Re: What is your age?

I'm 58...been riding since 16, stealing my older brothers Duc 160 to ride the pastures and woods behind the house. Moved through BSAs, Triumphs and settled on H-Ds until I just couldn't afford them anymore, even vintage prices went th the roof... and I got my first Beemer(6 years old at the time)...the first shaftie...loved it, still my fave bike overall. The last few have been Connie's and last year moved up to a NT...nice bike, but I want more.

To Chadx point: Not many 20 somethings can afford a 15K bike (out the door)....plus, the larger bikes (say over 300 pounds) do demand a certain amount of experience, that does come with age. I don't think it's as easy to jump on bikes now as it was 40 years ago: Less empty fields, more cars and generally higher prices all around. I started working at 16...and there were plenty of opportunities to make money, if you wanted to work...not as many now as there were. It would take a lot McD hours to save up for a bike....especially with laws governing max hours before benefits must be given.
My 18 year old son had a tough time finding a job...and most of his friends can't.

Re: What is your age?

44 here. The S10 was a combined Christmas and birthday present to myself (for the next few years ;)), bought last October...

I'm really happy to see the age distribution. I might show it to some people I know who say to me that you'll lose the interest to ride once you hit 50 and have grown up ???

Put that in you pipe and smoke it, I say :)

Re: What is your age?

Great reading through folks' riding history. Always fun to hear and get a little more insight into everyone's motorcycle history. Quite a diverse group, yet we all ended up here. And seems the Super Tenere will get used in a broad spectrum of ways, which is a credit to it's flexibility. Some will hammer it offroad more than on, some will never ride on anything dirtier than a smooth gravel road, and others maybe not even there and will only tour the asphalt in upright comfort...and it's all the right way to use this bike.

Re: What is your age?

I'll be 35 next week  I've been riding on the street since 16. I've gone through many different types of bikes and feel that the Tenere will best fit me (sold off a Sportster, SV650 and a Concours to get the Yamaha). I've also joined the dirt bike crowd to see how I like it. I want to get more confortable on gravel/ dirt and figured a XR400 would be better to practice on than a new Tenere!

I got my daughter into riding last summer (5 years old) and my son (2 years old) is very interested in the bikes. I can't wait until they can join me on riding/ camping adventures.

I've had the same idea of late. I've been cruising Craigslist to see if I can find a 250 or 400 that I can get acquainted on. I've only ever ridden dirt on an ATV, and I've only done dirt roads on a bike a half a dozen times so far. Nothing at all even close to dodgy.

Dirt biking is the best way to learn biking. It teaches you what bikes do when thing get hairy and how to react. I wouldn't feel safe riding my wife around if I hadn't grew up riding dirt.

That's how I started. Rode primarily on the dirt for several years before I got my first enduro. I always advise anyone who wants to get into riding, to start in the dirt and away from the cages. It can be so much fun pushing your bike to the limits without the worry of multiple 2 ton moving obstacles to deal with. I am giving some serious thought to maybe looking for a good used WR450 or a KTM 530. It'll depend on how long this fuel price madness lasts.

Re: What is your age?

I started by riding a street bike in the dirt :))

The first rides on my rebuilt from a basket case Enfield 500 single were in the dirt as I was not old enough for a license and the bike was not registered. That was also the bike tha I learned about ignition retard levers. Since we built it from a box my neighbor and I had no idea if we actually needed it. That is until it backfired on a kickstart and launched my then 90lb body over the bars and out the garage door

Re: What is your age?

65 here. Started on a Cushman Hilander (scooter) in 1963. Brand new 1968 BSA 650 after returning home from Viet Nam (U.S. Army). First raced MX in 1971 or 72, TM250 Suzuki, TM400 later. Bunch of bikes since then, 2 HDs, 07 K1200GT, Tiger 1050. Anyway, looking forward to the high tech Super Tenere.
