I'm not against automatic stuff. The greatest toy I've ever owned was a Kawasaki V-Force ATV. Automatic and always in the in the right gear to spin the tires a take off at any time. Thing will likely always be my favorite motorsport vehicle ever. Miss that beast...even if it did put me in the hospital for 4 days.
Ah!! The good old KFX 700. I was really sad to get rid of mine :( I bought it for the ex wife and had special valved and sprung Elka suspension on it, DMC dual exhaust, clutch weights, sheaves, springs, and I reworked the carbs with better jetting. I also added the "Gasser" throttle system so I could use it with the twist throttle and convert it to thumb throttle for anyone else riding it. That thing was a beast. After we divorced I slapped on the spare springs and had a great trail machine.

No dirt toy ever gave me more thrill than the KFX-700. I once screwed up a jump on an MX track and that mistake nearly killed me (ATV Crash), but I still only smile when I think of that amazing machine.

I went back to the track and studied that jump until I figured out how I screwed up. Finally understood and never made that style of jump again.

Back on topic.
I'm scheduled to ride the Triumph Rally Pro on Saturday. Told them I wanted to add some high speed highway to the ride. Need to know if that's a reasonable touring bike. Dealer said he could accomodate that request. Looking forward to it.

May try to throw in another bike or two on Saturday.

Guess I should start a new thread about test rides.

This is really nice for you to test ride all the new bikes. I posted the DirtBikeTest video over in the T700 forum. Cant remember if you said you tested that one out yet?

T7 is not on my list. I have a dirt bike. I'm considering replacing the Tenere with a mildly dirt capable touring bike.

I rode one. Absolutely, positively hated it. If you like spirited riding, it's horrible. If you like having the bike get into 5 gear before you get to 25MPH, then DCT is awesome. After 2 days and nearly 200 miles, I hope to never ever ride one again.
Interesting, I would not have thought that they did that. Does it shift differently in different modes?

I've ridden a couple and yes different modes result in differences. It was great on the Goldwing and the CrossTourer on pavement. However, on a bike where you want to control the power, such as on deep gravel versus mud versus pavement, I never was satisfied. The bike with a thumb shifter did a lot better in being able to be in the gear I wanted without clutch/shift all the time, but I don't remember which bike that was.

Thanks, I believe the AT does have the paddles for manual shifting.

It does, and I could see them coming in handy. Myself, it’d be a choice if I did a lot of stop and go commuting. Other than that, I really don’t have a need for the wizardry.

My pea brain wheels are turning thinking I might very well be interested in the T700 someday. My goal of rides would be my current Super Tenere and Beta dual sport. Then a lightweight 2 stroke dirt and then the T700. Of course that might change. The MT900 triple is looking pretty good!!

I rode a Honda NC700 with DCT. Tried it in every mode I could figure out. I never found anyplace or mode where I appreciated the computer shifting for me. I was so happy to give that bike back to Romney Cycles who had loaned it to me while the Tenere was in for a valve check.

The owner at Romney loves loaning me bikes because they always sell after I ride them. He thought there was no way that would happen when he loaned me that Honda. He told me he was shocked when someone called him about that bike while I had it parked at my house. I'm always happy to bring them business.

That's how I would describe the Tenere. . . .
Me too. I made a decision in the last year I'm done doing any crazy dirt on my big bike. I'm going much more casual on my touring ride. I do know me well enough to know I could never go to a street only bike. Tried that before, it doesn't work for me. I'm going to let the 690 satisfy any above average dirt needs I may have.

That's the primary reason the KTM 1290 Super Adventure S model is more interesting than the R model. The S with 19/17 wheel setup can be at least be as capable in the dirt as the Tenere. I suspect much more, but I'd not be losing any capability. The R model is overkill for they way I intend to ride the next bike. Not saying I've decided on the KTM, but I'll be riding one on Saturday a couple of hours after I ride the Tiger 900 Rally Pro.

My NC700DCT had paddle shifters. I think all DCT models come with them.

The NC had D, S1, and S2 modes. The S "Sport" modes would hold the gears longer just like you would when working a clutch. The D "Drive" mode was focused on fuel economy which is why it shifted so early

Ok, I was slow on the uptake. I went back, and read the posts. I was expecting you to be having issues with the Tenere. You're not unhappy with the Tenere, you're just wanting something new. Makes more sense now. Good luck with the search.

Thanks...no, nothing wrong with the Tenere. Six months from now it may still be in the #1 spot in my line up. Just looking around right now. My wife's new bike worked out so well for her that it seemed wise to consider what else is going on out there. There's been some incredible developments in the Adventure word since Yamaha's last update in 2014. I wish Yam would update the Tenere, but can't wait around forever.

The big trip was cancelled this year, so some cash got freed-up. Yes, some of that cash is going to require a miserable game with United Airlines, but a game I must play. kinda hate the idea, so that's a lot to overcome. I was very, very impressed with the big GS 1250. Didn't free up that much money. That would require a wait until winter so see what deals are offered if I were to truly consider that one.
