Re: Don't for the ACF50

So, I guess this means that there's no hope that these spokes are powder coated like the ones that came on my 2000 Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 Classic. You could wipe them clean with a dry cloth. Too bad ...

They look just like regular spokes used on 1970s motorcycles but heavier. I have many motorcycles from the 70s with spokes and they are not rusty. I'm not worried about this, but if it happens I'm 10 miles from Woody's Wheel Works. ;)
I kinda agree... In a few years if I have an issue with the spokes and the wheels aren't trashed Ill throw in some stainless and be done with it... One guy last year just about brought his bike home and replaced with Stainless, looked easy on the ST...

I think somebody should photoshop us a pic of black spokes on a blue tenere! :D just saying....

That might be cool for the future when things start looking crappy on the current spokes

ACF50 users, How did you guys apply it to the spokes? I was reluctant to just spray away and let the overspray possibly get on the brake discs. I ended up spraying a paper towel and wiped each spoke but I don't know if this is enough to make a difference. Any tips?

I covered everything with plastic, taped it on. Then sprayed away. After that, I wiped it down and let it run off. Took about a day to settle out. I did the most of the bike on the lower part.

This stuff is tough to clean up(that's an understatement). :D

After I was done I wiped the rotors and pulled the pads and cleaned them. Just in case. lol

I always cover the disks also. Spray the spokes & wipe off the extra with brake cleaner on the painted parts (rims). I then take a new shop rag, spray with brake cleaner and wipe the disks off to make sure. This stuff works great and will last a good while. Dirt will collect on it but will wash off and still leave a film of it on your spokes. It will last for about 3 or 4 car pressure washes before reapplying. I also spray some on a rag and wipe/coat all exposed nuts and bolts.

I am not sure if I have been doing it the right way either but seems to have worked for me without any problems.

I wish I knew about this stuff in 06 when I turned my new KLR into a 5 year old looking bike with a trip by way of Freeport to Galveston. A one day short ride. By the time I got home the spokes were trash. :'(

There is a thread in the modification section on stainless steel spokes and yes nipples too. Price is about $100 methinks which in the long run would be cheaper than buying the anti corrosion stuff wouldn't it?

Watch the tires, too. You sure don't want to get overspray near the tread.

At the Aging Aircraft conference a few years ago, the Coast Guard showed the results of a study they did that compared about a dozen of these inhibitors for protecting inner structure, such as within the wings and fuselage. Some products were a bit better and some not quite as good in how many days the protection lasted for aircraft near the coast.

The first and biggest of the two bottom lines I remember was that all of the treatments essentially washed away with almost any soap. The second take-away was that all of the products needed retreatment regularly, even if in enclosed areas. Depending on how close to the coast and how enclosed the area was, it could be as little as months and was typically around a year.

Went to purchase a can of ACF50 from an aviation supply house near Hobby Airport. They were out of stock and sent me to their competitor who sold both ACF50 and a similar product called CorrosionX Aviation. Fella said the same guy created both products.

I have no way of confirming it, but they did have a really cool aisle of aviation grade care products.
Left with the can of CorrosionX and a bottle of "Brillianize" plastic cleaner that is ideal for windshields, headlights, face shields, etc.
(I've seen this stuff somewhere before)
Also a box of Dupont Sontara aerospace grade wipes. Extremely lint free disposable paper towels. They dispence like a kleenex but are much larger and really durable. THESE I like!

Got the plastics show room perfect. Good stuff.

Bye Bye bug guts. No scratches or mars detering my vision.
