I don't want to hijack this topic, but I'm shocked the the Trax guys even let that design leave the factory. They MUST know they leak, or else they are not testing at all. I'm not sure if they are claiming water tightness, but water tightness is an assumed thing for motorcycle luggage.
Hmmm......

Still waiting to hear from the Twisted Throttle guys on the crooked SW-Motech pannier racks they supplied for my Micatech panniers. I've heard nothing from Micatech! Mine are still crooked. They aren't going to fix themselves, guys! What say you TT, SW-Motech and Micatech????

Inquiring minds want to know!

There are two subjects in that short original post. One is about retention and the other about how solid the bags are.

In the FJR world, a number of owners decided to add pit pins after a few dropped a bag while riding and (sound familiar?) hit a bump. I don't have the Yamaha bags for the new bike and know the mounting is not really the same with the 3rd finger beneath, but maybe the thought should be re-examined here?

With respect to how solid the bags are when dropped at any speed, I wrote the article about the bike that did the high side and actually landed on the OEM bags, then pivoted on them, then slid off the road into rough stuff on them. Those bags took a heck of a beating and at least kept their contents. Plus, they maintained a survivable space for the rider's leg. To ME there are other negatives about the bags (volume, etc) but the bags appeared to be pretty damned stout. Obviously the original poster had a different experience.

And I agree about withholding the personal comments.

Let's regain some perspective here, shall we. The OP didn't have an issue with the Panniers. His problem was with the top box and I think he over-generalized out of emotion... no big deal. This isn't the first bike to have issues with top boxes flying off. If you wan't to go with quick mount top boxes, it's prudent to take a close look at how it mounts and possibly consider ways to ensure they stay on while going over rough surfaces. I think the side cases mount in a very sturdy manner, but the top box falls a bit short. I may end-up going with some sort of pin and clip arrangement to keep it on, should I choose to spring for one.

I'm not the most objective in the world when it comes to the S10, but it would be nice if we don't get overly emotional about negative critiques...lest we want start sounding like a bunch of Triumph riders ;)

Details and pics please.

I have 2200 miles "1/3 of it being gravel" on my full set of bags, all three are full of cloths and misc. at all times and I have no complaints.
Good to know KSH. I have the side cases waiting for me at the dealership. If I had not ordered them i would have bought the Jesse 9" Safari cases.

You list your super T as #27. What is the number before 27? I ask because I have 027.

If Jesse's would have been available when I ordered the bike I would have ordered them to.

I'm 49 state "027" your California "027" I bet.

What serial is your engine? Mine is 40

I have the three bag set up, had no problems "building" since i learned years ago to read the instructions before attempting anything (learned that from the wife) 2000 miles so far and a bunch of them with the three bags fitted off road and no problems, quality is on par with Givi plus they are even and dont look ugly!

not much room for ADV stickers of that's your cup of tea tho :D

Bloke I enjoyed our brief chat today wish I had more time though. Loved your comment on the jesse's and to be honest I didn't catch it at first like I should have being a former disgruntled exbuyer.

We hit big time rain less than 2 miles from the camper. So running off early kinda paid off.

I had the oem bags on all three at once loaded down heavy with no issues at all. I just did not like having to use a key to open them. They where tough and water tight.
I say had cause Scooper HAD TO HAVE a S10 and I was home working on the yard and my wife sold it.....

In fact I have a used set of bags mounts, and liners for sale. Scoop didn't want them.

Just wanted to let folks know that the factory top box and plastic garbage Yamaha calls luggage for the "around the world bike" will let you down.

I was riding a nice paved road with only a tool roll and my riding pants and coat liner in the top box when I hit a pot hole. I watched in my mirror the top box fly off the back and tumble down the road. Nice. After picking up my stuff and putting the box back together I noticed that the bottom of the box that holds the latch in place was completely missing and the box will sit on the rack but not stay. I guess I should have bought bungee cords to hold the luggage on. It was a long ride back home holding my box on.

I am talking to Yamaha about a warranty claim, but I also wanted everyone to know so they can carry bungees to hold on that expensive plastic luggage. BTW I ordered some trax luggage the day I saw this stuff but I have to wait for the back ordered mounts so I was using just the top box in the mean time.

Good luck

Keith

Just received mine today from the dealership. I have some bad news. After the recent posting about the OEM being junk. Like some of you I posted and wanted a response but instead I had to find out the hard way. Once I got all three boxes home. I thought to myself and take some pictures and do a how too. Well that quickly changed. As I assembled the first bag (Top) I closed the lid and pressed down, in which the instruction, video and everyone else who has these panniers have done. I did put a little oil on the key because, like other postings about the factory panniers the key, sticks a little. Well that’s when it happened. The key wasn’t coming out. It was stuck in the key whole. I turned the key to the left and the release handle opened up. But when I tried to turn the key back to the center. It was stuck. I tried to turn it left and right, and as soon as I put the key it, SNAP. The key was now in half. F*&%!!!!!!!!

I called my dealership and brought the top pannier back in. They quickly made me another key and made several more to try to open the pannier. Well they got the factory key out and then broke two new keys in the lock.
I did notice that the keys for the ignition, and everything else, are aluminum and the lock’s on the panniers are steel. So, with in a few frustrated twists, nap!

Well the parts manager came out and told me that they cannot get the pannier open and he finished his conversation on the phone with a yamaha supplier and
“Yamaha has been having problems with the panniers system. Thus, having Yamaha put on a video on the Super Tenere web page on Yamaha-motors.com. The pannier is covered under warranty and Yamaha would replace it. The supplier also said that the pannier system, will be changed at the end of this year and something new will come out of the S10 some time in 2012, because Yamaha knows there is a problem with the design”

So it comes down to me. If I want to keep the system or go to an alternative. Now I must inform you all that I put together both side panniers. Not a problem at all with the lock, key, or closing and opening the boxes or the release latches. So I did take a few photos. Personally, I think I just got a junk lock from the factory. I like the way the system works for easy on/off capabilities, like most of you, that why I bought it. I will put up some more info once, the part managers contacts me tomorrow.

Just curious, did you remove the little shipping screw in the back of the lock? I didn't understand the picture directions at first and didn't do this and it caused me some issues. I also have some catching of the lock on the top box but if I hold the lock cylinder with my finger I find the key comes out easier. Never mind if this is redundant.
