Hello Guys,

I had 2000KM on my tenere and I decided to try the max speed. On the straight away I was able to do 200km/h and down hill 215km/h. I was kind of dissapointed. Engine rev did not even hit the red line but i couldnt get any more speed out of it. I was wondering if there is a chip in it that limits the max speed? or am I expecting too much from a two cylinder?

I am not aware that the bike has been restricted in any way. That's circa 130mph .... d'ya know what! I don't think I really want to be going that fast on a Tenere. ;)

Was it in S or T mode ? I do believe you will get more out of the S10 as you put more kilo's on the odo. Mine is on 3500 km and I briefly saw 205 km/h without any problems. But remember ........................... this is a dual purpose bike and not a street racer. ;)

I with you on this one Swagger, I'll prob get it up to top speed once just to see it can do it and that would be it, for those sort of speeds I would be riding a different bike.

For me it is not about top speed, but how it handles and performs in the speed ranges that I will be riding when I am upsetting the sportbike squids in my local routes that I currently put to shame on my Strom. ;) 200kmh is fine for me.

Top speed is one of those things that is heavily influenced by a number of factors: elevation, load, head/tail wind, luggage, rider positioning, etc. That being said, the S10 is a 90-95 RWHP, very tall, and non-too-streamlined motorcycle, so 200-210 kmh (125-130 mph) true sounds about right with everything optimal - this is more/less what GSs do also.

Now if the S10 has typical Japanese speedo error (5% or so high), then 200 kmh indicated might actually be 190 or so (120 mph) which is a little on the slow side, but again, real-world conditions can easily account for a loss of 10 mph or so over optimal.

Most I could get out of my 08 GS with Jesse bags was around 118 without just wringing the crap out of it. This was GPS indicated speed, with 121 indicated. Aerodynamics isnt the strong points of these types of machines. A bigger question for me aside from the initial...what will it do...is why would you want to take it up there? If I can ride at 80 mph all day with a full camping kit and have power to pass when needed, I'm good!

i remember years ago, having to hit a certain triple digit (125ish) speed on my Honda ST1100 and write down the indicated rpm there to receive my member number of the original ST Owners Club back in 1996. FUn for a moment!!!
I once took a 1987 Honda CBR1000 Hurricane up to 155mph for a short period. I thought if i had sprouted wings, I would have taken off like an airplane.

I've been riding s10 since early october 10. Have done 5000km. Personally have tried 205kmph on the s10 with a pillion n full HB box set( top40l n side panniers 40l). Roughly i wt 80kg odd with pillion around the same too.. I kinda feel that given the poisture of the bike, at that speed its still stable controllable... I hv done a dyno test on it and report indicates speedometer is 8kmph off..

Cheers

Have tested top speed on a couple of occasions (with touring windscreen, wind deflector kit and side cases). First time I easily reached 205km/h indicated and felt as though it would go further, but ran out of straight section of road. Second time it flattened out at 203km/h on the same section of road. Was a bit surprised, but could have been a headwind the second time around. This is all academic as there is no use for these kinds of speeds anyway... Good enough in my mind.

200kph/124mph is cookin' on this or any type of bike (not that I haven't spent a fair amount of time at or near that speed throughout the years. Wink Wink. Nudge Nudge. Say no more...)

Out of curiosity, what was the rpm at 200kph/124mph in 6th gear? Since 6th is so tall, I'm guessing it may not be able to overcome the wind resistance. On many bikes and cars, top speed is reached using one gear lower than top gear. What is indicated speed when running right at redline in 5th gear?

Rpm is about 6400 at 200kph. Never paid attention to rpm vs kph in 5th yet, so can't answer your second question. Should be possible to work out from published gear ratios. I reference to fact that rpm is apprx 3500 in 6th at 110kph. Peak torque is at 6000rpm.
