This is what the camera recorded when I tried to lock up the back wheel on a dirt road. I felt noting but the clicking of the pedal and the bike stopping.

Let me be the first to say (and obviously the first to take abuse from the other side), ABS SUCKS off-road on anything that is wet or loose. The only good thing ABS is good for offroad is hardpacked material.

Let the bashing begin!

But seriously, why don't you pop down to the local hydraulics place and see if they have some kind of electrically operated bypass valve. See how it goes. has anyone checked that out?

Ir seems to be that in Australia and the states YAMAHA chucked in the ABS for free anyway.

I don't think your the first to say it, so no bashing from me...I am surprised that Yamaha didn't incorporate an off switch for off road use.

Pretty cool video. Thanks for posting. I think the frame rate of the camera and the pulsing of the ABS are interacting, but you can clearly see the momentary lockups and the brakes releasing enough to gain traction and doing it in a pretty smooth way as theses things go.

Let the ABS wars commence.

Hum...interesting. That was 30fpm. Maybe I'll try again some time at 60fpm.

I doubt this is much of an explanation video, but it is what happens if you turn off ABS. No real surprises here.

Agreed. I have not found any situation yet where I thought turning it off would be desirable. Love it and don't anticipate turning it off.

Off road I can do better than the ABS. Growing up on a Dirtbike certainly has it's advantages over a computer. I have been scared by this ABS system on a gravel road similar to that in the video. Enough so that I lost my confidence on the S10 off road. Not being able to turn it off is a big issue for me. Of course what works for me may or may not work for the masses. Having many years of high speed track riding has elevated my braking capacity under certain conditions that totally eliminate the need for ABS in many circumstances. As for casual riding on the street in traffic I can see it's benefits but not many.

I thought there was a way to trick the ABS into the off state ... maybe by putting it on the centerstand and dropping it into gear for a few seconds-?? For the little bit I would be riding off road, if I ever do even, I figured on giving it a try. ::022::

Lost confidence in the brakes or the whole bike off road? The only time I've found ABS a liability is in very deep, very loose stuff (recently worked dirt/gravel) on a steep downhill. Admittedly, it led to a fairly exciting moment but it did slow me enough so I could make the hairpin turn and not die. On ANYTHING other than that, I find these brakes work work very well and I wouldn't want the ABS off. I think you end up learning to steer your way out of trouble rather than panic braking to avoid it. There, got my whack in on the carcass. ::002::

I now try to spend some of my riding time trying to stop in stuff that might confuse the ABS and am trying to learn how it will behave. Can't hurt...at least not so far. The more I ride this thing, the more confident I get.

If you run the bike on the centerstand in gear for more than 15-secs or so it faults/disables the ABS. (Some have said you need to be in 2nd and rev the engine, but 1st and idle will fault mine.) The ABS light blink for the 15-secs and then go steady. When it is steady, the ABS fault will "stick" and the ABS will be off until you cycle the ignition. The TCS and check engine lights also illuminate, but the check engine light will go out when your ride away.

It is odd that on the next start, it appears if the system is still faulted as the ABS light will be steady. But as soon as you ride off the ABS system re-initializes and the light goes out. If you want to fault it again, I don't know if you have to go through an ABS on cycle to get it to turn off again.

I lost confidence in the brakes as a whole. Steep down hil on gravel high rate of entry speed, it would not slow down at all with extreme rear brake pedal pressure. The only way I got it slowed down was by doing the unthinkable off road I grabbed a handful of front brake. That is totally fine for pavement but a front brake and off road is not the method of choice for that type surface. I have extensive background in the use of brakes whether it be on a paved road course or on a single track trail system. I can back a 600 into T4 at barber Motorsports park from a buck 30 and square it off at the apex so I know what I am talking about. ABS is a bandaide nothing more nothing less. It's for a panic induced street moment not for off road use PERIOD it will benefit many on the street but off road in it's current configuration it's not for me on this bike. I would like the option to cut it off. I don't find that as a unreasonable request. And yes I can ride the wheels off a super motard which is all about braking forces at work.
