add them to your post.

I've used the K&N and BMC filters on previous bikes. I've always found the K&N to fit well and give no issues, the two times I've used BMC filters they didn't fit too well and needed a bit of trimming (Varadero & V-strom) to get them to seat properly. No experience of the DNA filters yet.

If you hate your bike, Buy a K&N, if you appreciate it, stick with OEM or an Uni, that simple.

Bloody hell! There must be quite a few XT1200Z owners who really hate their bike then? ::025::

I exclusively always went with BMC on my past bikes.
The frame is much more robust over the K&N and filter media looked like it was tighter but that is my opinion.
As far as protection now that I have a bike that I take off road, I stick with the Paper filter.
It may not breath as well but it will collect the fine Silica dust I live with in the South West.
