I am thinking about starting to offer flashing for Teneres. As some of you may know, I worked with Flash Tune to unlock the mystery of the Tenere ECU. I've been working for ~6 months on/off making a "flash" that I am pretty happy with and I wanted to make sure the process was reliable and risk free. I have now flashed my personal ECU over 2 dozen times with no issues.

I have flashed a few others and the reviews are quite positive, here is one from OKLRIDER:

"Skimming this thread, I came across an offer from ac (avc8130) in one of his posts that he'd be willing to flash others' ECMs as an experiment. He'd already developed what he thought was a pretty solid flash, and simply wanted opinions. After some emails back and forth, I took him up on it. ::008::

We talked back and forth about riding style, likes, dislikes, etc. A couple of shipping labels, a cardboard box, and a ride to the UPS Store later...it was off. I anxiously awaited the return of my black box, riding the wife's KLX250 in the interim. About a week or so later, it was back! Like a kid at Christmas I was into the package, and out to the garage. Reassembly, check. Ignition on, check. Starter, and it still runs...woohoo! :D My initial impressions after coming back on it from the KLX were words that would probably get me banned. ::26::

He ended up putting three different maps in; one for standard 'T', one for standard 'S', and one in experimental that we'll call '2S'. Right out of the box the difference was noticeable in both 'T' and 'S', but I quickly fell in love with '2S'. This extra map is accessed with the CJM. Had I known then what I know now, it'd probably be my 'S' map. ::024::

I've been running around with his flash for about 800mi now. 600 of that was on a road trip, the other 200 from commuting. I wanted to get a more solid and honest feel for it before posting an impulse "OMG! This is the best thing ever!" response. My main goal was throttle response, and boy did I get it with '2S'! It's like an on/off switch now. Daddy like! You can ride it like a hooligan. Guilty. Or you can cruise at 80 in high gear, and accelerate further with ease. It's hard to describe without being too dramatic. You really have to ride one to feel the difference. It's really amazing the difference a few 1s and 0s can make.

This is a small, one Tenere town, so I've got nothing to compare it to but memory....but wow...big difference over stock. Ac was/is a standup guy. Knows his stuff, and was cool enough to share knowledge to help promote this small market that we all ride in. Well worth the effort. ::008:: ::26:: ::001::"

I'm thinking of offering my flash service for $100 plus round trip shipping. I don't want to infringe on Chris' service at Flash Tune, and that is what he charges.

I can customize the flash quite a bit, offering different throttle maps (Both T and S modes) as well as different engine braking or timing. Fan temps are adjustable, and we can even setup a quick shifter!

For those with PCV's, I can attempt to write your fuel maps straight to the ECU.

Anyone interested?

ac

EDIT:

Pay attention to this thread! This is a fluid situation. The flash itself is evolving. The shipping/pricing/policies are evolving. I realize there are quite a few pages and many posts, if there is any question/confusion feel free to PM me.

Will you post your dyno results starting from 'stock'. I've had someone ask me what the differences are.

Don't have any. Simple as that. I am tuning the throttle maps. WOT is still WOT so I wouldn't assume much more peak power than stock. Instead, it is all about the response from the motor to the rider's wrist input.

I'm not sure what the person was asking you. The flash I have created is different from the flash that is supplied by Flash Tune and different from the ECU-U flash. It is a concoction I created all on my own.

I'm interested. I'm not too far from OKlr's one Tenere town and recently acquired a Tenere. Maybe I can give him something to compare to besides memory of stock bike.

I have ridden my flash back to back with stock, and so has SwampyVT (seldom on here) who is one of my buddies. The difference to stock is impressive.

My original intent was to offer the "CJM" without the crazy timing advance and silly timing restrictions in the midrange. That is pretty much what I run as my "T" mode. I then created a monster of a throttle map that is what OKL refers to as "2S" mode. I refined that map into what I like to run as "S" mode.

I've also played around with a quick shifter setup, and that is just too much fun for a 600lb ADV bike!

