Yamaha Factory Luggage failure

Just wanted to let folks know that the factory top box and plastic garbage Yamaha calls luggage for the "around the world bike" will let you down.

I was riding a nice paved road with only a tool roll and my riding pants and coat liner in the top box when I hit a pot hole. I watched in my mirror the top box fly off the back and tumble down the road. Nice. After picking up my stuff and putting the box back together I noticed that the bottom of the box that holds the latch in place was completely missing and the box will sit on the rack but not stay. I guess I should have bought bungee cords to hold the luggage on. It was a long ride back home holding my box on.

I am talking to Yamaha about a warranty claim, but I also wanted everyone to know so they can carry bungees to hold on that expensive plastic luggage. BTW I ordered some trax luggage the day I saw this stuff but I have to wait for the back ordered mounts so I was using just the top box in the mean time.

Good luck

Rather than just saying the luggage sucks, it would be more helpful to know how it failed. What went missing and how did it come off? Is this a fastener issue or a structural failure issue?

Did the unit come loose/fall off due screws unthreading themselves, did it actually break, was there failure of the rivets.

More details please

Details and pics please.

I have 2200 miles "1/3 of it being gravel" on my full set of bags, all three are full of cloths and misc. at all times and I have no complaints.

I believe the first batch of rear rack/topcase mounts had an issue. Yamaha did a recall but maybe you got a faulty unit? Mine seems very secure but I will keep an eye on it. As others have posted, please post photos and/or details so we can be on the lookout for possible problems.

Thanks,

Tell us more about the "pot hole." So large you couldn't avoid it? Weren't paying attention? Was it more like a bomb crater? Going 100 mph? What?

Damn son, you come on here make a major complaint in your second ever post but then just leave us hanging on the details? Help us out a bit. Your experience is not the norm. I've done some off road with the bags, not the top box, and it all seems like very decent, pretty sturdy stuff. Not the biggest, probably not the toughest, but it looks like it'll do just fine for my intentions. And it's hangin' on just fine, no bungies.

Until you fill us in with some details, you just sound like a crank.

Guys,
The poster made the statement yesterday. Give him a chance to respond. Not everyone has the time to spend on the internet that you may have. Some might even have jobs (?)

Slamming him because of how you think he may ride, where he rides and what happened is only important if he has a chance to give the details. To descend into name calling after only 24 hours is definitely not how anyone here should act. I suggest that he may just decide to say to himself, "Screw these azzholes" I would.

If you want to keep members here and pick their brain, you need to show a little class and respect. There seems to be an increasing level of hostility here when someone says something the "group" doesn't like. It' getting a little ugly.

Have a little faith in your own good judgement, your cases are probably just fine.

I paraphrased you above but I think I captured your sentiment. So that's what you'd do if you got some push back from an outrageous, provocative statement like this:

..."the factory top box and plastic garbage Yamaha calls luggage for the 'around the world bike' will let you down."

when a member drops post #2 with a bomb like that, he should absolutely expect to be called out to provide details. That was not a cautious opening statement and no details were provided, just a bunch of carping.

Yes, the whole top latch/lock mechanism is a POS. In fact the whole thing is pretty cheap and flimsy and not worth the price Yamaha wants for it, especially if you have ever used Givi or Hepko Becker stuff before. Doesn't surprise me bit that someone had one fly off. Mine is jury rigged so I need to open the top and unlatch it from the base manually. Here is my post about it.

I guess it's only provocative if you have a horse in the race. I don't, but poor manners tend to provoke me.

That being said, can you provide any report, thread, post or other confirmation that the factory cases are something someone found to be rugged or durable? Something you would drag through the boonies? Most that I've seen over the last year and a half claim negative issues mostly with the locking system, and now fundamental structure problems could be showing up. If I'm not mistaken, there was also a recall or fix that had to be done to the rear rack. Mine appears to have some sort of steel afterthought applied to it.

In other words, while he may have succumbed to anger over his misfortune, is he wrong? If you think so, provide proof, otherwise, it's you who is carping.

I don't wish to disparage the cases, but it's not looking too good right now.

If you are looking for water tight/proof cases I would not go with Trax. I bought the new Evo Trax which they claimed was fixed from water leaks. They are not, I just sent my set back, the 37lt case leaked from the seams and top seal on the lid and the 45lt leaked at the seams. They look real nice but if you plan to put anything of value in them be careful.

I don't want to hijack this topic, but I'm shocked the the Trax guys even let that design leave the factory. They MUST know they leak, or else they are not testing at all. I'm not sure if they are claiming water tightness, but water tightness is an assumed thing for motorcycle luggage.

I just have the bags, no top box. I don't plan to put mine through severe abuse (too old) so I'll probably get along fine with mine. But that's one of the main reasons it'd be nice to know the details. In any case, if the stuff failed miserably like the op says, it'd be helpful to know if it was a really big pothole hit at speed or what. No worries, I have no horse in the race either, I just like categorical statements backed up. If the OEM trunk is crap, it's crap. But let's define the circumstances of the failure.

Right off of SW=motech website 2008 = Diverse new supplemental textile products evolve in the course of the invention of TraX® ALU-BOX. The “WATERPROOF LINE” is launched. Its products are 100 % waterproof due to hight frequency welding.

Which everyone know leaked like sives and that is why they made EVO which they still have problems with.

I have the OEM three bag set. Last weekend I dropped the bike while off-road while with my daughter. No one was hurt as we weren't going all that fast. I ended up with one leg under the bike while she was thrown clean. I have the Altrider crashbars which worked wonderfully. The OEM bag suffered a few scrapes on the corner without any other problems. Between the crashbars and the OEM bag it held the bike up so that my leg had no part of the bike on it at all. I was very impressed.

Also, have had the OEM bags stuffed with ice/drinks and articles which I was afraid my break the spring lock but it has held like a champ. So far I like the OEM bags, but things could change.
