"That might be the most expensive solution of them all. Even buying a 2014 ST that comes with cruise control would be cheap compared to all the repair and hospital bills and inheritance taxes!

Because of the return cable, this method would even work on dirt bikes. But I knew a guy who died because he installed heated grips improperly. He hit an inconveniently located tree, and his dying words were about a stuck throttle.
"
Haha .. yes Curt, good point!! All I have to say is that every guy choose its own risks, but can´t deny you are wisely right.

Now, getting your throttle hard (that is hard to move but not fixed 4 ever) is what u do when tensioning the cable, u can twist it back whenever u want, which is the same task done by the rest of the throttle locks around.

Also I imagine that having problems to twist it back (cant imagine how now but picking your nose ::025::) would be applying same logic as having problems on reaching the front brake lever/button properly to disconnect an electronic CC or detaching any sort of throttle lock , so I cant tell day to night if one solution is riskier than the other but deffinitely WE ARE playing with fire here.

About hitting a tree.. well thats one of worst scenarios that hopefully none of us will reach. All I can say is that any of us can reduce cleverly the risk of failing leaving any sort CC STRICTLY for highway use, any other place u'll be jeopardizing your life.

That's one! Who else doesn't ride on major Motorways dual carriageways?

I completely understand that someone who lives where they call roads "carriageways", might not be fully aware of what an adventure route might look like in my neck of the woods. :)

Example: Early March we are heading to ride in Big Bend. And yes, 90% off-road and no use for cruise control. But, even though we never even leave the state we start in, (Texas) Big Bend is 719 miles from the house. And most of it is 75-85mph posted.

LOL, we in North America do have a slightly different view of what adventure touring requires. I do four hundred mile lunch runs for a good burger. You've made regular runs to the coast for BBQ. It was over two thousand miles round trip to our little rallye last summer for many. Love my Kaoko Throttle Lock.

The best uses of throttle lock are (1) to impress others by riding no-handed for 10 miles of twisty roads; (2) to dig through your tank bag for sunglasses and put them on without having to stop. ^-^

What a fun thread. Yes, the bloke from Ireland has no idea what North America is like. Thousands of miles of major 4 lane, (or more), interstate freeway systems. Some times you really do need to use them to get to the fun bits of two lane.

Now, say it with me, THROTTLE LOCK, not cruise control. Different animals, different purposes. :-\

The "Cat Cock Ring" is nothing new. I'll take a Vista-Cruise over that any time, but it's an option. And if you owned a KLR, please, please, please free up .02 cents for some charity and stop with the BS. You know that single cylinder piece of industrial crap was not a motorcycle. Kawasaki just accidentally put two wheels on it. Magic mystery metal and all. ::)

Gotta love the thread title, I read that last part in the voice of Jeremy Clarkson! I too was thinking about picking up a cruise control recently.

After stumbling across this thread I recalled that my dad used the very same o-ring with great success on his bikes. Each lasted him a good 8 to 10 years before needing replacement.

So by tomorrow night I should also be a proud owner of the cheapest cruise control......in THE world!

My $0.02 is a true CC is of course the best system. That throttle lock breakaway system is ridiculous to me and too odd and complicated for a guy who actually rides his Ten and has already laid it down in the dirt and I KNOW I will again...nature of dirt.

For the guys who are such alarmist about a tension lock system like a Kaoko, Throttlemeister, or the dreaded O-Ring, if that is going to make you crash in a panic situation, I recommend getting out of motorcycle riding. It is NOT for everyone. That, OR, learn how to ride. I ride with 2 fingers on my clutch at all times and it is automatic to pull in the clutch AND roll forward on the throttle as I grab brakes....front brakes. It is automatic and virtually involuntary after so many years.

Anyone who is using a tension lock and thinks that caused their crash was using it in the wrong type of riding scenario, wrong place, and/or had it set up very wrong.

Lastly, anyone who thinks there is no where the Ten should be ridden that you would need a lock has never ridden where I and many others in the states live. Cali has thousands of miles of BIG WIDE slab that is often the ONLY way to get to the fun stuff.

To add, anyone who owned bikes from the mid 70s and back know that most bikes back then did not have auto return throttles and Harley continued much longer with non auto return throttles. Anyone ever own a CT70 or QA50? Even new those did not close automatically, it required you rotate your hand forward to release the throttle.

Then, think about that "panic" situation. How does an auto return on the throttle actually help you? {not saying it is bad or hurts you, just think it through}

The auto return only works if you OPEN your hand and release your grip. If you are holding on death grip style the throttle stays on anyway. I do not know about anyone else, but when I have been in an OH CRAP moment I do NOT open my hand and release the throttle. I usually have 2 fingers on the clutch, AND 2 fingers on the front brake and when I go to squeeze the front brake I squeeze the clutch, and roll my right hand forward as I squeeze the front brake thus returning the throttle to closed while in my GRIP.

We are NOT talking about some cogged locking system here, just a bit of tension that holds the throttle open while you rest your hand, shake out the blood, adjust a mirror, or cruise for a bit of carriageway with your right hand off the bar. A tiny bit of hand pressure forward still releases the throttle.
