Super Tenere might not be the bike for me.

So,
I've had the bike new since April of last year,
I put 10,000 miles on it. Bought Zega pros put some upgrades on her.
I love it, always puts a smile on my face.

I just find myself wanting a thinner bike and I can't justify 2.

Does anyone know of a KLR type bike with fuel injection ?


I might put this one up for sale if I find something like that.
I prefer to buy used if that's any bonus

Husky TR650, questionable dealer support. KTM 690, good but not without some minor issues.

Those I know about,
I'd love to stay with a jap bike, I had a wr-250r and it's just not a highway bike at all

Some people use a Kawasaki Versys for some pretty serious off-roading and claim that they perform well in those conditions.

That apparently isn't a market Japanese manufacturers are interested in. They've left to the Euro makes. Keep in mind, virtually every bike will force some sort of compromise. Prioritize what is most important and see what hits most of them. Good luck in the never ending search.

If I was going to go smaller than the ST, it would be a 650 VStrom. They are easy to find in the 4K range with low miles.

I would agree. My son has a 2009 ABS Wee Strom and has ridden many miles with me and we switch bikes quite often. I bought him a Ricor shock and Ricor Intiminators for the forks, While I naturally prefer the Tenere, I would have to say that if I had to give up the Tenere, I would replace it with a Wee Strom.

If you do not mind importing I would go with the Tenere 660. It sounds like it meets your needs. Or the weestrom.

For me, the ONLY bike that is a smaller version of a Tenere is a BMW.
Seriously. Anything else would cause a shift in how I use the bike.

I would be so stoked if the Wee was a good dirt bike. (I mean JUST AS GOOD as the 600 lb XT) but it isn't. Not even close.

I could easily live with the chain. And LOVE the value equation. But the basic geometry of the Stroms are street bike geometry. Which, quite frankly, is smart on Suzuki's part. It reaches a far larger market.

Now if you are honest and you use your Tenere for a similar mission as the Wee-strom, then that ADV version of the strom is a perfect replacement. Dirty with a little d.

Yep, the GS800 is the only bike I can think of that is a minime for my Tenere. In the US anyways. Aggravating. (Especially since it has a premium price with a budget suspension)

The Versys motor, punched out to maybe 800-850, put in a proper relaxed dual purpose geometry frame, would be on my porch in a heartbeat.

And the sudden interest in Yamaha building a junior Tenere with that awesome new triple..........frankly bothers me too. Not the kind of motor I think makes the best Tenere.

Suzuki has made me happy several times in my life. I think they are currently closer than any oriental manufacturer right now. But no cigar.

And thus, the Big Tenere is the best ADV bike in the world, in my opinion. For the kind of ADV riding I prize.

I'd wait until the moto-show in Orlando in October. I think the recently revealed 900+/- cc twin mentioned might just be a Tenere mini-me. I hear both Yamaha and Suzuki are using this a a debut for new models.

You never know what may show up.

Nothing I've seen leads me to believe the 800XC is nearly as Dirty as the 21" tire implies. (Surprisingly) But I suppose it is every bit as much off-road as the wee. Probably a bit more.

I'm very aware that with lots of modifications, some fellas have put the "dirt" in all kinds of bikes. Including the wee. (Killer Wee thread currently on ADV. complete front end replacement and radical weight savings diet) and the guys in Thailand have built some gorgeous looking Honda 500X's.


But for the sake of this thread, I wasn't resorting to 1-offs or extreme mods.

I know the guy who builds these. He lives in Brownsville, TX, and is an incredible craftsman. He uses almost all Kawasaki parts in the build (the only non-Kawasaki parts, IIRC, are the Suzuki fuel pump and the parts he fabricates). He even builds 'em with electronic cruise control!!! ???

Drop him a line. He does truly awe-inspiring work, and he has built a few now and has it down to a fine art. I think he produced the last one in less than six weeks, and you can't tell his builds from a factory built Kawasaki. They're that good.

Well, the OP wants fuel injection and he wants a jap bike and he wants to buy used. That eliminates the KLR, the BMW, Triumph or any of whatever is on the horizon. He didn't say if he wants to use it as a dirt bike or not. Personally, I don't use my S10 much for that, but some do, but we are trying to help num with some choices here, so it depends on what he wants to do with it. The 500X was mentioned and I have ridden one and liked it better than the 700X, but I doubt that you'll find a used one for a while.

The Versys that was mentioned could be an option, if he wasn't too fixed on dirt riding as much as adventure touring. If anyone doubts what can be done with that Kaw 650 twin engine, check the results of this weekends two Springfield Mile AMA nationals.

Another vote for a Wee. I sold that to my girlfriend and moved up to the Tenere. The only major difference between the two is suspension and the punch of a big motor.

Every time I get back on the Wee, it puts a smile on my face. I'm likely faster in gravel on the Wee than I am on the S10 - sits low and just loves to go! Still a super cool bike and what I would own if I was in budget mode.

The Wee is not much smaller than a Super Tenere. If you want a smaller more dirt-friendly bike with Japanese reliability, get a KLR.
