19 degrees with the wind chill today.... To work and back. No heated grips or gear but no matter if you have the correct gear. :)

Only the commute to work today, sunshine and 67º. Did have a nice ~400 mile RTE on Saturday though, had to scrub in my new sneakers.

I tried riding to work it was raining..yes it rains in SoCal but I couldn't get the water off my AGV dual sport helmet cover shield to the point I couldn't see squat lifted the shield and rode home blindly with my tail between my legs. I tried dropping the windscreen but nothing helped, is it a helmet issue or what anyone else have that problem. PS if it counts I did drive my wife's car to work with my riding boots.

Beautiful day with a morning temp of 21 F. Wife called and my Mitas E-07 Dakars are in. Have a noon Saturday appointment to get them installed. Supposed to hit 40 on Saturday! Horray!

Tire change will be in Ames Iowa at Fenders Honda. Any S10 riders near Ames come on over and meet up. We can ride after for the breakin.

Well - you guys are making me feel bad O:) ... so just one more, it's my last pleasure ride of the year before I visit family in colder climates and share your frustration..
Today I explored the Mt. Diablo state park east of the Bay Area (around walnut creek).. I'd like to find a more round-about way to get there, but the immediate area is lovely and I saw a couple flocks of wild turkeys.. Though you have to be a little careful you don't startle a bicycle in the turns - the roads are great (if a little narrow) and the views are spectacular almost the whole way up.. After the summit observation, I took a hike behind Juniper camp to watch the falcons.. It was nice to finally have my side cases for my camera gear etc. so yeah - a few more random pictures ;)

Hope you all have happy holidays and the spring dig-out comes early! For those of you who have just mounted snow-plows on your skid-plates -LOL ,my hats off to you!!! It reminds me of this guy I saw give a talk who was missing legs, but did round-the-world adventures with his prosthetic (I think Dave Barr ?)- he mentioned having an ice-axe he would use to break them loose of the pegs to set down when he stopped.. LOL some people are in fact tougher than I am - and I think he is one!

Many of us have experienced that a road traveled in both directions gives the rider a different ride than just riding the road in one direction. While flying home on an eleven hour flight, I started thinking about what roads I've been on in only one direction. Before long, I realized that I can't recall ever having traveled on Lyons Valley Road from the north, IE: 79 to Japatul Valley Rd. Now, I'm not saying that I've never gone that direction, just that I can't recall doing so. Rather than thinking too hard about it, I decided to take a ride that involved joining Lyons Valley from the northeast...

I left my house around 8:30 AM, and headed to Gopher Canyon, which I rode to Circle R to W Lilac to Lilac. As I rode along with temperatures in the mid-50's, and incredibly light traffic, I realized that not only had I not encountered any moving roadblocks (cars), I haven't even seen a red light since pulling out of my garage!

Enjoying the free flowing road, I continued onto Valley Center Rd to Highway 76. On 76, I encountered the first car that had been in my way the entire day. Fortunately, almost immediately, the driver pulled over to let me by. While riding along 76, about three miles before the entrance to the east grade of Palomar Mountain, I encountered very dense fog; the kind of fog which limits the forward visibility to just a bit more than the car in front of you. Just before the 76/79 intersection, I emerged from the fog, and made the right turn to head towards Santa Ysabel.

With the sun now shining, I made my way to Dudley's and picked up some bread and a snack before continuing my ride.

Leaving Dudley's, I continued up the hill towards Julian on 78. I rode 78 to 79, which is another road that I rarely ride from north to south. Typically I never get beyond Engineers Rd. along Hwy 79. Today though, I rode 79 south through Cuyamaca and Descanso, and already notice different scenery, street signs, etc. as compared to coming from the opposite direction. Strangely enough, the ride also seems to move along much quicker.

After passing under Hwy 8, I join Japatul Valley Road, and speaking of the ride going quicker, in what feels like just two or three minutes (was it?) I quickly reached the junction of Japatul Valley Rd & Lyons Valley Rd. I made the left onto Lyons Valley, and rode along, and again in what felt like just a few minutes, I was passing Honey Springs, and the Lyons Valley Trading Post. I continued along Lyons Valley Rd and quickly reached Jamul Dr.

Along Lyons Valley Rd, when traveling this direction, I noticed a different set of street signs, mountains, scenery, overlooks, curves, etc. It was really interesting to ride coming from the "other" direction. It truly did feel like I had discovered a while new set of roads.

From Jamul Dr I headed to Willow Glen to Dehesa to Harbison Canyon to Arnold and onto I-8 west. A few short miles later, I took the Lake Jennings Park exit, and stopped for gas at 7-11. After refueling, I followed the road as it turns into Mapleview, and then made the right turn onto Ashwood, and joined Wildcat Canyon.

Wildcat Canyon was full of cars, but fortunately, I had just the right opportunity to get to the head of the pack, and after a few seconds, I never had another car obstructing my way until I reached the stop light at San Vicente. Upon reaching the traffic light, I made a left, and followed the road to Warnock, and then joined Dye Rd to Highland Valley Rd and then joined I-15 to home.

Four hours fifteen minutes later, with 188 additional miles on my odometer, I pulled into my garage.

This was a great ride, and I think it was made even better because it felt new. I urge you to stop and think about some roads that you've only traveled in one direction, or rarely travel in the "other" direction. Once you think of roads, piece them together in a route, and go ride. If your experience is anything like mine, it will be refreshing and feel like a whole new set of roads!

To work on a beautiful day.

E-07 snow tires handled slushy side streets just fine.

I rode with carrot in Gonzales Texas. had a great time, the pictures does not really show the true nature of the conditions. it has rained for three days and the stuff they call road base is a joke. that last photo where you see me on that long straight was the nastiest road I have ever rode down, how I did not crash is a mystery... had a guy in a truck stop and ask if we were ok , wanted to know how we made it down that stretch of mud with out crashing... he could barely stay on road. where ever we went and stopped people would and ask if we were ok, great people in Gonzales Texas... we rode about 60 to 70 miles of sloppy roads , county commissioners of Gonzales county, caliche is not road base it is dangerous waste of money.. carrot made it look easy, i'm a bit of a rookie(dirt riding), and along with a disdain for pain am a bit of a slow rider. I saw him taking photos thinking please no video, every one will see how slow I am. he asked me if I paddle footed any, only when he wasn't looking.. and then there is the skunk... we go around a corner , I am in the lead, I might be going 15mph and there is a skunk in front of me on the edge of the road. this is another bad slick no traction section of mud and I am thinking CRAP! the skunk is crossing , I am passing and getting closer to skunk(not a good plan)thinking I cant stop I will crash, I cant gas on it I will crash, do skunks allow for speed in their aiming, will he just use the shot gun approach, damn is he going to shoot carrot. and carrot tells me later he was afraid I might use my big loud horns( please hatter don't blow those horns)was his thoughts. its amazing how much can go through your mind in a second or so. he the skunk had mercy on us and held fire. later a big heron of some type tried to be my hat, but thankfully missed. we run heidenau k60s , great all around tire, not so much in that slop, would pack up and become slicks, if it rained a lot here I would pick a different tire... a great day all in all , met nice people, had good food(you can see in photos I like food)and a great friend and riding buddy in carrot. and all of this is because of the super ten and this forum....

hey deriki, i survived but just barely. carrot thought it would have been great for us to have had communications so he could talk to me and here what i had to say... he would have heard a lot of screams, and no no no, a few #$*&^@@*, and please God don't let me fall.... those k60s are not mud tires.. lots of dirt (when its dry) in gonzales, we will do it again soon, if its wet you and carrot can...i'll wait on the highway.
