As has been noted on this forum many times before, no, you do not have to go to your dealer to have service performed. You can do it all yourself and keep a log. I can assure you though, if anything goes wrong with your bike that in any way ties in with service you performed (ie. oil related engine failure, cam chain, cam, valve failure, spoke failure, etc) you will have an uphill battle trying to prove you were qualified to do that work enough so to get it covered under warranty.
Well, the correct answer is: It depends. The asking member was from Atlanta, so yes, Scott is correct about the service being something you can do yourself w/o concern for warranty. UK owners have a different situation.

Now, in regards to US owners and self service, here are a couple of tips to avoid any issue with warranty repairs. Keep all of your receipts. Use the log in the owner's manual and fill it out for every oil change, spark plug change, air filter change, etc. Write every single bit of service you do down, the mileage and date it was done and "owner service". Include the brand and weight of oil you use, the brand of filter, etc. If you keep the bike long enough, take a ruler and make more lines and keep filling it out. Even if you have to move to a new blank page in the owner's manual. (there are several). I do this, and have a tire log too, again in the owner's manual.

When my 98k mile FJR went in for major issues, (still covered by the YES at the time), the warranty claim person at Yamaha requested receipts for my owner service. I could have provided them. Instead, my dealer scanned both my log for service, which included owner service and dealer service for valve checks and warranty work, and my tire log. The repairs were immediately approved with no further mention of my receipts.

Every event is unique. But detailed service records in your owner's manual will never hurt you. FWIW, I did note the brand of car filters I was using, and the Rotella oil, STP, etc. and they never said a word about any of that. I think it was the tire log, with comments about each tire and how it performed, that pushed them over the edge. Apparently they believed that I really did my service because I kept detailed logs.

Oil/filter change ( it's on 3000 miles) oil seemed pretty black

Filter must have been put on by a cretin.... Had to use a chain wrench filter tool to get it off..and not before the chain had nearly destroyed it ::010::

Installed the Rox 2" on my 2015 ES model. Even after performing all the hose lengthening steps from the Altrider video I still was not fully satisfied with the tension remaining on the hoses. After moving both the brake and clutch levers inward a bit I think I am to a point where I'm comfortable with everything.

Before moving the levers I was ready to take it all back apart and order hoses. Now i think I'm going to accept where they are. I'm pretty picky about the tension on those hoses.

Attempted to install the Altrider side stand foot. The gap between the top and bottom plate was too large for the supplied screws to reach and fasten them together. After sending photos to Altrider they are ordering me new longer screws and will be sending. They are very willing to address any issue. They have not been real responsive on replying to my emails, even after I was instructed on the phone to send them an email. They say they are short staffed due to vacations, I'll take them at their word for it.

Wow! I need to do some testing in that area, Beautiful!
You're welcome anytime. ;-)

I'm not sure exactly where the Spaggy incident happened - probably west of Sundre - but there are so many possibilities in the Alberta Rockies.

Spaggy & I are fortunate enough to live in a beautiful part of the world.

I hit 30,000 miles on mine after 18 months of ownership. It is the best motorcycle I've owned. I have been tempted by the new 14's and 15's, (mine is a 2012,) but I like it too much to trade. Maybe after another 30,000 miles. :)

West of Nordegg, Ab. Just east of the park boundary. You're right about how fortunate we are to live near such beauty.

On the Altrider side stand foot. On my 2014 S10 ES I had a similar issue. I found my playing with the order I put the screws in and on the final screw used some vice grips to slightly bend the plate ... I could get it assembled. note: after a 100 miles I had to retighten them and the screw ends extended far enough out to be ground off the tips about 1 mm.

Just had her 6K service. A few weeks early, but the front brake pads were shot. Also got the extended hose kit and Stebel Magnum horn fitted. Bike feels really together now. Shifting is a lot slicker and brake & clutch feel better. best of all, engine is getting really smooth and revs up nicely now. ;D

Andy,

You have got to be doing something unusual to have worn front pads at 6,000 miles. Mine made it 31,000 and I've read others have gone further. With the UBS, rear pad life is diminished relatively quickly. I replaced them at 14,000.

This is actually from yesterday, but Japa is a day ahead of you guys anyhow

If any of you are using the older Baja Squadron driving lights with the white dimmer box, beware that the dimmer is working at or near max capacity. As you can see in the photo the power MOSFET is fried. You might also notice there is a deformity in the plastic case caused by the heat radiated off of the MOSFET. Couldn't figure out where the melted plastic smell was coming from about a week ago. Now I know!

Baja has the new Skene dimmer/controller, which is much higher capacity according to the specs. I've already ordered it directly from Skene.

I have the Skene dimmer with my Cyclops lights. It's a keeper for sure. It's one of those things that works so well, you forget it's there.

+2 on the Skene. I'm using it on my handle bar lights.

Decided to move my satnav mount from the handlebars up above the clocks. Used a BMW mount on it.....only issue was that the bar is a different diameter to the bmw ones.... I had to pack it out a bit ... but seems solid....going to fit brackets to stop any vibrations any day soon as well 8)
