I would suggest that you did not get lucky. You simply followed the instructions and measured in the correct amount of oil. It works every time with only the slight variation in amount based on whether or not you changed the filter too. ::024::

And yes, dry sumps aren't very friendly for oil level viewing.

I also did the 600 mile oil & final drive fluid changes today.

I've read the mixed success stories about getting the oil level in the sight glass, even after supposedly putting in the proper amount of oil. I got lucky at my first try, possibly. We'll see if the level varies as I ride it....

Tonight I packed my bike in preparation for the third annual Exercise THUNDERING RAM. This is a two day run for soldiers in 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group - and they are riding on duty. The idea is to create a community of safety-minded riders - it seems to work, as last year, for the first time in recent memory, we did not lose a single troop to a motorcycle accident. The ride is the culminating point of Motorcycle Safety Week, which features free skills training for the soldiers. We have about 150 riders in Alberta that will ride from Edmonton to Jasper, and then break off into smaller groups for self-directed rides in the mountains. We also have about 20 soldiers in Shilo Manitoba who will make a run to Kenora Ontario. It should be a great ride, and any day that you get paid to ride is a good day!
Was this one of your riders?

An Edmonton-based soldier was killed Monday night during a training exercise near Medicine Lake, about 180 kilometres southwest of the city.

Sgt. Ginette Gauthier was participating in a unit-led activity that included a motorcycle ride from Edmonton to Jasper and back, set to return Tuesday.

The group had arrived at Snaring River Campground in Jasper National Park and many riders decided to explore the local scenery before calling it a night.

Gauthier crashed her motorcycle at about 8 p.m., Capt. Christine Salt said. No one else was involved in the collision and RCMP are currently investigating.

Gauthier joined the Canadian Forces in 1982 and had been deployed to both Afghanistan and the Sinai Peninsula. She also served in the military’s response to the southern Alberta floods last year.

Brig.-Gen. David Anderson described Gauthier as a “dedicated, hard-working soldier who loved to ride and whose vibrant presence will be missed.”
Very sad. Be careful out there.

Yes it was - and a personal friend of my wife. I rode with her in the morning - she was a very experienced rider. It sucks. I am the guy quoted in the article....

Very sorry to hear about your friend. Never fun.
X2

I'm literally just about to leave on a 21 day ride with my wife from Alberta to San Diego on the 101 and back via Lake Tahoe. I like to think I ride defensively but I suspect I will be more focused that usual on this trip.

I met Greg at the Calgary bike show - nice guy! Great invite, kmac - sounds inviting. We're meeting my wife's cousin in Brawley, so I'm not sure what we'll be doing, but I'll sure have a beer with you if I get the chance! What's a good route to Brawley from San Diego? Apart from the obvious slab.

Cheers.

No slab necessary.

I'd go 86 to 78, through Banner Grade (fun section) to Julian. You can take Sunrise Highway south, and then several back roads to San Diego. If you have the time, you could also take 86 to Borrego Springs, then either Yaqui Pass Rd to 78 to Julian, or Montezuma Valley Rd to 79, and explore some more fun roads ... Palomar Mountain, Old Julian Highway, Highland Valley Rd, etc. Many, many possibilities.

Keep us posted, and maybe one or more of us can meet you somewhere and show you some fun roads.

just dropped it off at my local dealers for a service and a set of fresh Pilot Road 4 tyres - in advance of my euroean tour next month!

i've got an MT-07 demonstrator to come home on - (think its the FZ-07 in the US?) the 700cc parallel twin street bike - its feels very light but rather toy-like to ride! - fun though, but i don't think i'd buy on.

Just took the bike in for the headlight harness recall.

Took a gamble: Corpus Christi Cycle Plaza said they could do it while I waited. They did!! Great service from them. They even adjusted my rear brake-light switch.
