Vibration question

I am doing some investigation regarding a shudder/vibration that my bike gets consistently around 2800 - 3300rpm that I now believe is coming from the clutch. The reason I say this is due to a couple of things. I owned a vstrom 1K in the past and ended up replacing the clutch basket with a modified unit that was re-designed to deal with the well know chudder/vibration issue on those bikes. It worked great and eliminated that issue and smoothed out the bike across the entire rev range. Fast forward several years to my new S10 and it demonstrates an all to familiar symptom as the big Vee. A certain RPM range in any gear and the engine gets a gremlin and produces an un-characteristic vibration. If I put just enough pressure on the clutch but not enough as to make it slip it is as smooth as butter through this rpm range. I do not believe it is fuel related as I have changed the fuel curve in this region significantly (both rich and lean) with no effects and the vibration appears to be certainly mechanical.

I would love to know from others if their bike produces and or demonstrates this same symptom. I have been in contact with the guy who designed the basket fix for the Suzuki bikes to discuss if this could be a possibility for the Yamaha. The basket design appears to be very similar between the Tenere and the Vstrom and based on a preliminary review and discussion he believes they are sources from the same supplier. I plan on purchasing a new basket from Yamaha and do a swap out on my bike and will then have the existing one opened up to determine the design, possible cause and perhaps a repair/rework. I love the bike but if this issue could be removed I would be extremely pleased so it is worth it to me to pursue this a bit. I have read some posts about vibration issues in some bikes and perhaps this could be a part of the issue. Any feedback based on your experience/bike is appreciated.

- Your engine will get better as it breaks in. I like to think 5,000 miles.
- Is the vibration more while you are in 1 - 2 - 3 gears?
- Have you completed the 30 second (well 3 minutes) Clutch Switch Bypass. It works!

I was a worry'r and the Tenere has proved me wrong. The more and longer you ride the Tenere the more you will like it.

The bike has been synced, open header, open exhaust, PCV, and flashed ECU. Runs fantastic with lots of power just has a mechanical engine vibration in this rpm band which is not affected by the fueling.

I have what you have. Not bothersome yet but I can feel it. First thing I thought of too, because I am all to familar with the DL1000 issues. Time will tell, I guess. My bike is bone stock though, with only 4500 miles.

Re: Vibration question

Mine still does it even with the clutch switch mod. I absolutely love this motorcycle, but my two very small complaints is the harsh suspension and this vibration, which on mine is more like a shudder as it excellerates. I think it's a fuelling problem because mine goes away when the temperature drops below 50. I was told the only way to really get rid of it is with the flash, or aftermarket headers.

Re: Vibration question

If it's the same thing... I noticed it fairly early on - feels like a transition in the cam timing to me - hits about 3k under moderate or greater load.

If you think it has something with the clutch have you considered the Barnett pressure plate.. I have the 'strong' springs in mine and I love it...

I think I have it. I think I also have every quirk that has been mentioned except the ones that a remedied by the clutch switch.
The motor sounds like a box of rocks to me sometimes. And it has all kinds of "transitions" from 1500rpm - redline.
(especially compared to something like the FJR. Which has a sewing machine smooth range)

I ignore it all. ???

24,000 faultless miles.

Mine does the same thing. A little shudder at about 3300. It's a little annoying because it's in a goo d speed range.

The best days of boat ownership, is the day you buy it and the day you sell it. The best days of Ohlin ownership is everyday in between.

For those who have shared that their bikes have a similar shudder/vib to it try this test - Pull the clutch lever in a hair as you pass through the problem range. Don't pull it enough to allow it to slip. Just to remove all free movement in the lever to where it might be about to slip. If the vibration reduces significantly it's probably coming from the clutch.

A couple have mentioned that they are familiar with the shudder and like me have owned the big vee in the past which had a issue with the basket damper wearing in and creating this shudder/vib in the lower RPM. I believe on my new bike it is coming from the clutch also as it is not weather dependent and I have tried moding the fueling in the problem RPM band by a significant amount (+/- 30%) to see if fueling corrects it. The only thing that makes it smooth is to put a bit of pressure on the clutch as you run through this RPM range. It also feels very mechanical.

I will try pulling the clutch slightly as well. I have a "slight" vibration that starts at 3,100 RPM especially if the bike passes through that range in 4th, 5th or 6th under slow acceleration. It can be with steady throttle. The vibration does not go away as the RPM's increase. The one thing is that the vibration does not occur until the bike is fully warmed up? That variable makes me want to think it is a change in fueling even though it "feels" like a mechanical vibration. But I had the ECU re-flash so doubt that is a problem.

Vibration question

For me it varied, but I did anything but baby it. The only things I did not do was to peg the gas wot, hit redline, and extended highway miles at one rpm. But otherwise I went all the way to just under redline, up to over 100mph, downshifted using engine braking, would roll on power all the way to wot. My engine really did not smooth out until around the 6k mark.