Re: Any Interest in a More Affordable Flash Option?

I'm interested. I plan to have something done after I replace my shock later this winter. I have been reading the other flash threads, but can you explain a bit about the difference between what you can do and AF-1, for example? I run my CJM 100% of the time, so would like something like that to be my T mode, then something more aggressive like you describe for the S mode.

Re: Any Interest in a More Affordable Flash Option?

AVC I am interested. I am in Philly / South Jersey.

I've been hesitant about the reflash as I am pretty darn happy with the bike in stock form. Not sure I need / want much more.

Mostly I am concerned about making the bike too explosive off road.

But sure would be fun to have more response available on the road.

Reply here or send me a PM to get something organized.

AF-1 uses the ECU-Unleashed flash. I have never ridden one of those, nor have I seen what is "inside" the ECU after they flash it.

I use Flash Tune to build and load my own custom flashes.

I cannot comment specifically about the difference between what I do and what AF-1 does, as I just don't know. I can compare to stock.

The CJM has an excellent result for the throttle, but does some undesirable things to the timing. I can give you all of the "good" without any of the "bad".

John,

That is one of the beauties of having multiple ride modes on the Tenere. We can leave one of the modes "stock" for you to use off road and only tinker with one of the other modes. What mode do you ride in off road, T?

AC,
Does your flash remove the off bottom stumble and also remove the HP restriction in the first 3 gears in both T & S

How does your flash compare to the clutch mod which makes "T" like the same as "S" mode

Bruce,

I am not 100% convinced that stumble is "flash" related. My bike had it when it was young. I synched the throttle bodies long before the flashes existed and the stumble was gone.

I CAN remove the HP restrictions in both T and S mode. The flash I ride, and I have done for a few others is generally the following:

I replace your stock "T" mode with an "unrestricted S mode". Basically the throttle is the same in all gears as it is in stock S mode in 4th gear. This is a very linear throttle with full throttle and HP available in all gears.

I replace your stock "S" mode with my custom concoction that is essentially a fast turn throttle. I theorize this is similar to what ECU-U has done from talking to others, but I don't know for certain.

I placed a "kernel" in the neutral location for OKLRider since he was insistent he wanted what I considered to be a crazy throttle map I made. Basically that map makes the S10 hit like a 125 2 stroke. He likes it. I found it tough to be smooth with the bike (smooth is fast).

All of this is "customizable". Each flash is custom for the customer and I save them by your name so I always have a backup. If you don't like it, or want something changed, cover shipping both ways and I will return it to stock or tweak a bit.

The clutch mod makes T and S mode identical...When a jumper is placed on the clutch switch the bike switches to "neutral" conditions. You are riding around with the bike thinking it has 0 load on the motor. Search for my CJM truth thread. The CJM "works", but is far form "ideal".

AC,
Sorry if this has been asked before, but does doing the flash upgrade void any warranty on the bike? I have the 4 year YES and wouldn't want to jeopardize it.

Brian,

I'm not a lawyer, I'd feel terrible if I gave you the wrong answer.

I can say this, I can return to stock if needed...

Would probably like to discuss with you a bit more.
At the moment I use T off road and am quite happy with it. I also use T a fair mount on road when riding two up and just motoring around.

Ideally I'd like the same T mode response in first and second gear with a slightly more aggressive T mode in gears 3 through 6.

For S mode we can go much more aggressive.

John,

I think we can figure something out you would be happy with. If you would like, come on up to my place one day and ride my bike. You can try out the three modes I have loaded into my bike back to back along with your bike and we can build you something that suits your needs.

Re: Any Interest in a More Affordable Flash Option?

I have full exhaust and PC-V with CJM, and to me output is smoother in T than S. Is it possible that it's a placebo effect, or could my '12 actually respond to T/S with CJM in place?

Placebo.

With the CJM in you have 1 throttle map and 1 timing map the bike is following. You've essentially bypassed the mode switch.
