I got 1/4 inch square foot of aluminum , that I will be working on. I see you have AltRider skid plate. Is that the reason you made right bracket in to two peace or you just didn't have enough material to make it whole?

Mike, The right side is in 2 pieces because of the HB water pump guard. I believe I sent you the patterns awhile ago, do you need them resent? You're gonna have fun working with 1/4 inch plate! If I were you I'd swap for 1/8 or 3/16 at the most.

I want to do 1/4 inch plate. I trying to find somebody that does CNC cutting.
I decided on 1/4 inch because if I drop my bike, tube mounting plastics will brake and not bracket. If bracket brakes, then tube can damage engine case. At least, that is what I'm hoping for. I've been wrong before. :D
I still have your patterns and will be using them as general guide.

Can you throw up some close ups? I am following another thread that has that same case mounted on the right side behind a Pannier. Trying to decide which way to go.

Thanks

I'm bumping this thread looking to see if anyone has done a Pelican or similar case in place of the Passenger seat. I'm considering making one that fastens just like the passenger seat itself, for solo trips. I've already got side and top cases, but I was thinking it would be a nice place to put tools I don't carry on day rides.

I'm going to go take some measurements, but I was thinking something like an 1170 long ways.

If anyone has done this, please post up. If I do it, I'll post some pictures.

I just made a tool tube out of 4 inch piece of ABS from Home Depot. I mounted it on the right side between the Happy Trails rack and the bikes frame. It was 2 foot long so I had to cut about 4 inches off to not rub against the turn indicator. Tons of room maybe even to long. Easy to cut it shorter if desired.

One of these is working well for me after adding an extra bracket to stop it flapping about, arrow points:

Also stuff under the seat and wedged into the Altrider rack.

I went the same route, but ended pulling it off. Too much bounce on the technical stuff...http://thetenerist.wordpress.com/2012/12/27/yamaha-st-pelican-case-and-aux-tank-install-write-up/
I moved the tools to under the seat, compressor, and tire repair kit are in the tank bag

I know it's been discussed before but I can't find it....I'm looking for a tool storage tube to mount on the bike. So before I build one from PVC, I'm hoping to get some advise from those who have already set one up. I'm interested in where to buy one.

Thanks in advance.
got mine from thetooltube.com they have an ebay store, but more accessories for them on the website.

Tractor Supply has them. They are also on the back of the seat on most Commercial Snapper Zero-Turning Radius.

Depends how big you want.

Happy Trails racks?
Yep, you can bolt just about anything you please to them with those threaded faceplates and a couple of their clever knobbed bolts.
That might win the cheape$t panniers award. :)

Here is my tool/maintenance solution. Rather than go with a tool tube like I did on my KLR and KTM I chose to go with the Jesse rear compartment (6 litres of storage) and a replacement rear rack set up that I fabricated starting with a 1/2 inch piece of aluminum plate, and a Pelican 1170 box (another 6 litres). I will finish it off with the Jesse rear rack when it arrives in a week or so. Here is what it looks like so far.

If people are interested, I will post a photo of the final result after I get the Jesse rear rack fitted.

Cheers, David

Very nice tool storage. What is the front box bolted to? Looks like you could strap a 38+ liter dry bag on top of the tool storage. I like it.

The Jesse Rear Compartment replaces the passenger seat. It sits a bit higher than the seat but doesn't intrude on rider position. I will be adding the Jesse Rear Rack on top of the Pelican box when the rear rack arrives, hopefully soon. When done it will make a flat platform that will take my 70 litre dry bag longitudinally. I should have more storage than I ever need.

You can see what it will look like (without my tool storage set up) here:

Thank you David. That setup looks like a plus for serious travelers. Waiting to see how the Jesse Rear Rack mounts.
