here are the install instructions for a purchased ABS off switch

seems like the one fuse is simply 'opened', which would then also disable traction control

I haven't installed it myself, as the ABS system is good enough for my riding

It's too bad these ABS discussions become so polarized. I like ABS and am glad the bike has it, but there are some situations where it is undesirable. Whether that is 0.01%, 1%, 5%, or 50% of the terrain you ride depends on where and how you ride and how good a dirt rider you are. One size doesn't fit all here.

For my riding, I'll want the ABS off when I'm creeping down some steep, snotty, muddy forest service road just after a thunderstorm has passed, just trying to control my speed and get to the bottom with the bike upright. That may be only 0.1% of my riding, but for that situation which I'll encounter every year or two, I want to turn ABS off. Perhaps I'll be able to get by with the centerstand trick, but I'd prefer a switch.

Most ABS systems have a cutoff speed (e.g., 5 mph) where they no longer are active. Has anyone noticed this on the bike and what speed it is set at?

Thank you, looks simple enough.

On mine it appeared to still be active at around 4-5 MPH.

I have read the same as Mark but as you say a few have mentioned that the ABS is still active.
I also remember someone saying that the rear can be locked at low speed if you push hard enough.
As I am just a lowly interweb reader regards the S10 I will leave it at that.

Wonder how the Ninja/S1000/Blade threads are going with a few more tricks thrown into the mix ???

Anybody venture a guess why pulling the starter solenoid fuse disables the ABS? And does it affect TC as well?

repost, earlier I indicated the canadian bikes could not shut off the ABS via the centre stand technique.

Last night I put bike on centre stand, started bike, engaged second gear, let clutch out and after about 25 seconds the TCS went off, ABS light on display iluminated and check engine light came on. Pushed bike off centre stand, check engine light went off and TCS was off and ABS off light remained illuminated. No need for ABS switch. I proceeded to go for a hooligan ride and LOVED it. On the way home on the highway turned key off then back on and all retruned to normal. Yes, probably could have stopped and turnied aff/on but not that smart.

Confirmed and verified on US bikes as well. ::015:: It felt right to hit then rear brake on gravel at 25 mph and feel it lock and go into a slide. Still going to do the switck.

Hmmmm... I tried it, didn't work. Maybe I didn't let it run long enough? The ABS light came, then went off again as soon as I put the bike in neutral (i.e. did not switch off). Will try again.

OK that worked - trick is to wait for 30 seconds or so. The ABS light flashes, then eventually stays lit, and wella! no ABS.

Had a bit of a moment later on though - parked the bike for 30mins, expecting the ABS light to reset after switching the ignition off. Started the bike, ABS light still on - hmmm now what?

Fortunately it went out after I started moving, and all is back to normal.

that's standard - ABS is only tested to be ON after bike has moved and all sensors have been tested

The first time I did it the ABS light, TC light and CEL all came on and stayed on, I had placed the bike in second and revved it for about 30 secs. Took it for a spin and it bucked and ran rough. Turned it off and took it for a spin and everything reset. The next time I set it on the center stand, put it in second and Idled it for 30 seconds. ABS light blinked and stayed on. Took it for a spin, perfect!

I've been searching through the forums, and I haven't found a place where I can order an ABS off switch and be assured it is a "plug and play" system. One reference shows the switch for a KTM, one just shows a page of installation instructions, but no way to buy it. Where can I get a ABS switch that doesn't require splicing? thanks

I still don't understand why you think you need one? I have done steep, rocky downhills with mine and the bike just stops. Period!

We had this discussion tens of times. Let's not do it again. Just because you don't need it in your type of riding doesn't mean everybody doesn't need it. I can guarantee you that I can find a situation where you wish you had an ABS off switch. Not a common situation, but a situation that if you ride an adventure bike long enough, you'll encounter, and when you do, you definitely want ABS off.

Not to mention that there are some who just prefer to ride a bike off-pavement with ABS off as a rule. Entirely their preference and perogative.

+1000 ::012::

it really gets to me when I ask a question and people suggest it's not a valid question - fark, if they don't know the answer, shut the fark up!

I asked about seat cushions (Airhawk) on the SA forum and this dufus replied that the bike doesn't need seat mods - I know my ass and my ass needs it!

Anyone got an answer to the above?

Does anyone have step by step instructions to install an ABS disconnect switch which doesnt create other issues? I've talked to some members who were working on this project (names not to be mentioned) and they said they have a disconnect switch, but it creates havoc with the speedo.

One of you electrically inclined individuals have got to have an answer for this.....PLEASE. I dont do electrics well...in fact I suck at it. Mechanical is no problem, but I have major brain farts with electrical stuff.

AFAIK the ABS switch, when activated, disables ABS, Traction control and Speedo, so it's not very elegant
